i was rummaging through my vast boxes of computer ****, cds, ect, trying to organize and cull anything i don't need anymore, and i found the cd case with my original fs2 cds (fs1 and 2 less silent threat). that got me thinking, was curious how many of you actually still own the retail freespace.
-
Mines probably scratched beyond usability at this point
-
You spelled Snuffleupagus wrong.
-
it wasn't me :nervous: bad admins! :D
-
Bahahaha.
I got all three... though i have two copies of Freespace 2... The Sci-Fi edition, disk 1 was scratched, so i went back and bought another one. Cost an arm and a leg, but i got 'em.
As for FS1 and Silent Threat, got 'em for my birthday years ago :D
-
I have both FS1 and FS2, although my FS1 discs are scratched all to hell. I used to have my Silent Threat disc, but... I let a buddy of mine borrow it, and...well...we all know that road.
Of course, who needs the ST disc when ST:R is coming out soon?
-
my discs are pretty clean, probably cause i put them into one of those big cd cases. and because i use virtualized cd drives and nocd cracks.
-
I have Freespace 2, Thank you Ebay. By the way, what made the sci-fi sim of the year version worth over $100?
-
rarity
-
I mean what was better about it?
-
I have FreeSpace 2 Sci-fi Sim of the Year Edition, and Darkness Rising. I have to thank fsport though for the full FS1 and Silent Threat.
-
You spelled Snuffleupagus wrong.
Fixed.
-
I have all CD's, and the installer. Dam the snuggles are back!
-
I have all my Freespace 1 and 2 cds. All of them are in prime condition.
I'm legendary among my friends for keeping my CDs in insanely good condition. Frankly I have no idea how I do it, but always keeping them in a jewel case at all times may have something to do with it.
-
FreeSpace 2 CDs *discs only*
FreeSpace 2: Collossus *disc only*
Descent: FreeSpace The Great War + Silent Threat *box 'n discs*
Descent: FreeSpace Darkness rising (PIII Optimized) *disc only*
I never really went out with intention to collect them all, they just ended up in my lap by chance. :p
I mean what was better about it?
Nothing really, it just had some extra user-created missions and maybe some other very unimportant things. I think the price was so high because it was used as an attempt by Interplay to get some quick cash as they went down the drain.
-
I have all three, and two copies of the FS2 CDs.
-
FS1 & FS2, (UK editions obviously ) And ST...... All bought at time of release.
And i fart in the general direction of anyone who doesn't consider buying the game after they downloaded it and fell in love with it......You know who you are.
-
I've got the CDs with boxes for FS1 and FS2. Never bought ST, mostly because of its reputation.
-
what should i put if i have the freespace 2:collosus thing?
-
I have retail FreeSpace 2 and FS2: Colossus.
-
what should i put if i have the freespace 2:collosus thing?
1. It's Colossus. Colossus. I'll slap you around with a trout if you do that typo again.
2. I assume that "Snuffleupagus" is the "other" option in this poll.
Nukedude, you missed a few. Colossus, Darkness Rising...
Edit: And since there's the Installer option, you could also add an "I downloaded from HotU" option. Or not.
-
i was thinking about setting the oem versions as well as the uk versions (conflict freespace?) but i decided not to because i was lazy and hadn't slept in 2 days.
-
Fair enough.
-
sorry, but that's how half the people in my school spell it. Like how americans say theater, and brits say theatre.
-
Had FS2 since it was released back in '99. Got FS1 + ST cd bundle last year....didn't think I'd be able to find a mint copy but did.
Edit: Got FS2: Colossus as well.
-
sorry, but that's how half the people in my school spell it. Like how americans say theater, and brits say theatre.
... while we can also keep in mind that theater and theatre are both real and acceptable words, whereas collosus is a typo. I might be overreacting but that's what I do when I see one of these frequent typos.
-
How can you forget the pack? There is the word "Colossus" there!
-
I have had in my lifetime 2 copies of CONFLICT Freespace: The Great War (My family PC came with the DVD, when I couldn't find it after a house move, I bought the CD version with Silent Threat off Amazon Marketplace for £15).
Bought FS2 on ebay for about £20
-
I though you had the GTD Galatea, too :P
-
I have The Great War and FS2.
I though you had the GTD Galatea, too :P
A lot of power on that CPU. :D
-
sorry, but that's how half the people in my school spell it. Like how americans say theater, and brits say theatre.
i always thought theater was like the movies, and theatre was like plays and ****.
-
American words are usually better than their British counterparts. America is much better than Great Britain.
For the record, I'm superpartes
-
I though you had the GTD Galatea, too :P
Now where would be the fun if I played with my office and on my PC? I am fully aware of my fate in 327 years time, but at least with the game, I can live forever for I am Alpha 1, (until 2335 anyway)
-

