Currently FSPort is using the FS2 medals for things. I aim to remedy that situation.
Here's the Wiki page (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Awardable_Medals) with original images so that you can compare before you inevitably tell me they aren't retail-like enough.

new medals, yay!
-
Hell yes! These look awesome! I really appreciate your dedication for our entertainment ;)
One of these medals belongs to you! (one question: is it possible to implement completely new medals or is the code not able to do such things in an easy way?)
-
Implementing new medals has nothing to do with the code really. You need to have a set of images for the medal and a place for it to go in the medal box. If you have all of that, then you just table it in.
-
Sweet. I seem to remember someone working on redoing the FS2 medals in a similar fashion, but it looks like their topic has been dead for almost a year.
-
Yeah, they were in progress.. and if they aren't released by the time I finish the FS1 medals.. then I'll do the FS2 ones. (Should be pretty easy given that the FS2 medals are mostly repeats.)
-
Just a small critique, but the vertical axis of the distinguished flying cross appear to be missing some detail while at the same time the horizontal axis appears to look much nicer. Is that on purpose or are you using some kind of software to generate it?
Just trying to help really don't hurt me :shaking:
-
retail medals didn't look realistic at all. These don't either. What about giving them more metal appearance? Maybe even renders. Also, they are... straight. Retail positions, a little on the side, were more natural. Also, the last one needs more 3d look, coz it looks cheap in comparison with retail one.
-
lighting/camera angles.. these are rendered straight on.. you are used to seeing them with perspective in the medal case.
-
So these are renders of 3D models, then?

Yes, they are.
I especially like the horse head on the Conspicuous Gallantry, looks much better that the original  Aesthetically, I'd give its ribbon some yearn to accentuate the colour boundaries - a matter of personal preference though. On all of them, the connection between brace and medal might look better as a sort of knob, like I did for most of the SA ones. The simple bar looks a bit cheap compared to the rest of the medal, especially on the Gallantry where it's extra long.
-
A knob.. or I might go the extra mile and make it more chain like.. maybe a ring or something?
I played with various ways of giving the ribbon some cloth texture, but at the scale that these will be rendered at, you just can see it at all... I can try do more with the metals too though.
-
Oh, I didn't mean actual cloth texture, just that the Gallantry ribbon could use a contrasting lining. Perhaps some bright thread separating the green from the red?
On the topic of textile, though, I found that a noise texture gives a bit of a velvet-y look (see my medals, bar the Honour), while fairly reflective, saturated and plain-colour looks more silky (e.g. the orange and green on your Commendation). Or I might have been getting too much into it :)
A ring or chain sounds interesting, definitely worth a shot.

Updated the images in the first post. Now using chain links, which does look much better, IMO. Distinguished Service Cross up next.
-
These look pretty awesome. Thanks for doing them!

very nice
-
This one proved to be more difficult to look nice. I think V got away with it because of low resolution.. but with more detail is looked pretty plain, so I added the etchings.

Anyway, nice going mjn!

I'd never noticed it before, but the bird's body on the wings looks something like a penguin. :p
-
Hi-res full case.
3k version for added awesome. (http://www.lunardigitalproductions.com/images/freespace/medals/FS1-Medals-3k.jpg)
-
I would perhaps darken the red inlay of the case and brighten the red of the rank pins but other than that excellent work.
-
What headdie said.
-
Those look great! I really dig the reflections on the case siding from the top ribbons. I think a bit of shadow under the medals might help tie it together and sell the impression of the case being on display under an overhead spot lamp. I'll have to go for the full set when the next MediaVPs come out :)
-
Yeah, my next step is to create the medal indents in the leather.
-
It's amazing how fast you're able to churn out stuff that looks this good. "What'd I do on my lunch break? Modeled a few dozen medals, no big deal."
-
Now with indents, etc. If everything goes my way.. I'll be able to have those reflections on the case from the medals in-game only when those medals are present. Gotta wait till SCP is out of the code freeze to make my request though. :)
Full FS1 Case

-
Aw, man. I was fond of my FS2 case recolor. Maybe make the indents just a bit deeper? I feel like if the medal case got hung up somewhere all the medals would fall out.
-
This is what I call awesomeness! Good job mjn!

Seconded...slightly deeper indents couldn't hurt

Weren't there 2 different rank insignia, kinda like on ST:TNG where there's a solid pip and an empty one?

Remove the red circle and there you have it.
