Re: A celebration of Freespace
So I've been playing around with Unreal 4. Imported some assets, started to get some gameplay logic going, and so on and so forth.

But by god is this ever pretty:

Not for some time. I have a very specific project in mind for this, and old FS ships are at the moment neither needed nor wanted for it. Also, I want to work out the best way to rig these models first. The Erebus is my test case due to its complexity; I want to make sure the workflow is scalable enough for it.

I should also point out that there is no "game" there at this time. Just the models, some lighting, and some rudimentary turret tracking behaviour. There are no effects, no thrusters, no actual gameplay there.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
What do you mean "what"? There was nothing in there, so sorry for the more silliness than usual it grammatically sense didn't even make it.

Seriously though, what the hell are you cooking? I thought you were just playing and messing around on UE4 for its own joyful sense. Does this really have a solid purpose behind it? You know, I'm pretty good at guessing. Like, I know what's on the scene regarding cinematic rendering and what's cool nowadays to do is to use these engines to render movies instead of Max or Maya because it doesn't require like weeks to render a scene.

I thought he must have bought the license for a better reason than playing around. I want to know too.

Did he buy the license alone and is working alone, or is this some sort of collaboration between numerous people?

My plan is to take the bones of the The Blade Itself mission from WiH, and make the game I always wanted to play, which is basically Battlestations: Midway IN SPAAAAACE. I actually do want to make an actual game with this.

I was more like thinking about the unreal engine thing... their FAQ is silent on "free stuff" as far as i've read it which was, I admit, probably too little.

...What IP issues would he run into for using the Unreal Engine when he's a subscriber and the whole point of subscribing is to, you know, use the engine?

As far as "free stuff" in the FAQ:

Quote
  • Are any revenue sources royalty-free?
No royalties are due on the following:

    • Ancillary products, including t-shirts, CDs, plushies, action figures and books. The exception is items with embedded data or information, such as QR codes, that affect the operation of the product.
    • Consulting and work-for-hire services using the engine. This applies to architects using the engine to create visualizations as well as consultants receiving a development fee.
    • Linear media, including movies, animated films and cartoons distributed as video.
    • Cabinet-based arcade games and amusement park rides.
    • Truly free games and apps (with no associated revenue).
Take a note of the last item in particular.

schrödinbug (noun) - a bug that manifests itself in running software after a programmer notices that the code should never have worked in the first place.

<MageKing17> "There's probably a reason the code is the way it is" is a very dangerous line of thought. :P
<MageKing17> Because the "reason" often turns out to be "nobody noticed it was wrong".
(the very next day)
<MageKing17> this ****ing code did it to me again

<MageKing17> Everything points to "this should work fine", and yet it's clearly not working.
<MjnMixael> 2 hours later... "God damn, how did this ever work at all?!"
(...)
<MageKing17> so
<MageKing17> more than two hours
<MageKing17> but once again we have reached the inevitable conclusion
<MageKing17> How did this code ever work in the first place!?

<@The_E> Welcome to OpenGL, where standards compliance is optional, and error reporting inconsistent

<MageKing17> It was all working perfectly until I actually tried it on an actual mission.

<IronWorks> I am useful for FSO stuff again. This is a red-letter day!