Your comments never cease to amuse me.

Turey's installer for me. I don't have a FS CD to m name. i just found out about it...over winter break XD
-
-always thought Freespace 2: Colossus was about being stationed on the Colossus for the campaign-
-
FS1, ST, FS2.

Not only do I still have working FS2 original CDs but these as well:
-
I have the retail FS1, ST and retail FS2 CDs. I got each one basically when it came out. I've got the manuals and reference cards somewhere too, along with the FS2 strategy guide.
Not only do I still have working FS2 original CDs but these as well:
What is that? It looks like an enlarged and color version of the FS2 reference card.
Although these reference cards generally aren't useful to me since I always remap most of the keys in my games, and FS2 is no exception. :p

Keyboard overlay

Keyboard overlay
Those things work?
-
Never actually tried it. I just stuck it in a drawer with the manual and a cigar for some reason. Actually those fell behind the drawer where they were found about 2 years ago.
-
i used to save all my video game packaging at one point, but i put them in a closet for storage and there were some leaky pipes that destroyed all that stuff. but that was around 2000. after that i said **** it and got me a 72 disc cd case (which is now entirely full).
-
I got the retail fs2 version free with my PC. Then i used turey's installer to get the port and the rest. Only disc and manuals. If i ever saw it in the store and hadn't heard of it before, i would go, pfff!! I'm not paying that much for a blimmin' game!!
-
I got the ol' FS1 from a game magazine and i got hooked on it. a friend of my father gave me the fs1 strategy book for xmas. i was a happy little fella.
it took me years to find out that there was a sequel.
and 3 years ago i found u all and i lurked around a long time.
and now all my fs cds are scratched beyond use. ... happend when i lended the cds to someone... 3 horrible days without freespace.
yeah ... they are still around somewhere in my room. just for the nostalgic feeling.
-
For all of you who have discs that are scratched, may I recommend the Disc / DVD / Game / Skip DR device... it actually works when used as directed. I've had two of them so far; they're excellent. Just don't let the discs get dry when you're resurfacing them, that's bad. And sometimes you might have to resurface them several times if the scratches are deep. Oh, and if there are label-side scratches (scratches that make a hole so you can see straight through the disc) then you're toast if it's in the data area. http://www.digitalinnovations.com/ (heh, watch the vid - funny!)

QFT. And don't listen to the bull about how if it doesn't work after two tries it's worthless. I had to use it three or four with some discs.
-
if their still good just rip em to image files and mount em with daemon tools. that way you never have to de-case the cds. ive virtualized most of my old windows games. newer ones with uncracked copy protection and some old dos games (which wont let you install from windows) i just flip the discs. frankly i wonder why we even still use cds. they are ****ing obsolete, and dvds are just as bad. we have the tech to make a higher capacity drive capable of taking up only a 3.5" bay, and i wish someone would come up with a standard that would do that.
on the other hand, since the internets are getting bigger tubes, i really don't see why we cant just download everything. or at least have a game download kiosk at the game store, stick in your flash chip, pick a game, pay, and it gets copied over.

