Title: Starshatter Downloads Page
Post by: rscaper1070 on May 24, 2012, 01:01:10 am
Here's what you need to start playing Starshatter. First, if you haven't already, create a folder C:\Games. Now download the following files.

Full Game (http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.840) 521.04 MB

New Starshatter.exe (https://storage.googleapis.com/google-code-archive-downloads/v2/code.google.com/starshatter-open/Starshatter%205.1.66.7z) Mirror (https://dev.tproxy.de/mirror/starshatter/Starshatter%205.1.66.7z) 2.1 MB

Starshatter Reborn (effects mod) (http://freespacemods.net/download.php?view.839) 35 MB

Unzip the full game to C:\Games. Now you have a folder C:\Games\Starshatter The Gathering Storm. Open up this folder and delete the player.cfg and video.cfg files. The game will recreate these files when you run the game the first time.

Next unzip Starshatter 5.1.66.7z into C:\Games\Starshatter The Gathering Storm and say yes to overwrite. Here's the release info (http://code.google.com/p/starshatter-open/downloads/detail?name=Starshatter%205.1.66.7z&can=2&q=) for the contents of the zip.

Now unzip SS_Reborn.7z into C:\Games\Starshatter The Gathering Storm\Mods. This is an effects mod that also has a few fixes for things like carriers.

Right click Starshatter.exe and create a shortcut on the desktop. Right click the shortcut and select Properties. At the end of the target line add " -nosplash " (no quotes). This gets rid of the start up splash screen and speeds up the loading process. Set Compatibility to Windows XP SP2 and check the Disable Desktop Composition box. This fixes a problem with the cursor not reaching the bottom of the screen.

Now fire up the game and navigate to the options screen and change the resolution and whatever else you prefer. Some screen resolutions won't be available so if this is the case find the video.cfg in C:\Games\Starshatter The Gathering Storm and edit it with notepad. Afterwards right click on video.cfg and set it to Read Only. This will keep your resolution from changing every time you enable a mod.

Go into Mod Config and select SS Reborn and hit Enable. Hit Accept and restart the game.

Look in C:\Games\Starshatter The Gathering Storm\Manuals for the game manual.

IMPORTANT NOTE

In order to run, Starshatter Open needs the MSVC 2010 redistributable installed and DirectX updated to latest.

Question (http://gameupdates.org/details.php?id=5035&viewcomm=5058#comm5058) for people that have vox.7z from the gameupdates torrent.

Vox.dat is included in the full game download in the OP.  The SS_Reborn that's listed in the torrent is an old version though. You should download the one in the OP.

Edit: Ok, I just scrolled down and saw your question. The answer is yes vox.dat has to go into C:\Games\Starshatter The Gathering Storm.

I am willing to help mirror these files on fsmods if it's okay with the project maintainers. A new subsection will be created.

I've run into a bit of trouble getting Starshatter to start up.  For the record, I followed the instructions in the opening post to the letter.  When I first attempted to launch the game it told me I was missing a DLL file.  Specifically, msvcr100.  I downloaded the missing DLL from dll-files.com and chucked it in the game directory.  This time when I attempted to start the game a new error message appeared.

Unfortunately, I don't believe the game generated an error log of any kind.  If someone can provide me with instructions on how to create one I will post it.

I've attached an image of the error message I'm getting.   I hope that helps.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and it has the latest patches from Microsoft.  The graphics card is an NVIDIA Geforce 250 GTS.  The driver version is 296.10.  I know its not the latest version that was released this month.  I prefer to not update my video card drivers right after a new batch is released.  Just in case they missed any bugs.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

This has to do with a missing Visual C++ Redistributable package but I can't remember which one. In the original install guide at starshattermods I had a link that The E provided that fixed this issue. As soon as we figure it out I'll update the OP.

For right now here's the MS Answers Page (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/the-program-cant-start-becuase-msvcr100dll-is/5c9d301a-2191-4edb-916e-5e4958558090).

Unfortunately, this did not resolve the issue.  I'm still receiving the same error message as before.

Please forget that a site like dll-files.com even exists :P Those things do generally more harm than good.

As for the error posted, that one generally hints at a corrupted registry. I generally do not like to advise it, but using one of the registry cleaning programs available may be able to help here.

I was on Hughesnet jr2, but I'm back home now.

