Title: FS2 on a macbook pro ?
Post by: WALLY on December 11, 2017, 04:26:32 pm
Hi All.
My windows computer died, and ive replaced it with a macbook pro, back in 20 15, then life got in the way, so I have not thought about  FS2 for years, then the other day I noticed something about  FS2 for Mac, so I contacted GOG with my original purchase order numbers , and they said :
" They do not make a MAC version, so they could not help, Sorry "

I have tried some of the old links, from the web, about using  wine, yet following the instructions, I get halfway through installing, then , instead of lines of update running,   I get the message " Winetricks Commands Finished " and the only  box that works, is the one  that says  " Close "

Then half the instructions  seem to contradict themselves, because to get  whatever  installer  to work, you have to have   FS 2 downloaded allready.

Obviously that will not work, on a Mac, so, is there a more updated way, to get Fs 2, on this Macbook pro from mid 20 15 now  on  OS High Sierra ??

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Wally

You can either use the FSO Installer (http://www.fsoinstaller.com/) or Knossos (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=94068.0) to install FSO on macOS. Both of them can extract the retail files from setup_freespace2_2.0.0.8.exe so you won't need wine. If you don't have that file, you can download it through GOG's website after logging in.

Thanks.

I tried the link to the  FSO Installer, that you posted, and the next page says, you must allready have FS 2 installed ? Which I cannot, as  GOG do not  have a mac version.
Or, does it mean  I have to download the windows version onto the mac, then  download  the FSO installer ?

Ive never tried that knossos, but  from what Ive read, it sounds a bit like wine, to get it to work, you have to download several other things too ?

You don't need to have FS2 installed for the FSO Installer. I'm not sure why the page says that but I've tried the installer and it allows you to select the installer file from GOG.

You don't have to download anything else to get Knossos to work, just download the Knossos.dmg (https://github.com/ngld/knossos/releases) file and extract it the same way you would with other DMGs. Knossos can download mods for you, install and launch them. It has nothing to do with wine.

Wally, you can also hop on the HLP Discord server (https://discord.gg/YNVP3WR), as well as posting here.  Might get more immediate response (but be sure to update here with any solutions you implemented, in case others have the same issue).

Thanks.   Ok, due to other stuff, I had to go to my boat, and going through the old stuff,   Ive  found my original   " Freespace 2 "  CD   which I purchased years ago.
Ok the   MacBook Pro, does      not     have a CD drive.

I can buy an external  CD / DVD  locally for  about  $ 20 , with a plug in   USB.

So,  if I bought the external  CD / DVD   drive, obviously the mac will not recognise a  windows  CD, but,  once ive downloaded the   FSO programme, that  you posted the link to,  will the  original  CD  FS 2 , load ?   Or is that, outdated ?

Yes there is a  Mac external  CD / DVD drive, at about  3 X the price, but presumably the Mac drive, will not recognise a windows  CD ?

Or, should I forget the original CD, and  just work on  your  download   instructions   ?

Thanks in advance

Thanks,  I am not very good at this computer stuff, so, for now, i ll stay here, with help from  ngld , rather  than receive a lot of different ways  to try, by well meaning  experts.
I have noticed, over time, that a lot of  advice, given with the best of intentions,  end up , like the  old  Whale Soup recipie ..........

So, I ended up trying to install FSO on my new MAC using Goober's installer and the Gog version (not sure where my cd's are), and innoextract is failing to extract the package into the directory. Gog only provides an exe for FS2 as well, so it looks like it's really difficult to currently install FS2 on a MacBook.  (Barring possible problems with my specific setup)

I also can't figure out how to get Knossos to try to install FS2.  Is there a way to reset it to give me the start screen again?

Wally, ngld is on the HLP Discord server, as well as most of the other people that are regularly on here.

Also, please clarify: you do own FS2 Windows edition on GOG, right?  If so, you can still manually download the Windows FS2 GOG edtion to a Mac (just the file, I know it won't load ona Mac, but I'm getting there), and then the FSOpen Installer should be able to extract the needed files from that.

So basically, download the GOG edition FS2 installer file, and use FSOpen Installer.  FSOpen Installer will ask for FS2 Retail source, point it at that GOG file you downloaded (actually, if you own GOG FS2 and you're already logged in to your account on GOG's website, you can directly download it here (https://www.gog.com/downloads/freespace_2/en1installer0).