Then do it. You could be the next NetFlix, and you have the technical knowhow to do it. (I think) Of course, there wouldn't be much draw for it in Alaska...
-
its already been done, just not on as big a scale. and it would suffer the same problems as online music sales, that is there would be so much of a fuss over copy proofing it that it would pretty much discourage users from buying it, and screw anyone out of their purchase that did.
-
I distinctly recall seeing both Freespace: TGW and Freespace 2 on the shelves, but I'm ashamed to admit that the thought of buying either never crossed my mind at the time. 7 years later a friend introduced me to his copy of FS2, and I promptly found HLP and the SCP. I've searched high and low for an old copy in a bargain bin somewhere but it seems that few copies even found their way to Canada.

I remember my dad brought the game home, he got it from an American coworker, I believe.
-
I got all three CDs, the second one for FS2's a little shakey but the rest are fine. I bought FS2 after playing the Demo and then later on bought the FS1/ST bundle. Though I do remember seeing the original FS1 ad in CGW magazine.
-
I only ever had FreeSpace 2: Colossus. I was too young at the time to fully understand how to play well/correctly, but I loved it for its atmosphere. The only other computer game I'd played back then was Rogue Squadron, which is nowhere near as awesome.
-
I bought all three from my local game store. Then the installer of course.
I also 'liberated' 6 complete copies of FS2 that were slated for the Disk Shredder at work like around 2002ish...
I only got 6 disc ones, 14 disc twos, and 27 disc threes that day (posted a pic of them spread on my bed) He he.
;7

That's exactly what I did. Exactly. Coincidentaly, the joystick I bought to play Rogue Squad came with FS2:C.
-
I got my mom to buy me FS1 when I was 6 and it came with ST. They are all scratched to the gates of Hell and beyond and I still have my legit FS2 disk in good condition.
-
I have the original Conflict: Freespace, a second copy which included Silent Threat, and have somehow ended up with two copies of Freespace 2 (came back from a Lan party and found my copy had multiplied, quite odd really as we hadn't even got round to playing it - never did find out whose copy I had acquired - don't feel too bad since the FSO installer arrived)
Unfortunately I no longer have the boxes or manuals for them, but still have the jewel cases

Whoa. Creepy. Incidentally, add me to your list of Canadians. (and your list of people the same age as you.)
-
I don't have a list of people my age.
-
WHO does th@ ??????
-
:wtf:
I assume that you're drunk again. We're gonna have to start calling you Colonel Tigh. ;7
-
No, I was just pointing out another creepy coincidence. Not that anyone actually keeps a list like that.
-
Hi
I have the following FS stuff:
The white label box that contains "FS:the great war and FS2 + a disc with manuals and patches - UK release.
I also have a German version of the FS2 that i accidentally won on ebay ( I did not read the info re language :p)
Currently in process of going for th Open version of FS2.
Czz
-
I got freespace 2 when it was out and I'm fairly sure I've got all the boxes and stuff somewhere.... :nervous:
That's my lot though; I'd buy anything freespace if I saw it but I never have :blah:
-
Which version is this? It wasn't answered the last time I posted it, so I'm posting it again. It's got "FreeSpace 2: Colossus" written under the installation instructions, but it has all 30 missions.
-
I have FS1, ST and FS2 on CDs (German)
Also i've found a FS2 Multilanguage DVD Version with German, English and French on a jumble sale a few weeks ago. (i never know, that there was a multi-language release of this game?)
-
I have two copies of FS1: the original release, and the re-release with the Silent Threat bonus disk (which I was lucky enough to find in an EBGames and purchased just for the expansion). My FS2 copy is one of the Interplay 20th Anniversary prints that they shoveled out shortly before going belly-up; considering the price that FS2 was going for on eBay back then, $50 seemed like a huge bargain (and still does, in retrospect). All of my disks are still in near-mint condition, thankfully enough.
-
Lol i wasn't drunk. Just tired.
-
$50.00 wow that's a lot... I figured out who ordered those 500 copies of FS2 we ran that nov in 2003 (I work in a PA disk factory - music/games/& cshells). It was probably Schoolpop.com, they were selling them online for like $15.00 a pop.
-
I got my copy of FS2 (normal version) as a Christmas present in 1999 (or 2000? I don't remember). I had problems with and old audio driver, but in a week I resolved that and played.
Later, I also "obtained" a stripped down version of FS1 without cutscenes, music, voice wavs and without the Silent Threat expansion.
-

How? What kind of version...?
-
Probably some OEM version.
-
Snuffleupagus????   WTF?! the hell dat mean?
-
Just a poll option for people who don't have anything to vote.
-
Probably some OEM version.
But one such version should have music and voice wavs, at least...

