Hi, I'm wondering if a full retail install of FS2 is required for FSport.
At first I thought it was a total conversion like Red Line or Babylon using FSopen, but then I tried to run it and got some errors because it required FS2 resources (web cursor error).
Before just buying FS2 on GOG I thought I'd be clever and try to use the files from the FS2 demo, and this got me into the game main menu but when I try to choose the campaign (to pick FreeSpace 1) I get this error:

Otherwise most of the functions from the main menu work. 
I get a similar error for the tech room.  If I go into debug mode I can see ships and their info. 
Is there a way of using the FS2 demo data to play FSport, or is there just not enough data there/things in the wrong places compared to retail?

Firstly, it should be standalone. If you have that web cursor error, check http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,56279.msg1180353.html#msg1180353. If that doesn't work, find Lobo. He made that post and knows how to solve almost every known problem related to FS2_Open.

Secondly, do note that files from the FS2 demo are not compatible with anything in FS2_Open because the vp files in the demo do not contain all the data needed by FS2, FS2_Open and its dependencies.

Finally, you may want to attach fs2_open.log to your post. It is located in the data subfolder of your FreeSpace 2 root directory (ie. C:\Games\FS2\data\).

FSPort is a "mod" in the sense that it indeed requires the original FS2 in order to work. Not a total conversion and definitely not standalone.

I'm not entirely sure of what the demo contains, but I'm certain that it lacks things that are required by the FSPort. I'd just advise you to buy FS2 from GOG and be done with it. It will give you a clear conscience as well as the possibility to play numerous user-made campaigns and mods, not just FSPort.

FSPort 3.0.x is standalone.

FSPort 3.1.x isn't.

Standalone: Stands alone. Works as itself. Example: The Babylon Project.
1) Download TBP.
2) Install TBP.
3) Play TBP.

Not standalone: Does not stand alone. A "mod". Needs something bigger in order to work. Example: FSPort.
1) Get FreeSpace 2.
2) Install FreeSpace 2.
(Do the FSO install hassle if you want.)
3) Download FSPort.
4) Install FSPort into your FreeSpace 2 according to the detailed and understandable instructions.
5) Use FreeSpace 2 to play FSPort.

FSPort (regardless of version number) is not standalone.

Correct, but it needs FS2. And that is why it isn't standalone.