Solution for HughesNet:  Hotspot Shield (http://hotspotshield.com/) (paid Elite version is faster with no ads, currently @ $29.95 a year, use code TechBargains20 to get a 20% discount off of that).

What happens: you get one of the most popular VPN services... and... well, just take a look at your HughesNet download allowance after downloading/uploading something.  Gosh darn, whoops, that's a crying shame.

My guess is HSS/HSS Elite is accidentally using some port that HughesNet is set to 'ignore' traffic on, perhaps for their corporate customers (the Front Desks at all of the Super 8s in my area use HN for whatever stupid reason.. it's slow, but it's steady and absolutely unlimited).

Anywho, if you're ever in a pinch, I'd use HSS, and if you're in a pinch with HN a lot, I'd fork over money for Elite (like I did, as I have to use it at home)

[grumble]FYI, HughesNet FAP caps are:

USD per month:$40$80$110Biz:$60$80$110$200$350
MB U&D allotted within any 24-hour timespan:250MB350MB450MBBiz:250MB350MB450MB850MB850MB
Speed (Down/Up):1Mb/200Kb1.5Mb/250Kb2.0Mb/300KbBiz:1Mb/200Kb1.5Mb/250Kb2Mb/300Kb3Mb/512Kb5Mb/1024Kb

Any amount uploaded/downloaded past your "FAP" or Fair Access Policy gets you landed in a 24-hour dial-up speed mode.  This is to ensure "Fair, fast speeds for all users" and blah blah blah.. unless you have $10, in which case they will reset your allowance.  Ooh, I get it, it's more fair if you have more money?  Anyways, there are some encouraging signs, you can "bank" a day's worth of download allowance (so if you don't use the Internet you get 200% of your download allowance until you use it), you do get two free "reset tokens" (which otherwise cost $10) per month, and there has always been a window from around 2AM-7AM where your download/upload activity does not count against you. EDIT: Oh, and the Up & Down speeds are "max", you never get anywhere near that, ever, except, I've heard, during your first month of service, which is the period where you can get out of your two-year contract with them without paying an early termination fee.[/grumble]

Now that you have the C++ package installed try deleting the mvscr1000.dll or whatever it is from your starshatter directory. From what I have read the current error you are getting come from mismatching 32 and 64 bit programs. This is just a shot in the dark, but give it a try and see what happens. If you go back to getting the original error then some have solved this by copying the .dll into their system32 directory. By advised though that microsoft support does not think this is a good idea, but apparently it does work for some folks. I would at least try deleting the file from your starshatter directory and see what that does.

I have a different problem.
The new exe supplied above does not launch correctly. Without so much as a black screen, "Starshatter has encountered a problem and needs to close. The game runs fine with the original exe and dll. I found the attached log, but I don't know what the error indicates. It might have something to do with having a 32 bit system, but eh.

You could try putting the game in C:\Games but otherwise I don't know. If you have to use the original exe be sure and change the compatibility mode to Windows XP SP2 and turn off desktop composition.

rscaper, out of curiosity, are also the modfiles like the solcom and guardian mods preserved or still accessible?

I have quite a few and I'm sure braddw25 has even more. It's just a matter of uploading them all.

Mike,

All of the mods that were uploaded at Starshattermods.com were preserved on wdboyds ftp site. I have been able to transfer them all to my hard drive and am now in the process of uploading them to

www.spacesimcentral.com

It will take some, but all of the mods will eventually be posted including the two you mentioned and one other one that might interest you called Renegad Legion. LOL I actually am planning on revisiting that mod now that I have gotten better at 3d modelling to upgrade some of the ship meshes to make them look better. By the way, speaking of RL and our old mod team is akalabeth still around? Haven't heard from him in ages.

I ran the registry cleaner built into CCleaner recently and it came back clean.  This Windows install is not that old.  Maybe a year tops.

I already tried removing the DLL file.  The game just goes back to telling me I'm missing it.  I also ran a search of my entire main drive.  Turns out my computer already has the so called missing DLL file.  I think it might be a different version though.

I also checked and I have the latest Direct X files.  I'm at a loss as to what could be causing this.

