Corrupted registry

Well, the system registry is corrupt in my Windows 98 machine again. I am guessing that it was caused by one of the spy-ware programs I got rid of. Anyway, I plan on getting an external USB hard drive one of these days to save the ~14GB worth of data I have on it then I intend to slate the drive. I plan on installing Linux this time and was wondering what distribution of Linux I should go with. Suggestions?
