Title: "Gaga" for Tarantino
Post by: Deka1184 on April 06, 2010, 12:03:49 am
As someone who is a huge fan of both Lady Gaga and Quentin Tarantino, I was of course very interested when I heard that the video for "Telephone" was going to be shot by a director who is trying to pay hommage to Tarantino's style. Like any Gaga fanatic, I saw this right when it came out almost a month ago.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQ95z6ywcBY

After watching this video several dozen times, I can conclude that its a really good mix of Tarantino's and Gaga's style, yet at the same time it leaves me somehow unsatisfied.

What do you think?

MORAL PANIC

Anyway, as a piece of performance art, I didn't think it was nearly as good as Bad Romance.

What do Gaga and Wolverine have in common?

They're both X-men.

I say again, Lady Gaga and Quentin Tarantino.

What did you honestly expect?

You know, I just can't bring myself to care about Gaga and Tarantino hasn't been the same since Kill Bill. Inglorious Basterds was a disaster of a movie and everyone involved in it should have been kicked in the crotch.

like almost any good director he has his moments of brilliance and some really low points, spielburg and Lucas are the same

Geeze guys, there must be some sort of sale at the HLP Haterade stand.

Its true that the Telephone vid doesn't hold a candle to the Bad Romance vid, but remember the Bad Romance vid was 100% Gaga, and nothing out there can beat 100% Gaga so its understandable.

Although I didn't care much for the Kill Bill series, I really liked Inglorious Bastards. Not his best, but I thought it was quite solid. Death Proof, however, was probably the worst film I've ever seen, not gonna lie.

I do like the song Telephone, and quite frankly I believe every song on Monster is incredible. The Fame was alright and it caught my attention but I didn't really start adoring her style till Monster. She goes so much further beyond every other bland popstar out there. She manages to be constantly fresh and revolutionary while simultaneously leading the mainstream and I have an incredible respect for that.

I coulden't stand video phone. Beyonce never ceases to bore me to death. The only thing that made that song good was in the video where the guys in suits have cameras for heads. That was awesome.

I'm guessing you have no appreciation of classical statues. Those darn things all take their clothes off to get good spots in museums.

Also, you do the red text thing by typing 'backslash me', like /me is showing Liberator how to do this.

 Now one point to be made is that, when I at least listen to music, I don't stare at a picture of the "artist" or "artists". That could get rather gay rather quickly.

And as for Lady Gaga not being that hot? Not everyone likes bleach blondes with more makeup than common sense. And I'm terrified of the idea of having sex with Lady Gaga. It's not a question of which STD I'd get... it's a question of which STD would I NOT get!!

I think her persona has an appeal similar to those of a lot of the glam rock and Europop musicians she consciously borrows from. I don't really listen to her music (or most of her influences either) but the whole aesthetic universe she's assembled carries a colorful kind of allure.

Title: Re: "Gaga" for Tarantino

Her suggestion is that the only reason Gaga's music should frighten you (rather than inspiring, say, a cordial 'not for me') is that you are afraid of sex and female sexuality because you can't possess it or master it.

Thus the tendency to assess her by her sexuality and then demean it as meaningless, since women are judged by how desirable they are (a trait she is happy to satirize at some length.)
Title: Re: "Gaga" for Tarantino

No, it's because of exactly what he said. "You're such a feminist you call everything not female a misogynist." It's just a retarded ****ing thing to say.
Title: Re: "Gaga" for Tarantino
Post by: General Battuta on April 06, 2010, 06:43:48 pm
That too.

There is the question, though, of why a nearly naked woman who does not appear to be bothered by such nearly naked state inspires such terror.

She was a Catholic schoolgirl and apparently very studious. I didn't pay the slightest bit of attention to her until she started causing such an uproar, and was pleased to discover her music was both hilarious and self-aware.

And she's cool enough to either directly or through her creative team put Command and Conquer, Star Wars, and Dune references in her music videos. That's pretty badass.

When were you called a misogynist?

Why are you a misogynist if you enjoy looking at barely clad women? That alone wouldn't qualify you.

Failure to account for context. A woman being barely clad doesn't have to be demeaning and exploitative.

It wouldn't suprise me if she did it for both. Not necessarily for money, but to get noticed. A large part of making it in the art world is just getting noticed. The music videos and the crazy outfits might also serve to propel her into the spotlight. There are other precedents: k.d. Lang, Elton John.

I think her current style is hugely influenced by her current position in the music world. Her artistic practice will probably change overtime, and could very well move away from where she is now.

@iamzack: Insulting people by calling them a retard doesn't further your goal of convincing people you're right. I agree with you on a lot of issues, but not the name calling.

It's never worked then. The problem is that that sort of comment is the clarion call for spammers to simply come in and post more nonsense until the thread dies. I can't remember many cases where the thread has improved after such a post and in those cases I can remember I always thought the call was very premature and the thread could (and did) have saved itself anyway because the next few posters didn't follow suit and instead kept debating the actual topic at hand.