I have Starshatter with an nVidia card and Win 7 x64 and it works.  Have you tried installing the DirectX 9.0c redistributable package from June 2010 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109)?  IIRC MS stopped included all necessary DirectX files to run older games, so you need that to run them.  I didn't have to, but Steam has installed 'DirectX' files for older games many times, so I think that covered it for me.  EDIT: Steam has also installed MS Visual C++ 20xx packages too.. IDK which ones, but I have 2005, 2008, and 2010 in add/remove programs at this point.  Maybe 2005?

I would love to point you there, but it's a privately owned and password protected ftp site. I am not sure that the owner would be happy with me if I were to give out his sign in information.  If there is something specific that you want, let me know and I can make sure to get it uploaded to spacesimcentral now. I anticipate all of the mods being uploaded to ssc by the end of this week anyway. At that time all the mods will be available to anyone who wants them.

You could try doing a google search for his e-mail address to see if you can find a place that he still frequents, IIRC I did that once to track someone down.  You could also try using the IM part of the deal; maybe he still uses that (I doubt it but hey!) e.g., [email protected] < just try using Yahoo IM and see if they are ever on, even if they don't ever check that e-mail any more.

"The URL that you are attempting to access is a potential security risk. Trend Micro OfficeScan has blocked this URL in keeping with network security policy."

Yeah, it's dumb.  But unless I want to not be able to connect to my campus internet (which is all of my internet during the school year), I can't ditch it.

Well I've given TrendMicro some "feedback." Their designation must be based on old information, or a false positive. I'm going to go through my backups now to see if there is anything odd.

Perhaps you could link the FS Mods page to the Google Code page? This would keep everything, or links to everything, in one conveniant location.

Please ensure that you have the latest DirectX installed on your PC. A quick Google search should find it on the Microsoft website.
I think there's a command you can type into the "Start" -> "Run" box called 'dxdiag' that will bring up details of any DirectX installed.

In case you didn't catch on from Echelon's reply, if a program ever complains about missing d3d9 or d3dx9 or anything like that - your direct X is out of date.

Hi there... late to the party but I thought I would give this a try. A couple questions.

First does anyone know how to "Disable Desktop Composition" under Windows 8

Second I am not sure about this "New Starshatter Executable" as to if it is still needed.

Thanks

Not sure if it's needed with the new exec, but if it is, Google is your friend:

https://www.google.com/search?q=disable+desktop+composition+for+a+program+in+windows+8

First three results:

http://superuser.com/questions/581673/disable-desktop-composition-in-windows-8-force-it

Quote
Microsoft says that DWM is always on in Windows 8 but that's not true. WinPE4 (tiny Windows 8) has no DWM. Actually, DWM is on because of Metro so if you disable DWM the Start Screen will turn black and you can't see anything. Winlogon.exe spawns a new DWM.exe process so if you kill DWM.exe it restarts.

Solution?

Use PSSuspend.exe or Process Explorer from sysinterals.com
Follow the command line instructions for PSSuspend
If you're using GUI Process Explorer than right click on the winlogon.exe process and click Suspend. Then, kill DWM.exe.

This is to disable desktop composition in windows 8 and 8.1.

This does not apply to:
Fullscreen users (not windowed borderless)
Other operating systems (Desktop composition is a lot easier to disable in other operating systems)

Use Process Explorer and run it as Administrator

Do the following steps in order:

KILL explorer.exe

SUSPEND winlogon.exe
[This is so you can do the next step without it re-opening automatically]

KILL dwm.exe
[This is what you don't want to be running, it's the desktop windows manager and has desktop composition. this gets in the way]

RUN explorer.exe
[File > Run... in Process Explorer, allows opengl to be used and basic OS navigations excluding metro start menu]

RESUME winlogon.exe when you want dwm.exe back (or restart)
[You may have to kill explorer again and suspend winlogon.exe again to get it to be resumeable]

The benefit to doing this is a dramatic reduction in cursor latency.
The downfall is the start menu goes to black and can't be used at all.

This has actually become very safe and easier to do. Now I really do recommend it to anyone on Windows 8 / 8.1

A humble animator reaches out to XDA..

Switching to Windows 8 destroys the ability to use one of the most streamlined and dynamic animation programs ever made.
Macromedia's Flash MX ( Version 6 ) Why this version? It's the version before Adobe bought it, and messed with the brush engine. Pressure
sensitive brush lines are amazing, sharp, and precise compared to later Adobe versions. Many cartoonists prefer drawing in it.