I have all 3 CD's in paper cases with the quick start guide. As for what happened to the rest, i.e. the box, etc....
I was too young to remember. When I first saw FS2, I thought: "is that a game?"
Anyway, what the hell is Freespace2:Colossus?
-
Anyway, what the hell is Freespace2:Colossus?
A limited version of FS2 that was bundled with some joysticks.

Fixed.
-
How? What kind of version...?
Not sure if I can say it here... it was from an illegal game compilation (Twilight, IIRC). In order to have room on the CDs for other games, FS1 was stripped down of cutscenes and voice files (fortunately, FRED wasn't removed).
-
Sigh, I can't find my ST disc anywhere... wanted to view those additional videos... :( FS1 discs are right here underneath the monitor, casing's long gone though. Yep, Descent: FreeSpace on the introduction video.
Mine was an FS1+ST/Descent 3 bundle.
I guess I got it because of D3, but tried FS1 anyhow and got hooked. And FRED was interesting to play with, although at the time I had no idea how to do directives LOL.
FS2 is impossible to find where I live, I reckon... unless you somehow get lucky and happen to spot it on some backburner ignored and tucked-away shelf in a game store (but even that won't happen now). No wonder nobody around me knows of this game and its modding potential (but then again, they're all the generic gamers and not modders... babied by the simplified console generation? I don't know). :(
And on that note... waaahhhh my D2 is missing too!!! No way to try D2X-XL now :(

Was that compilation released with a magazine?

And you're allowed to talk about piracy etc, just not post links.

Still got Freespace 2 Colossus in perfect condition (can't say the same about the joystick it came with)
-
Ok slight bumpage but I have both FS1 and 2, the folding cases and the boxes/manuals.
-
FS1/Silent Threat jewel cases, and the FS1 Strategy guide? Hah
-
I used BitTorrent. :nervous:
It took me a week to download all three CD images and SCP 3.6.5...then I realised that CD2 could only be burned through Alcohol 120% because it was 780+ MB. :wtf:
-
ImgBurn (http://www.imgburn.com), or enable overburning on your CD burning app. But I didn't think disc 2 was that large... Hmm. IDK, I used Daemon Tools (http://www.daemon-tools.cc) to mount it from the Hard Disk as a virtual CD. Oh, and another good free CD-burning app is CDBurnerXP (http://cdburnerxp.se) (supports audio CDs & stuff, requires MS .Net Framework 2.0 to operate. ImgBurn can also rip images (make an image from a CD or DVD), not sure about CDBXP. But both are free and I use both.) An alternative to Daemon Tools is Virtual CloneDrive (http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html), which I also use.
-
I have the original retail versions of both - almost 10 years old now :).
-
Volition treated us good...so I bought the real CDs of all FS seies.
-
I own Freespace TGW, Silent Threat, and Freespace 2 =D ;7
-
I own FS 1 + ST (Dual Jewel version) and FS2 Colossus.
-
And you're allowed to talk about piracy etc, just not post links.
Oh yeah, I forgot that.
I mentioned a little about piracy on the Hamumu Forums and got a warning point. Maybe that's why I like HLP. ;)
-
I wouldn't go too in depth... but it's kind of well known that the majority of people didn't buy their CDs for freespace.
-
I used to. They came with the family's Gateway, along with MechWarrior 3, Quake III, and Unreal Tournament. (I was overwhelmed by levels of awesome previously unknown to me).
Sadly, I longed to share the experience, and loaned the disks to a buddy while in college.
...a month later, his apartment burned down.
Have I mentioned how very very glad I am you guys exist? XD
-
I wouldn't go too in depth... but it's kind of well known that the majority of people didn't buy their CDs for freespace.
The HLP community wouldn't be this big or lively otherwise.
-
'cause who'se gonna pay $80 for a ten year old game? Heh, and none of that money goes to Interplay, they already got all their money they're gonna get from this unless they re-release it (unlikely, due to compatibility issues with XP)
-
I have my old FreeSpace TGW DVD that came with an old IBM Desktop.
-

