Title: [Solved] Object size on 3D radar - FSPort
Post by: kisumu on January 07, 2011, 09:35:27 am
I'm having a problem on FSPort with the 3d radar where objects, particularly wingmen and other fighters (little arrow icons), appear far too large. The capital ships and other bits and pieces seem to look alright but these fighters just obscure the whole display so I can't wax the baddies efficiently.

Any ideas? I'd be grateful for any pointers, I am a massive novice.

Try turning 3d radar off? In the launcher settings.

I'm after a fix really if anyone knows of one, I think the 3d radar's a lot more useful than the normal one, however the icons are the correct size. Ta, anyway!

Right, this is highly embarrassing. It isn't actually FSPort that has the problem - I'd got myself in a muddle - I am really having trouble with FS2 with mediavps 3.6.12! Apologies to all. I've attached a screenshot nonetheless which shows transports next to fighters, but on the 3D radar the fighters dwarf the larger ships. It's not so much of an issue when there are only a few craft around but during larger fracas it can be a bit distracting. Sorry again!

Still clueless on this one. Does anyone know who put together the 3D radar option that's found on the fs2 open launcher? I could just hassle them directly! It's linked as orbradar on the wiki.

The fighters are larger because they are your wingmates and are closer to you than the transports.

Perhaps it's unclear on this screengrab but regardless of distance the wingmen/fighter icons remain at that size on the radar, whereas the larger ships seem to be of appropriate scale. I'll get another, clearer picture to demonstrate this - hang on!

Ok, so the fighter I've targeted is around 600m away, the capital ship about 1100-1300, on the radar the fighter is massive! And the big b*gger is hardly even showing up. When a few fighters are near each other the icons just merge and become indistinguishable from each other. It's much easier to see on this picture, sorry for the cack one before!

Turn off 3D radar if you are using the radar icons VP

Where's the vp located? I apologise for being such a doilum. Also, if I turn off this vp (when I find it) will the 3d radar revert to having dots and lines for contacts? Because that is fine by me, I think it looks better anyway. Cheers for the help!

3d radar is not a vp, it's a Launcher setting. Should be in HUD.

Assuming kisumu wants to disable the radar icons: it's most likely the .vp file that has "RadarIcons" in some form in the file name. Move it away and the icons should die peacefully.

Good point. I'll just be extra clear.

It looks like the issue is a mixing of the 3D Radar and Radar Icons options.

Both of those are, as said, optional enhancements.

3D Radar gives you the orb-like area where you can see where things are a little more clearly in a 3D like space. It comes with the orange and purple lines there marking the "orb" area. It was originally set up to display dots only where ships are located. 3D Radar is a Launcher setting under the Features tab and the HUD sub-option. You can turn it on and off there.

Radar Icons is a VP Pack including icons and a table. It enables the use of Icons instead of dots on the radar allowing for "at a glance" access to what ships are around you. The VP *should* be installed in your MediaVPs and labeled MV_RadarIcons.vp. You can turn this feature off by removing the VP.

These two options are incompatible with each other and you need to choose one or the other.

...you need to choose one or the other.
Riiiight! I hadn't understood the conflict between the enhancements, but this is now clear. Thanks for all the help, chaps (and chapessess (possibly)), that's me sorted. I'm going back to 3d radar with dots and lines, which for me is the more "realistic" looking of the two. Again, thanks very much!

PROBLEM BEAMED.