Flash's vector engine clashes with Windows "glass" and DWM composition though. The program works fine, but in Windows 7, one must
disable desktop composition in compatibility settings, or navigating through to edit a symbol is incredibly slowed down. ( by about 500%! )

So, in switching to Windows 8, disabling DWM is not possible any longer, and thus - working in Flash 6 is broken forever.

Has anyone managed to turn off DWM in Win 8 through any kind of hack, or using old DWM code?
Help! Flash isn't the only app affected by this!

Cry.. sob.. etc..

BTW, you will have to replace dwm.exe before rebooting or logging off, or you will have bricked your installation
Don't run explorer, or else bad things will happen. Ex7 for windows 8 will work fine.

Wow! This does in fact work.. without rebooting.
That last step of deleting / moving dwm.exe not necessary.

I used process explorer to:
open cmd.exe
kill explorer.exe
SUSPEND winlogon.exe
kill dwm.exe
in cmd: run flash.exe

when done: unsuspend winlogon.exe - everything returns to normal.

Now if I can only automate this. Hmm.. maybe I can try and whip something up in autoit or autohotkey so that this can all be done on the fly for any
particular app..

Thanks!

Bad things might happen if you leave winlogon suspended for too long, that's why the move dwm step exists

Find an old direct x redistributable package and install it  -  to save download size, newer versions of direct x didn't have all of the old. Dll files.

Try 8.1 iirc,  and  9.0c
Or  (better idea)  Google which direct x package you will need to install to get that file.

Just tested all 3 files in the OP; all come back clean -- so the corruption was during download; try re-downloading, and, if it's still corrupting, try using a download manager like Free Download Manager (http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/) and see if that helps (that's what I use).

Also After I went through the directions on the first page, It played fine.. However when I go into the menu to select mods,  I see about  other names besides the Reborn mod..

content.dat
starshatterupdate.dat

Should I also enable those??

Title: Starshatter Source code available anywhere?
Post by: ShodanSpectre on July 26, 2017, 01:09:00 pm
<I hope someone is still subscribed to this old threads and will actually read this...>

Hello guys!
It seems like the source code is no longer available at the repository http://starshatter-open.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ indicated in the thread "Getting the Starshatter source and compiling it".
I tried to do an SVN checkout from there and got:
Error: Unable to connect to a repository at URL
Error:  'http://starshatter-open.googlecode.com/svn/trunk'
Error: '/svn/trunk' path not found
- while I do have a working SVN that successfully runs with other repositories.

I understand that it's been a while but, I was hoping that someone might still have some backup laying around on some old external HDD or something.

Why am I interested? Well I'm a game developer and I'd really like to familiarize with code of games outside of what I'm working on daily. Specifically games created by one person, and space simulators are my favorite genre too. I've been a fan since Starlancer came out in like 2000, then FreeLancer, then EVE Online consumed long 4 years of my life :-D
Then Star Citizen - a very promising project, yet one that's quite a bit overdue at this point...

Either way - I'd really love to familiarize with code of a game like this, and hopefully make something of my own! Hence asking for source code.

Here's what you need to start playing Starshatter. First, if you haven't already, create a folder C:\Games. Now download the following files.

Full Game (http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.840) 521.04 MB
Download gets interrupted. Repeatedly. Recommended Free Download Manager says this:

Until it goes back up...

you can use the gamesupdates.org mirror (http://gameupdates.org/details.php?id=5035).

EDIT: See, the thing about torrents is that it's almost impossible (it might actually be impossible!) to get a corrupt download.  Each piece of the torrent is verified as it's downloaded with the official hash, and discarded if it doesn't match.  This means if you get some corruption, it will only set your download back by maybe a few megabytes at the most.

I recommend Deluge (http://deluge-torrent.org/) for a client to get that file.  Adjust your settings as follows:

Hidden Text: Show
During install, tell it to associate itself with magnet:// links also (available in Edit -> Preferences -> Other).
Open Deluge, and go to Edit -> Preferences, and in the Plugins section, select "Blocklist", then hit ok.

Restart Deluge (not sure if completely necessary, been a bit since I set it up).
Now, go to Edit -> Preferences again, and this time you'll also have an entire section labeled "Blocklist" down at the bottom. Click that, and paste the following into the URL section:
Code: [Select]
http://john.bitsurge.net/public/biglist.p2p.gz. Set your options here, I've set mine to: Import blocklist on startup, and to check for a new list every 4 days. Hit ok.