Lucky you. I came to know about FreeSpace 2 only because I got the initial release of Descent 3 with a Compaq desktop. That's computer, sadly, has snuffed it, but I still have the 2 CDs! :D
The second CD had the FS2 Trailer in it. ;)
-
I used to have 3 copies, but I gave 1 away years ago. FS2 Space Sim of the Year Edition + Original Edition, along with FreeSpace 1 and Silent Threat. Somewhere in storage is a Silent Threat poster.
-

:eek2:
You have a Silent Threat POSTER?
-
A promo item?
-
i have 2 descent freespace boxes and one freespace 2 boxes simply because fs2 was sold with fs1 in bundle for about 5-10 euro.
i dont know why your copies are all so expensive. i look today on ebay and find fs1 and fs2 for 1-5 euros. but whats the point about this, just download it with fso. its not like the creator will get money for that, or the freespace god will be angry about you for downloading it and send the shivans after you.
-
Um. People here aren't scared to download it illegally. 90% of us got it that way. (not me ;7)
-
:eek2:
You have a Silent Threat POSTER?
Writing extensively for the Descent Chronicles/Volition Watch, reviewing missions and teaching FRED had some benefits.
I picked up the poster when I had the privilege of seeing FreeSpace 2 in beta at Volition's offices -- my jaw dropped when I saw the beam weapons. And then I had to sign a NDA and gag myself for a few months. :(
I remember trying SquadWars for the first time and lining up for a choice shot at a Volition designer and...pop...someone triggered a collision bug. The shot passed directly through him, and we started writing down what actions we had been taking at the time. While there was another tweak to the code, I had the chance to see the Summoner demo which unfortunately crashed (not their day, it seemed).
-
It happens. Murphy's Law probably chose them to lay waste on that particular day. :blah:

I think I need to crawl through 10 years of debris in my attic to find it. Give me some time. :)
I recall it being very similar to the GTD Orion image on the cover for the Silent Threat CD:
-
its not like the creator will get money for that, or the freespace god will be angry about you for downloading it and send the shivans after you.
Play the Just Another Day campaigns and you`ll find how wrong you were... <_<
-
I wonder why the Orion on Silent Threat's cover looks like its firing blue beams, when beams didn't exist then.
-
The Deimos in the cinematic at the end of FS2 uses blue beams and blue lasers as well.
And has side turrets.
When clearly, its supposed to be green beams and green lasers.
-
You know, I tried re-colouring the beams to become blue, but apparently I need to give them new textures or something too... Oh well.
Any word on that poster? I'm mildly interested, because tbh I've only ever seen a Descent box here in S'pore, and never any FS-related stuff.
-
I have original CDs for both FS1 and 2, however I've managed to break CD1 for FS1.
The box has those stupid 5-way 'petal' things holding the CDs by the hole in the middle and it wouldn't let go of it and it snapped in half :(
-
FS2 only here. nowadays i just download from turey's since its much less hassle that way. but the box is still awesome :D

You have to like press down in the middle of them... and, if they give you a hard time, you need to, once you (successfully) get the CD out, break one of the petals so this doesn't happen.

Could I have a pic of these petals? IDK what you're referring to, but I have an idea.

I haven't got any intact examples remaining to show you :P, but imagine this:

being in the hole, and you're supposed to push the bit in the middle to release its vice-like hold on the disc.

