Title: A thread in which I turn warships into anime girls
Post by: Strygon on May 15, 2019, 05:39:14 pm
Using magical tools called hands and my magic wand called "pen", I have decided to turn space ships into cute anime girls, Kantai Collection style.

So far I've only drawn up Orion-tan. Next up is Lucifer-chan.

(This one ended slipper than usual, due to me drawing part of it on a train and part of it in a completely sleep deprived state. I'll try to make the next ones look better)

The perspective is slopply executed , and as result the proportions seem all wrong.
Your use of shading is crude, so that in effect it exaggerates the flat nature of the image rather than generate an illusion of depth. /Exaggeration for effect

... but what do I know? - Keep at it and we'll see where you arrive eventually.

All aboard!

Inb4 poop deck joke.

Can you do the strike craft too please?   I expect the Ursa to be a bit "heavy".

Once I finish big Lucy and the Hatsheput, I could look into humanising some strikecraft too. Some ships like Ursa or Manticore make for some easy designs.

It'd be more interesting to do those with "the male form", I think

Certainly it would provide a look beyond the pure exercise of skill...

Have to admit, that i actually do not understand the topic and what the anime girl in the OP has to do with a GTD Orion

Basically it's a thread where I post humanised versions of various FS2 warships. Something along the lines of Kantai Collection (a Japanese game where old WW2 warships are resurrected as anime girls). The girl in the OP is literally just the Orion if the Orion were an anime girl instead of the warship. There are some similarities visible between the ship and the person (namely the carrier deck she's carrying on her arm, and the turret.)

That sounds like a show that's particular popular in Korea and China. :drevil:

Enioch introduced me to this concept in his thread where he played a warship game, and spiced it up with narrative fiction and pictures of, among other things, anime girls representing battleships. Here:

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=92847.0

As for the thread itself though, while I have nothing against the concept, I don't think it really fits Freespace, because the ships, at least the Terran ones, are named after some of this lot:

(https://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/pantheon-ancient-greek-gods-mythology-set-characters-names-flat-vector-illustration-white-pantheon-ancient-greek-123443479.jpg)

Figures from Greek mythology. And the Vasudans are Egyptian equivalents. Not sure about Shivans. It seems if you were going to do this it would be better to meld ship design and the figure they were named after.

Yesssss..... but I do intend to keep the mythology out of this, more or less, and focus on purely humanising the ship design itself instead, as is done in Kantai Collection, which I based this thread idea off of. At the end of the day, it's anime girls, I don't think everything needs to be super accurate anyways.

(and do remember the description of the arts & talents board, it doesn't have to fully be FS related)

Yes, do as you please. I just thought it worth mentioning.
Title: Re: A thread in which I turn warships into anime girls

Well most of the FS ships have mythological names. But most of them have been interpreted in countless ways (just think about Orion), so a FS-Anime original thing would be better IMO.

Hoo, here's finally, after two massive delays, a humanised version of SD Lucifer.

Oh dear, I didn't know it was already done before. Sorry for basically just redoing it (with worse art).

Meh, each is free to have their own take on a particular concept, be it anthropomorphised ships (see Kancolle, Aoiki Hagane no Arpeggio, all the threads we mentionned so far, etc.), post-Capella history (see Inferno, Derelict, Blue Planet, etc.), or whatever else you fancy.

And besides if it's something that inspires you to practice your art skills, all the better. You can't improve if you don't practice, and if you have to practice, better it be on something that you like. I for one would encourage you to keep going.

But wait. I think I don't properly understand this kind of art... But if I don't get it... Does that mean I am sane?

May I actually request Hades-chan, as evil, dark, female mage with big freaking tits?

Hades-chan as a practitioner of the dark arts, sporting some massive juggernauts? On it, as soon as I get the other requests (Sathanas-chan, Ursa-chan and Sobek-chan) out of the way first.

A bit slow. I've got some pieces thrown together (basically three girls drawn up, one with several variations for expressions) but they're pretty much due for a rework themselves.

The 'talent' part is correct but honestly based on the quality of these drawings Strygon needs to learn a lot more to be a great artist. That's not an insult, it's a reminder of the potential for improvement.

I think it's mostly just me needing to put more time and effort into them, a single drawing of such quality usually takes me 2-3 hours, which is not a lot. I don't pretend to be any good at drawing, I'm just trying hard to improve as much as possible, although it may not seem like it.

Your issues are on side of technique not talent. So practice is always good.

Also time spend is relative, once you have learned a set of techniques, they will be second nature rather than careful application.
