Two roommates want to play Multi at the same time

So I live with one of my good friends, an old Freespace player from the days of yore. We're trying to both play Diaspora with a server that has a number of people on it ATM. Unfortunately, since we're on the same network, we can't play at the same time. Does anyone have a reliable fix for this?

Turey:
Under Basic Settings in the launcher, put "7809" into the "Force Local Port" box on one of your machines. It should work.

Roger. I will test this sometime tomorrow with him, as I don't have time tonight. Thank you for the input, though!

=/ No joy on this solution. Anyone else know?

E: also, we can't even seem to get a LAN game going for just ourselves. =/ help me i am stupid

karajorma:
Okay, if you can't get a LAN game going then you're definitely doing something wrong. To play a LAN game, all you need to do is turn off PXO from the button on the multiplayer config screen and enter each other's IP addresses (if you aren't on the same network, if you both have routers, you'll need IP addresses). If you're not seeing each other after that, check your hardware and software firewalls. I remember Zone Alarm used to cause me no end of grief blocking out the other PC when I was testing BtRL years ago.