@WALLY: The FSO Installer can't use the FS2 CDs as far as I'm aware. If you don't already own FS2 on GOG, I'd recommend buying it rather than an external CD drive since it's cheaper than $20. Also, if you try to use the original CDs you probably will have to install the patches which will make this much more complicated than using the GOG installer.

@Cyborg17: You can delete the ~/.knossos directory to reset Knossos to it's initial state. If you just want to install the retail files, you can also go to the settings screen (click on the cog in the upper right corner) and click the blue "Install Retail" button.
Knossos also uses innoextract so if it fails, I'd appreciate it if you could send me any error messages you encounter.

Hi Again.
Some work got in the way, however, I read all  your replies, thanks !

Ok so far Im back into my old GOG account, and I downloaded the GOG galaxy . However, when I click on FS2  in my library,  the page opens,
but... The   " Download " box, is greyed out, and not working. I have tried everything, in my limited knowledge of these things and I cannot find an alternative route to use, to  download FS 2.

What next ?  Thanks in advance.
Oh  HECK ? Dunno what I did ??    but now ,  Setup_freespace2_ 2.0.0.8.exe  is downloading !!!  Got about 32 mins to wait ! before I can check if its  opening & working ::   hereĀ“s hoping !

OK, Ive got the exe file, in the downloads box, but,  on double clicking the download,  it comes up with  " Safari Cannot Open The File "

What Now     OK  I also downloaded that  " FreeSpaceOpeninstaller.jar "  but im not getting them to work together.

I can see I purchased  FS2  Nov 09 2011, but, with all the  new stuff, do I have to buy  the  game , again ?

First of all, sorry for the late reply.

To start the FSO Installer you need to have Java installed. I'm not quite sure how that works on macOS, sorry... =/
Once you start the installer, it will then ask you about the retail files. You'll have three options and the first one should be for the GOG installer. Select that option and point it to the setup_freespace2_2.0.0.8.exe file.

@Cyborg17: Knossos probably thinks you already have the retail files and you'll have to delete the FS2 folder from the data directory you selected on your first run. After that, restart Knossos and the button should show up. There's also a bug in Knossos 0.7.1 which causes mod installation to fail that was recently discovered. It'll be resolved by 0.7.4 which should be released today if all goes well.

How to install Java on Mac OS X High Sierra:  http://osxdaily.com/2017/06/29/how-install-java-macos-high-sierra/

Then you can open the FreeSpace Open Installer, which will ask for the GOG FS2 setup file at some point.

Hi Again.
The saga continues..

So far, I have verified that my Java is up to date.

 I have downloaded  the  FreeSpaceOpeninstaller.Jar v 2.3.0.   also,  Setup_freespace2_2.0.0.8.exe .

Also the Galaxy client_1.2.3 1.8 pkg.

Then I got prompted to download "  openAl "  but, once i found the page, there are 2  different  downloads,  1 says OpenAl  1.1 windows   and the other says   OpenAl 1.1core SDK.
I downloaded both, and I tried to open them, and a box comes up saying  the file cannot be opened.

I can see, that I have all the files, and on using the jar launcher, it goes through all the lines and green balls, then says :

"  Installation Complete, All mods installed succesfully "

Then  I just had to click on " Finish "

However, there is no Icon  or way to start the game.

A friend, found the  freespace folder, somewhere on the hard drive , as it was not showing in the usual   Finder or Launchpad  . So I moved the folder to  the  Applications page, and  clicking on it, opens it up and shows all the files .

Do I need to click on one of the files in the freespace folder , to start it, or am I missing something else ?

There seem to be several files ending in   exe, but having  got so far, I do not want to mess it all up, by randomly clicking on files I know  nothing about.

Thanks
Wally

Can you post a screenshot of your folder? If you don't have wxLauncher in there, you'll probably have to download it from here (https://github.com/scp-fs2open/wxLauncher/releases).

Wally, OpenAL should be pre-installed on your Mac already, so you don't have to worry about that.  As ngld said, you'll need wxLauncher, so either find that and drag it to Applications, or download it from the link above.

Please move the fs2_open_... applications back into your FS2 folder (where the root_fs2.vp file is). Then you need to select that folder as "Game root folder" in wxLauncher. The FS2 Open executable field should now allow you to select the 3.8.0 version. Once that works, go to the Mods tab and enable the MediaVPs mod. You should now be able to click on "Play" (in the lower right corner).

yes, now  the " Play " box is no longer  greyed out, but still nothing happens.