I got all three... though i have two copies of Freespace 2... The Sci-Fi edition, disk 1 was scratched, so i went back and bought another one. Cost an arm and a leg, but i got 'em.
As for FS1 and Silent Threat, got 'em for my birthday years ago :D
You make me cry. Ever since disk 1 of my FS2 getting scratched (by my best friend, too! though I lack proof), I never got to buy another retail version...
Though I still own disks 2 and 3, as well as FS and Silent Threat.
[EDIT] Upon reading other posts, is it just me, or did EVERYONE scratch disk 1? Wow, this is just heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time.

Guys, the Disk / Game / DVD / Skip / Clean (http://www.digitalinnovations.com/) Dr device works. Trust me, I own two. ;)
-
Originally, I got FS1 and 2 on a Virgin "Red Label" budget re-release. Later I got original, big box FS2 and FS1 Battle Pack (inc Silent Threat) off ebay for about £15 total. I've also got a D3 budget re-release.
I miss the old big-box games. Made 'em look special. Not like moderns or older console games with their titchy boxes/cases.

I got freespace one as some sort of bundle with a video card ages ago... Purchased Silent Threat from a thrift shop, but I no longer own it - I think it was destroyed. *sadface*
Once I saw the played the FS2 demo, I knew I had to have it. Looked everywhere, the best deal was ordering it from a video game conglomerate in England. The only copy they had was a 'bundled' one as well, and they literally dug a 3cd package out of the back room, removed whatever was in it, and slapped a new label on it. I don't have any cover art, just a transparent case with three cds. looking at it now, it looks like I bought it from a street ...ahem ...vendor. I can still see the original label under the new one "Smart Stens 1st Grade" and a product number.
I have products/discs 11164,11181, and 11182, apparently.
GB for teh win!

GB? Great Britain?

i have all three retail games while i was in england along time ago, i think it was early 2000 i got them, so 7 years back and not a scratch has come to any of them. so far my accuracy has been above what my usual is in my entire freespace gaming career, above 80% for primary fire and 85% for secondary fire, typically killing 750 plus ships in the process and one of them is a Deimos from Deneb and the other is a Sathanas in Pegasi (im not sure).

I had to send FS2 back twice before I got a set that was readable and it was still scratched. All 3 sets were factory sealed. They look like someone ran sandpaper over them but still work. Hard cardboard does not make a good CD sleeve.

should of got a refund!. lucky though we have Turey to save your skin.

I have original CDs for both FS1 and 2, however I've managed to break CD1 for FS1.
The box has those stupid 5-way 'petal' things holding the CDs by the hole in the middle and it wouldn't let go of it and it snapped in half :(
You have to like press down in the middle of them... and, if they give you a hard time, you need to, once you (successfully) get the CD out, break one of the petals so this doesn't happen.
mine broke due to frequent usage :doubt:
(the petals, not the cd)
-
The problem with the petals is that, if they break, your CD case becomes useless in holding the CD in place.

I may well possibly burn in hell for what i'm about to reveal.....

Pity. Why kill you when you've already impaled yourself on your own sword? :blah:

The guilt and shame was eating me alive. I had to share :(

It's good to share. If you bottle everything up, you'll eventually explode like Mount St. Helens did in 1980. :blah:
-
99% of the games I play I physically own.
After my friend "lost" cd 1 or 2 (I forgot which) Karma came back and when I moved I accidently still had his copy of FF8... (unintentionally!)

I have FS 1 in a funny original Interplay box, (the stcker calls it a Dual Jewel) it is double sided and holds both FS The Great War and FS the Silent Threat and it takes a rocket scientist to get inside the things...they are mint
and i got a Japanese versoin of FS 2 after paying far more than i will admit...yuck am going to look for a mint sale box someday :)
-
Japanese eh?
Maybe you could upload the missions and voice sets so the could be available to any japanese SCP fans?
-
Happy to....but i suspect they are all vanilla. i will take a careful look..i have installed it twice and each time it makes a identical install to the main one here.
but i will check. :) so far only the CD stamped labels, (green with colored tones on them) are in Japanese
