Problem with "Web cursor bitmap not found" - solution
First I want to say hi to all, great forum =)

My Problem:
I'm running linux, installing FS2_open went fine. Downloaded the mediavps(3.6.10) and the RC2 executables.
Now i tried to start fs2 with activated mediavps -> "Web cursor bitmap not found" - Error
Did a wiki-search on this page here -> found the solution "chown <user> /path/to/vpfiles/ -R"
Tried again to start fs2_open but it did not work, same error :(
I already re-downloaded the mediavps -> no change at all
By the way, starting fs2_open without the option -mod mediavps works fine!

Hope you can help me!

djmce

(I think there's a simple solution which i overlooked ;) )

So...you can run the game fine without the MediaVPs, but with the MediaVPs you get that error?

Because that error usually means you don't actually have Freespace 2 installed, just Freespace Open. It does require a retail copy of FS2.

Re: Problem with "Web cursor bitmap not found" - solution
:wtf: Uh, could you provide screenshots of the \freespace2\ folder and the \mediavps\ folder? Preferrably so that all the files are visible.

So...you can run the game fine without the MediaVPs, but with the MediaVPs you get that error?
Rather weird. If there is no FS2, it shouldn't run, mods or no mods.

*takingcam*

On the screenshot you can see the error in the terminal.
That's the weird thing; its running without mediavps...
I even reinstalled it three times from different cd's (a pc-magazine dvd and my retail copy) !

Any ideas?

Thanks for help =)

Re: Problem with "Web cursor bitmap not found" - solution
Hmm. And you are using the Linux builds and not the Windows builds?

What is that patchw32.dll? I think I've seen it, but can't remember what it was related to.

If that's a 3.6.10 RC2 debug that I spot from the pic, try running it. With luck it can go through the .vp files. That way the fs2_open.log file in \freespace2\data\ would reveal if any of the files are corrupt.

As a side note, if you have the 3.6.10 MediaVPs, and if you installed them manually, there is no need for ls_neb.vp, since the LS Nebulae and the modified retail missions are included in the MediaVPs.

seems like an error to me ;) Would it help to know that i'm running the german version of the game?
@ Lobo : I've run the install trough wine -> the patch32.dll has something to do with the update-function in windows i guess. Thanks for the side note ;)

Re: Problem with "Web cursor bitmap not found" - solution
You seem to be lacking the retail files.
See the picture in his previous post. He has FS2 installed.

Well, this is odd ****. The game engine stops going through the .vp files after it has finished with the MediaVPs. I really don't understand why. I have slight fever so I may not be at my sharpest.

But one thing came to my mind: you have a German version, correct? You'll need a temporary unofficial patch with the 3.6.10 MediaVPs. Uno momento, I'll try to find it.

Ohh, that'd do it. Put the MediaVPs in a subfolder of your Freespace 2 directory. FSOpen goes over Freespace 2, not somewhere else.

Re: Problem with "Web cursor bitmap not found" - solution
The MediaVPs being in ~/.fs2_open/mediavps wouldn't be a problem, it's a perfectly valid way to run things on non-Windows builds.

I guess everyone else has missed it so far, but the problem appears to be that it's run via a script or symlink which isn't setting the working directory properly (it looks like you may just run it directly, which is the wrong way to use the binary in this case).  It's trying to run out of ~ when it should be running in ~/Apps/freespace2 in order to find the retail VPs.  Make sure that you are running the binary from within ~/Apps/freespace2 and that should fix it.  I think that there may be a shell script listed in the wiki for you to use to set the working directory properly, but if not let me know and I'll send you mine.

Re: Problem with "Web cursor bitmap not found" - solution
Ok, i "installed" the patch which i alread knew from my freespacefolder in windows ;)

Putting the mediavps in the ~/.fs2_open/mediavps - folder worked in previous versions =)

taylor, what do you mean with "running the binary within ~/Apps/freespace2" ?

i think this

Code: [Select]
marcel@marcel-laptop:~/Apps/freespace2$ ~/Apps/freespace2/fs2_open_3_6_10_RC2 -mod mediavps
Unrecognized command line parameter "-2d_poof".  Ignoring...
Unrecognized command line parameter "-alpha_env".  Ignoring...
ERROR: "mv_strings-lcl.tbm is corrupt" at localization/localize.cpp:608

and get an error i know from windows...which should be solved with the hotfix

Any more hints?

Thanks a lot =)

The -2dpoof and alpha_env things are harmless. Now, the strings issue has to do with foreign language versions, so...

I can't remember what the "patch" is, but assuming that it's a VP then be sure to put it in ~/.fs2_open/mediavps to make sure it will override what's there.

Basically just like you did just now.  Essentially you just "cd ~/Apps/freespace2", then run the binary ("./fs2_open_3_6_10_RC2 -mod mediavps" would be enough in this case).  Then if you check fs2_open.log you should see where it's looking for VPs in ~/Apps/freespace2.

You can of course use a shell script to do that for you so that you can easily run the game from the applications menu or from a link on the panel or something, unless you just really want that little bit of console output it gives on start up. :)

Hi all,

i'm awake and here again ;)

I applied the patch and put the german_hotfix.vp included in the patch-package into the ./fs2open/mediavps - folder.
Now i tried to run the game - no "web cursor error" anymore but still

Code: [Select]
marcel@marcel-laptop:~/Apps/freespace2$ ./fs2_open_3_6_10_RC2 -mod mediavps
Unrecognized command line parameter "-2d_poof".  Ignoring...
Unrecognized command line parameter "-alpha_env".  Ignoring...
ERROR: "mv_strings-lcl.tbm is corrupt" at localization/localize.cpp:608
the "mv_strings"- is corrupt - error and the log says

Ah, i don't know what to do, seems to be allright besides the corrupt mv_strings - which already should be patched through the hotfix (maybe it doesn't work^^)
Do you think an english retail copy would solve the problems?  :doubt:
But i still wonder why it runs without activated mediavps  :wtf:

Re: Problem with "Web cursor bitmap not found" - solution
Hi all!

I moved the german_hotfix.vp in every possible folder for *vp-files, but nothing worked :(
Still no ideas?

Thanks for your help =)

Re: Problem with "Web cursor bitmap not found" - solution
I find it strange that your log doesn't show any mention of the retail files.... Also, that ls_neb.vp (Lightspeeds' Nebula pack, I believe?) is unnecessary, IIRC.

Re: Problem with "Web cursor bitmap not found" - solution
Did a wiki-search on this page here -> found the solution "chown <user> /path/to/vpfiles/ -R"
Did you verify that the owner is now set properly?

Re: Problem with "Web cursor bitmap not found" - solution
I applied the patch and put the german_hotfix.vp included in the patch-package into the ./fs2open/mediavps - folder.
Now i tried to run the game - no "web cursor error" anymore but still
Be sure to run the debug build again, because the log that you listed is the same as the first one.  Include the updated log that that should offer some clue as to what the remaining problem might be.
