As I don't understand anything about the video post tab in 3dsMax, I tried to make glows using lights: http://www.geocities.com/venom250681/glowpic.html?987424073430
Can people tell me if they like it?

Did you use volumtric lighting for that?
Not sure how the new volumetrics work in 3ds,
but Lightwaves volumetrics allow you to create and apply either texture maps, bumps, proceedurals etc...
if 3ds allow you to do that, you might consider trying to create a slight fire flicker heading out of the engines with the volumetric...(I don't do this, in lightwave, I jsut create the engine glow planes, stick a texture on em, set it to glow, then create an engine effect object, and apply my textures to them making it look like energy flowing from the engines, and work with trancaperencies to make it fade, then stick a light in there to cast lights from the engines...)
Though I can think of at least 4 ways right off the top of my head to do it differently...
But I do like the effect, it bleeds through the gaps in the hull nicely

well, I'm not very good at 3dsmax, for the 6 last years I used 3ds3 lol, I just made my first model on 3dsmax yesterday, so I can't say if I can do that or not... (anyway, making models in 3dsmax is great, I made the third fighter pf my mod in about 2 hours lol, and it looks very nice )
I just used omni lights, tweaked the far attenuation, and used a volume light environment setting on them.

Venom: I like the glow, it looks good.

But if you want Freespace engine glow. Make the .ani engine glow animtion to an .avi using Aniview. And then using the .avi as texture on the engine mesh. Finally add some glow to the mesh.

Hehe... 3ds3 is all I have. Hopefully, it will be enough to do the basics for a contest entry...I'm not going to have much else to do this week. Spring Break away from ANY computer that can run FS2's stuff.

But, I'll have lots of time for modelling...I hope.

[EDIT] Oh yeah, I think the glow looks pretty good.
