This is a really a stupid question but...
I'm stuck on the Hide and Seek mission because I can't figure out how to scan anything.  I've flown all around the target (for example, the weapon system of the ship) I'm trying to scan, got as close as possible and just sat there etc.  I can't find any reference to scanning in the controls config either.  A little help please?

I'm on Linux if that makes a difference.

I take it that FS scanning mechanisms aren't familiar.

You must have the ship, and if necessary, the specific subsystem targeted. Then, you close within a needed distance (usually something like 150m) of the target with a clear view. That is, if the subsystem is on the top of the ship, you can't scan it while being on the underside. When the scanning automagically starts, you'll see some lines moving on the HUD target display and hear a distinct scanning sound. Once that has concluded properly, the target has been scanned.

Ok, thanks.  That will certainly make that mission a bit of a challenge since you cant get within 1000m without being challenged.  That was my mistake, I was staying outside the range that triggered the proximity alarm.