I am beginning to feel  like this : :banghead:

You're certainly getting closer! Can you please open a Terminal and enter the following:
Code: [Select]
/Applications/FreeSpace2/fs2_open_3_8_0_x64.app/Contents/MacOS/fs2_open_3_8_0_x64

That should launch FSO but since that doesn't seem to work, it will most likely generate an error message. Can you please post that here?

I am not sure, what you mean, but , going back to the wxlauncher ,  that game root  thing, does not let me type or paste anything , in the box,  its  stuck on:        /applications/freespace 2          So , how do I get your ..

OK, I am not getting an error code, but a long sentence, that I can only read half of , ??

With "open a Terminal" I meant, open your Applications folder in Finder, then go to the Utilities (might be named a bit differently though, I'm not sure) subfolder and open the "Terminal" application there.
Once it opens up you should have a simple white window. You should be able to enter (or paste) the line there and press enter. Afterwards it should output a message which you can then copy & paste here.

Thanks for all your patience & help
Thanks for your patience as well. I'm working on making this whole process simpler so hopefully this will be much easier in the future.

Ah, got there, yes, I pasted the line, under the other stuff in the box,   all there was, was my name and  mac book and  last opened.
I couldnt  delete that, so I pasted  your  code , after the  cursor line.
then, when I pressed  enter, the same line  came up again, ending in ::   Permission Denied .  no error code  , just  : Permission Denied

Thanks again, gnight   Wally

There was an issue with the FSO Installer where macOS builds of FSO 3.7.4 had not been packaged properly and the game wouldn't start. I'm not sure if that was fixed with FSO 3.8.0. As such, could you try getting a copy of FSO 3.8.0 from the release thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=93812.0)? Download and open the .tar.gz file (.tar.gz is a type of compressed file like .zip files) and copy the two .app bundles inside it to your FreeSpace 2 folder.

A log from wxLauncher might also be helpful. Copy/paste this text into your macOS Terminal and press Enter:

Code: [Select]
open ~/Library/Application\ Support/wxlauncher/wxLauncher.log

This will open up the log in a macOS utility called Console. Copy/paste the contents of the log into a new post. If possible, please paste the log text into "code" tags: in the rows of buttons that appear above the text box where you write your reply post, click on the button marked with a '#', which will insert "code" tags into your post. Paste the contents of the log in between the two code tags.

Code: [Select]
The result should look like this.

If after getting the FSO builds from the 3.8 release thread you still get "Permission denied"  when trying to run the command that ngld gave you, try copy/pasting these commands into the Terminal, pressing Enter after you paste each command. Then copy/paste the output from the two commands into a post here.

Code: [Select]
ls -l /Applications/FreeSpace2/fs2_open_3_8_0_x64.app/Contents/MacOS/fs2_open_3_8_0_x64

Code: [Select]
file /Applications/FreeSpace2/fs2_open_3_8_0_x64.app/Contents/MacOS/fs2_open_3_8_0_x64

Here's what I get when I type these commands on my MacBook Pro runnning macOS Sierra:

Code: [Select]
Joshs-MacBook-Pro:~ josh$ ls -l /Applications/FreeSpace2/fs2_open_3_8_0_x64.app/Contents/MacOS/fs2_open_3_8_0_x64
-rwxr-xr-x@ 1 josh  admin  8322088 Aug 22 10:32 /Applications/FreeSpace2/fs2_open_3_8_0_x64.app/Contents/MacOS/fs2_open_3_8_0_x64
Joshs-MacBook-Pro:~ josh$ file /Applications/FreeSpace2/fs2_open_3_8_0_x64.app/Contents/MacOS/fs2_open_3_8_0_x64
/Applications/FreeSpace2/fs2_open_3_8_0_x64.app/Contents/MacOS/fs2_open_3_8_0_x64: Mach-O 64-bit executable x86_64

Hope this helps.

As far as I can see, all relevant folders, are inside the  fs2 folder.  As said, there is a freespace  Icon, in the lower bar, but when I press on it, the screen goes black, then a load of fast messages flash by, too fast to read, then the black square ,shoots down into the lower bar, beside the  fs2 start logo  and I can only get rid of them, ( I ended up with 3 black boxes , in the lower bar ) by using    " Force Quit "  of  Fs2.

How can I do another download of  FS2 ? If that , is the problem ?  Because going into  gog, so far , has told me when I bought the game, and it is  owned, but there is no  re install  option ??