Check Edit -> Preferences -> Network, and be sure you have "Use Random Ports" for both incoming and outgoing, and all the network extras enabled, and Encryption enabled for inbound and outbound, level set to 'Either' (Full Steam is safer but can exclude some useful peers if they don't support it, as well as slowing you down a bit more), and also, beside the drop down, make sure 'Encrypt entire stream' checked.

Managed to get the projects compiled with VS 2010, but it's failing the custom build step on 4 of the 8 projects, which is set to be:

copy /y "$(TargetPath)" "$(STARSHATTERPATH)\$(TargetFileName)"

Error   84   error MSB3073: The command "copy /y "C:\StarShatter_OpenSource_FromZip2\Starshatter\Release\Datafile.exe" "\Datafile.exe"

Error   85   error MSB3073: The command "copy /y "C:\StarShatter_OpenSource_FromZip2\Opcode\.\Release\Opcode.dll" "\Opcode.dll"

It seems that the paths generated from the environment variables are being unwrapped incorrectly, and replacing the custom build step with hardcoded absolute paths succeeds that build:
copy /y "C:\StarShatter_OpenSource_FromZip2\Starshatter\Release\Datafile.exe" "C:\StarShatter_OpenSource_FromZip2\Datafile.exe"
But - where should these files actually be copied for the solution to link further?
Title: Re: Starshatter Downloads Page

Error   84   error MSB3073: The command "copy /y "C:\StarShatter_OpenSource_FromZip2\Starshatter\Release\Datafile.exe" "\Datafile.exe"
So, I take it you haven't defined a STARSHATTERPATH environment variable.
Title: Re: Starshatter Downloads Page
Post by: ShodanSpectre on August 25, 2017, 11:04:17 am
Thanks, that was indeed the case, but I went around the environment path by just putting direct paths into the buildstep. I.e.:

copy /y "$(TargetPath)" "C:\StarShatter_OpenSource_FromZip2\Starshatter\Debug\$(TargetFileName)"

Although - is that the correct place to put the files into? In other words - which filder is the $(STARSHATTERPATH) supposed to point to?

But, even without that, I got everything to compile, but the final Starthatter_D.exe is failing to link, seems like due to nGenEx.lib. Due to lots of unresolved externals. Here are a few out of the 42 unresolved externals. Seems that most are either on key input, or windows-UI-drawing functions:

Seems like one step away from having the solution succeed! Any help where I can get those externals from? Are those WinAPI headers or what?
Title: Re: Starshatter Downloads Page
Post by: ShodanSpectre on August 26, 2017, 11:24:36 am
Alright, I finally got the whole solution to build! The "Stars" project was missing quite a few WinAPI libs in the Linked Dependencies which had to be added...
Now, how can I launch the game? It doesn't seem to have any data files, and, sure enough, first thing upon startup it complains:
> Cannot open "shatter.dat"

Are we supposed to just copy those files from pre-built (normal, retail game) installation?

Crossboneisland is hosting many of us former mod creators from Starshatter.  I will be sending him several mods not on his list for people to be able to enjoy, I encourage ANYONE who likes starshatter to visit his site and take advantage of what he has there.  There are MANY extremely talented modders who would love nothing more than to have their mods used ingame.

That's a really neat website - last time I saw SS mods it was on the old website.

By the way Achilles, did you get the files I linked to you? I realize you said you had already found your old ones, but it would be nice to know you were at least able to get hold of what I linked to you.

...If you are simply trying to make SS playable again, the carcorr mod and RSCaper's starfield fix are quite essential, and I sent both of those your way.

Also it would be nice to make a listing of available mod files. Hopefully there have been no losses. For instance are the files for the star frontier mod still here?

On eof the mods I uploaded, is Starbuck's galaxy, a re-write of the SS galaxy with about 20 additional systems, including Gamilon and Iscandar.  I created it as a stand alone mod for those who don't want to add another mod just to get it.

Just  wondering. Got SS and SS:TGS when they were first released back when and have been playing them ever since. Came across the Open Source Project just recently and downloaded the files to run TGS as Open Source. Is this "version" any better than the original? Does adding the SS_Reborn make it any better or is it even worth doing? It's a shame more people don't know about SS and SS:TGS. Everyone else in involved in
the FSO Project.
