Re: A celebration of Freespace
I've noticed a fairly small hit for HDR without shadows vs. shadow_quality 1 with no HDR. But god damn it's so pretty I don't mind.

Gorgeous!  Is there a build for us mere mortals who know nothing about compiling to try this?
Maybe someday God will give you a little pink toaster of your own.

Here's the build The E posted on IRC: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7wqthznf02ns3qp/fs2_open_3_7_1_shadows_SSE2.7z?dl=0

Remember that it's experimental and there are no guarantees that it'll work properly.

Awesome; thanks!  Can't wait to see this in action in a bit.  I am continually amazed at the level of activity and improvements still being made to this game.

Graphics improvements are sexy and look great in screenshots. I've already expressed my enthusiasm to Swifty!

Performance improvements, however, are way way way better and more important. So it's cool we get some of those too.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
I'm pleased by all the positive feedback on the HDR blooms. When I committed that last change the other day that finally got the blur shader working correctly, I didn't know that it would get out in the wild so quickly like that. So thanks for the positive words, guys. Stuff like this makes it worth coding new stuff for Freespace Open.

Please keep in mind that the build is experimental meaning it's still kind of buggy and certain features are half assed like the bloom controls and the F3 Lab looking like crap if you don't have post processing turned on. There's also the issue of how I'm doing lighting in the build. I'm using a physically-based lighting model (Blinn-Phong) and doing Fresnel-Shlick to calculate the Fresnel factor. As a result, the lighting looks a lot more realistic than the ad-hoc OpenGL-based model we currently use but I've yet to get it working properly in the deferred lighting shader. So just a heads up if you guys think lighting looks weird.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Another thing I also noticed is that nebula missions are now one big gigantic blur now. So yeah don't play nebula missions with builds generated from pabst_bleu_ribbon until I figure out how to fix that.

I've been playing with that build some.

I'm enjoying it.

That's a beauty E. This build is incredible. I'm having a hard time dogfighting with all the eye-candy on the screen.
If I agreed with you, we would both be wrong

Aside of beams, it looks that HDR isn't applied on other weapons either?

At the moment, I think it's only being applied to ship glowmaps and glowpoints.

<MageKing17> "There's probably a reason the code is the way it is" is a very dangerous line of thought. :P
<MageKing17> Because the "reason" often turns out to be "nobody noticed it was wrong".
(the very next day)
<MageKing17> this ****ing code did it to me again
<MageKing17> "That doesn't really make sense to me, but I'll assume it was being done for a reason."

<MageKing17> THE REASON IS PEOPLE ARE STUPID
<MageKing17> ESPECIALLY ME

<MageKing17> God damn, I do not understand how this is breaking.
<MageKing17> Everything points to "this should work fine", and yet it's clearly not working.
<MjnMixael> 2 hours later... "God damn, how did this ever work at all?!"
(...)
<MageKing17> so
<MageKing17> more than two hours
<MageKing17> but once again we have reached the inevitable conclusion
<MageKing17> How did this code ever work in the first place!?

<@The_E> Welcome to OpenGL, where standards compliance is optional, and error reporting inconsistent

<MageKing17> It was all working perfectly until I actually tried it on an actual mission.

<IronWorks> I am useful for FSO stuff again. This is a red-letter day!

<MageKing17> TIL the entire homing code is held up by shoestrings and duct tape, basically.

Wooowww that's a cool shading :D
Hm, but one thing dragged my attention during watching. Atreus's main beam. When I looked close I saw that the beginning of the beam starts +/- 30m from the emitter's surface. Small and irrelevant thing actually but I'm curious is that set on purpose or it's just my retard observation or a mistake ;)

Beauty.
"We have now reached the point where every goon with a grievance, every bitter bigot, merely has to place the prefix, 'I know this is not politically correct, but...' in front of the usual string of insults in order to be not just safe from criticism, but actually a card, a lad, even a hero. Conversely, to talk about poverty and inequality, to draw attention to the reality that discrimination and injustice are still facts of life, is to commit the sin of political correctness. Anti-PC has become the latest cover for creeps. It is a godsend for every curmudgeon and crank, from fascists to the merely smug."