Thanks

Sorry to have another voice jump in here.
I think for Mac, you want to just download the installer file through GOG.com, but not actually re-install the game.  My GOG Galaxy does not show an option to download a file again for a game it thinks is installed, but if I go through GOG.com and go to my account/games, I can download the file again.

He already has the setup_freespace2_...exe file. He won't have to download it again unless he deleted it. I'm guessing the .vp files aren't in the correct place which is why I asked for the screenshot.
If they are just in the wrong folder, moving them to the correct place will resolve the issue. If they're missing completely, he'll have to run the FSO Installer again or manually use innoextract to get the .vp files.

That looks correct so far. I'm assuming this folder is /Applications/Freespace2 which you have selected in wxLauncher as the game root folder.
Can you please go to the "Basic Settings" tab and select the second executable? I think it's called either Debug or FASTDEBUG. Afterwards, press Play and attach your debug log. You should be able to find it at ~/Library/Application Support/HardLightProductions/FreeSpaceOpen/data/fs2_open.log.

Those logs belong to the FSO Installer and I don't think we need them right now. The error message you got isn't too surprising considering that FSO didn't work before.
If you can't find the file I mentioned before using Finder, you can open the Terminal again (Applications > System Utilites > Terminal) and type the following:
Code: [Select]
open ~/Library/Application Support/HardLightProductions/FreeSpaceOpen/data/fs2_open.log

Sorry, I forgot the quotes.
Code: [Select]
open "~/Library/Application Support/HardLightProductions/FreeSpaceOpen"

If it still complains that the path doesn't exist, the debug version of FSO probably failed to start. In that case, can you please try starting FSO through wxLauncher again? Then try the open command above.

I have been able to reproduce a lot of what you have had trouble with, and I'm sorry it hasn't worked better for you so far.  It looks like it boils down to a couple of things - the installer is distributing an older wxLauncher version that isn't compatible with newer FSO versions (and possibly latest macOS versions), and also, the installer seems to have messed up the apps significantly during the extraction process.  The good news is, all I think it will take to get this fixed is downloading the newest wxLauncher version 0.12.0-rc3 for Macs (https://github.com/scp-fs2open/wxLauncher/releases) and downloading the MacOSX 3.8.0 FSO build (https://github.com/scp-fs2open/fs2open.github.com/releases?after=nightly_20170828_09b28f2) from that page.  Overwrite your existing wxLauncher app with the updated one in the DMG, and the FS2 apps with the ones extracted from the .tar.gz archive.  Re-run wxLauncher (may need to right-click and hit Open to get around the security restrictions on downloaded files the first time you do this), and you should be in business.  If it doesn't, it will hopefully narrow down the number of things that could still be wrong substantially.

Can you copy and and paste the portion of that error text above what is shown?  It should be the most useful part of the error for us.

Well, that seemed to take forever, and 20 pages !
Thanks for all your help, so far.
As said,  Im ok  doing  emails, and  playing  games, but  I know nothing, about  this  stuff, that   Ive just posted .
Hopefully , it will allow you to see what has gone wrong.
I have tried to  follow your instructions, to the best of my ability.
I certainly have not messed with anything that I know  nothing  about .
Cheers.

I don't think that allows going over the character limit, as I believe that is related to the database field size.  Although we probably only needed the first post, I didn't realize it was that long.  Looks like it crashed on graphics init, wonder if we have another mac-specific graphics bug or something else went haywire.

You can always use Pastebin (https://pastebin.com/) for long text logs, probably the easiest way.  Then just post a link over here.

Yes, thats what I thought, with my limited knowledge, but, I did  exactly that, and it only sjhowed the last bit of the post.

So then I was asked if I could post the bit above,    and that turned into 20 pages  .

Thanks for all the  help though !

I have given up, on the mac pro idea, but not, the game its self.
So, If I buy a new Windows  Laptop , to be able to download the game, from GOG, are their any incompatabilities I should know about ?
Since all the different failiures, I can just see..... buying a new  Windows laptop , then on trying to download the game ...
I get a message  stating ............. This Game is not compatible with this windows  OS .......

Any Ideas , will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Wally

The GoG version by itself may or may not run on modern computers, but you can get the GoG version and install Knossos (https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=94068.0) to get a copy of the SCP build installed that can run on modern hardware, as well has having access to many of the community mods.
