Title: Blocky/pixellated smoke
Post by: Scratchspider on November 24, 2012, 06:05:01 pm
So ever since I started playing, I've had a (minor) problem. Instead of damage-indicating smoke, I see these weird black squares as shown in the attached picture. It's not a big deal, I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem and/or knows what might cause it. My drivers are up to date as far as I can tell, and everything else in the game works just fine.

Done. And thanks for the move, I didn't notice there was a whole board for tech help.

Code: [Select]
  OpenGL Vendor    : Intel
OpenGL Renderer  : Intel(R) HD Graphics Family
  OpenGL Version   : 3.1.0 - Build 8.15.10.2538
There you go. Diaspora doesn't support integrated cards. Given the kind of issue you're experiencing, I suggest you disable soft particles (Features / Graphics in launcher).

If the intel integrated isn't the main GPU of your comp, you'll have to force FSO to use that graphic card through whatever control panel your card uses.

Whoops, that's actually not the problem. My computer lets me use ATI Catalyst to switch between the integrated card and the higher performance gpu for different programs. I set regular Diaspora to run on my non-interated card, but it looks like Catalyst sees regular Diaspora and Debug mode as two separate programs so Debug was running on the integrated card. I probably should have realized that when my fps dropped below 10...
I'll run another debug using the non-integrated card and post it in a few minutes. The issue still appears when I use the non-integrated card.
And thanks for looking into it.

Huh. I can't seem to get Debug to run on my good card. I guess I'd better solve that problem before anything else then. Any ideas?

Can you tell us what ATI model you're using ? It's still possible your ATI is too weak for Diaspora...

ATI Radeon HD 6470m. It does run Diaspora smoothly, even on fairly high settings. It's just Diaspora's Debug mode that won't run on it.
But like I said, even when I run Diaspora on the HD 6470, I still get the blocky smoke, which is why I'd like to get a debug log with that card running.

How does it 'not run' on the good card? Even if there is no visible indication of the game running, a log might still be generated. You may want to check if this is not the case.

When I set it to run on the hd 6470 in catalyst control it instead runs on the integrated card, as shown in the previous log I posted. So the game runs in debug, but only on the integrated hd graphics card; it refuses to use the good card even when I tell it to. It generates a log regardless.
So now the issue is getting it to run on the good card so someone can take a look at that log and figure out what's up.

Keep in mind the release and the debug are two different exes. If you set the release exe to run with your ATI, that won't automatically set the debug to run with it.

Yeah, that's what the problem was when you checked the first log. But even after I switched the debug exe it still didn't run on the good card. (see attached screenshot)
