Is it going to be second UEF destroyer or something like that?
-
This is the scale that The E will release the model at when he's finished working on it.
-
Are there plans to incorporate this design into future BP chapters?
-
Well here's a general rule of thumb:
If it's awesome, then most probably :P
-
That makes me have higher hopes for the Vexor.
-
First off all: Awesome work The E.
Second: This should be probably be discussed in the BP subforum, but:
How would one explain things like the Vexor and this beauty created by The E appearing in BP?
-
Awesome work, man! Say, would you mind sending me the files of it when you're done? :D

New cutting edge designs just entering service?
-
While they desperately need every available ressources to keep their shrinking fleet running?
One of these could be the project, but I doubt that ;)
-
I'll say it again, in case Darius wasn't clear enough, this ship is at this time not scheduled for a BP appearance. It is "merely" a test object on which I am learning to UV a model (thanks to an awesome tutorial made by pecenipicek). Once I'm done, and once I found someone willing to actually texture it, I will release it publically.
-
I accept that statement, though use of the phrase "at this time not scheduled for" by its nature allows room for a potential choice to include it in the future. ;7. Also, several ships used in BP have themselves been publicly released many years before BP existed, so just because it gets released separately, doesn't mean that it can't be chosen for inclusion later. I therefore feel it within my right to speculate on its potential role in the UEF, should it be decided to add it to their fleet.
On a detail standpoint, the forward hull appears somewhat under-detailed when compared to the rest of the ship. Do you plan on augmenting that section, or is it to remain smooth for protective armor purposes?
-
I'm still thinking about that. I like the general sleekness of it, and I won't break that up with greeblage. However, the nose area (where the radome used to be) certainly could benefit from more detailing.
-
If you decide to incorporate it into BP, you could always rewrite the backstory a bit, so that each destroyer is a unique piece of work.
So the Solaris could be a Solaris, the Toutatis a Vexor and the Eris something else.
Of course it would mean re-balancing the one mission were the big T appears, though since it totally overwhelms the Hood (after the AWACS is gone anyway) that shouldn't be much of a problem.
Also I can't seem to find the thread this was split from... can anyone give me a link please, so I know exactly what I am talking about here?
-
It's this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=76869), and specifically this ship:

"Supar Seekrit Fedayeen Ship" always works.
-
Who said they would appear in BP ?

I actually really like this idea.
-

Nobody did. Darius implied that it was a possibility, and the rest of us are discussing how the BP team might be able to do it, should they choose to do so.
-
UEFI/UEF SOC flagship?
-
BP or No-BP, I'd love to see this completed! Thanks for making my model beautiful, The E! :D
-
Yeah, its sexy.
Will it get more turrets?
-
Yes, I'll add a few point defense guns.
EDIT:
Here's a few more renders:

Ooh. Tiny PD is tiny.
-
Uh, now I realized how big thos big turrets are^^
Will the side mounted Gauss cannons be actually able to turn/rotate?
-
Well, in the Phobos they could only rotate along their vertical axis (which is relative to their mount point). The E might want to make them stationary, or have them as complete turrets.
-
This would really be an improvement, since they could engage an enemy while not pointing towards them.
-
I don't think they'll be able to rotate a full 360 degrees on their bases. About 30 to 45 degrees of elevation and maybe 210 degrees of rotation should be good.
-
If those container-like structures a bit behind the middle are rotating (they certainly look like they are supposed to rotate to me), then a full 360° wouldn't make much sense anyway.
With those nice big guns, I'd wish Freespace could handle the barrels compressing with each shot to compensate for the recoil.
-
I'm looking forward to this beast, so please finish it The E...and no, I don't want to encourage you to work faster^^
-

Seems like that'd just be a turret animation, and unless that's magnitudes more difficult than I imagine it being, wouldn't be impossible.
-
Problem is that that's a translational movement. FSO's animation code only does rotational movement, and while you can hack it so that it looks like translational movement by placing the model centerpoint way off in the distance, that has the unfortunate sideeffect of messing with the model's bounding box.
-
Okay, finally got the main guns mapped. To celebrate, here's the preliminary tech description for it:
"The UEFg Phobos was designed in response to the Frigate 25 requirements issued by the UEF Navy in 2380. The requirements called for a replacement of the Karuna design, using the latest and greatest in naval shipbuilding advances. Taking clues from the Narayana class, the Phobos uses a dual grav drive in order to power its massive ion drive. Its main weaponry are the dual Sunflare Grasers, the first anticapital energy weapon system deployed on a UEF vessel. Secondary armament consists of 16 Pilum missile launchers, equipped to fire the new Kestrel multi-purpose missile, as well as 8 dual mass driver turrets, based on the venerable Varunastra design. Point defense is still under development, but at least 15 Khatvanga turrets will be used.
In a radical departure from the Karuna and Narayana designs, the Phobos class has no integral fighter bay, as it is designed to be paired with the proposed Deimos class Carrier."
-
I like it :)
So, the "nose" will not get any other forward mounted weapons?
-
I'm not so sure about the names. Phobos and Deimos are both already used by the GTVA. While in-universe it would still make sense, if the names were chosen before contact was re-established, it would be a bit confusing for us players.
-
I like it :)
So, the "nose" will not get any other forward mounted weapons?
Those two honking railguns (or rather, Sunflare Gamma Ray Lasers) on the sides not enough forward weapons for you? XD
-
E, please tell me what the **** is going on here? http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/5720/phobosmid.jpg
misplaced vertices somewhere on it or what? AO is not supposed to **** up that bad usually.
-
I am not entirely certain. I will check it out.
-
I think the blame on that may lie safely on me. DX
-
Nope, it was my bad. I made a few noobie mistakes while unwrapping that part, which given that it was the first piece I did isn't surprising.
-

Well...
I can't quite explain it, the nose looks rather...naked, considering almost every other UEF capship has..."nose guns", no offense towards The E intended.
-
Heavily armoured nose...could be good as a torpedo ram (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torpedo_ram).
UEFg Thunder Child. :P
-
I think I'm going to add a few greebles there, just to make that area a bit more interesting, but other than that I think it will stay clean. There are a few guns mounted there, 4 PD turrets to be exact, but the big weapons are further aft on this ship.
