As for what options to select, what do you folks think? I mean, would it be more entertaining to see a higher chance of actually *beating* the game, or would it be more entertaining to see just how ****ed we all get because of my (possibly) gross incompetence?

Cinematic mode turns the game into a Hollywood action movie, but you *will*still lose folks.  If you want to play more gritty and "realistic"go with aiming angles and red fog.  Red fog is really fun.

My go-to Second Wave combo is actually Aiming Angles and Absolutely Critical, personally.  Red Fog makes the game far too likely to downward spiral.

Red fog affects aliens and is removed by medkits.  It essentially turns an AP grenade into a permanent flashbang and a last carbine into a precision suppression weapon.  Absolutely critical works against you day more often in long war because drones will ****ing murder you with their stupid defense, dr, and ability to flank whenever they feel like.

EXALT is stupid hard because they have the same capabilities as your troops, will actually have more health when your first encounter them, and will gleefully use grenades and rockets to destroy your cover and one-hit your guys.  They also come roughly 20 at a time, when long war unlocks every map for every battle type.  It's fully possible to trigger for pods of EXALT in one move and then watch them grenade every living thing on the map before you can bore through their stupid amount of health.

 
Count me in as well. I've got no idea whether the game allows it, but I'd prefer incendiary weapons, or failing that, explosives.

XCOM is really ****ing hard to mod and involves deliberately going into .ini files to alter every single thing you want to edit.

Also please note that you don't get 12 guys all the time.  You start with 6, can upgrade that to 8 for most normal missions, get an extra 2 for assaulting enemy base(s), and up to 12 for the final mission.

Either way, I'll be playing around with it today since I've quite enough to get things going. I'll take a look and see how the mod treats the officer training bit, suppose giving everyone the class they want isn't all that bad of an idea

I don't need luck, I have ten guys running onto the battlefield at the very beginning!

Mod: Long War
Modifications: You just need to deploy to rank up to Specialist (Squaddie) as opposed to having to get two kills as per vanilla Long War (you naturally still have to survive). I've also made standard deployments ten soldiers until I upgrade to twelve. Take that Scotty, you can't ruin my fun!
Second Wave: New Economy, Hidden Potential, Training Roulette, Red Fog, Cinematic Mode and Aiming Angles.



"Alright people, you all heard the news! We've got enemy x-rays touching down all over the world right now. Grab you gear and double time it to the Skyranger! We're deploying to South Africa within the hour"




"Skyranger has successfully arrived at target area, deploying squad"

The footage from the field was surreal. Aliens. When I was given this Command position I wasn't prepared for the idea of fullscale alien incursion. Nothing can truly prepare you for when it actually happens, but I will do the best I can. We've got the brightest minds of our generation in this facility and the toughest sons of *****es to go out there and take the fight to them. I don't know what to expect from our enemy, but I do know one thing for certain

It's going to be a Long War.

For anyone who cares to watch these. I can do voice overs and generally not take it seriously if that'll make them more interesting. Otherwise, I'll keep it just clean footage
