I used to be a diehard fan of Freespace and when i got my new PC a year ago i thought i would relish the visuals for hours without blinking.
Sadly i havn't played Freespace for more than an hour since buying my new PC because of an issue with the ANI's and my ATI 4870 video card. Last time i queried this, about 8months ago, there was no solution. But surely there are ATI users who manage to run freespace just fine.

Heres the issue: whenever an ANI comes up in speech the FPS drops to about 3 until it's over which is really irritating and renders it unplayable.

Does anyone have any clues? A total reinstall didn't work.

I have an HD 4870 and everything seems to work fine. Could we get a debug log?

 
Wow, sorry for the incredibly long time to reply, long story short, trucks hurt  :p

Debug says there is no issue.
Not sure if it helps but the internal fps logger doesn't register the massive spike when ANI's are played...

Did you overclocked your card ?
If so, backup setting to default and try how it works.

Nope, no overclocking.
Perhaps should mention this is the 2nd 4870 (previous one got fried) and it still has the exact same issue, drivers are updated too.

(For the record, you get a debug log by running the debug build (the one with a d on it) then go to your freespace 2 folder, then into data, and get fs2_open.log put it between code tags or upload it somewhere of your convenience and post it here, thanks :)

You said your previous graphics card got fried? Do you still have the same motherboard and do you have an integrated audio card?

Because depending on how the first HD4870 got fried, it may have damaged the motherboard and possibly affected something else. I'd also make sure that such basic stuff as motherboard BIOS and all other drivers are up to date. Just to eliminate potential problem spots.

 
Previous card got fried when I let a mate borrow it whilst I was out of town for a while (card into his PC) and the fan stopped working.

Yes, integrated audio and yes every driver is up to date as of last month  :)
