Title: [WIP] GVC Montu
Post by: Oddgrim on November 29, 2013, 04:58:00 am
A few months ago I made this concept sketch in my art dump thread Link (http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/8759/09oe.png) : A vasudan assault cruiser and well, wanted to model it at some point.
Got started on it after the competition was over and here is how far I have gotten.

The few notable things about the turrets is : The multi part turreted fusion mortar under neath the front and the turret placement which allows for roughly the majority guns to fire on a target when approaching head on,
Right now I'm on the uvmapping stage ( roughly halfdone ) and just finished modeling the glow lights.

Beautiful! The spherical slicing of the upper hull works amazingly well! I also smiled at the "iron" bridge at the forefront, RotJ Tatooine style :)

If there was an applause emoticon, I would use it right now. Nice ship.

It's screaming "IMA RAM U ALL *****ESS!!" in my face so loud I cannot think in anything else this ship could do right now.

A beautiful design with the bite seeming just as bad as the bark. The way the turrets are laid out make it seem like an Assault Cruiser if ever there was one.

Are the four holes on the upper side of the bow just that, holes or missile launchers?

I'll now try to collect all the smiles, all of them. :p (also thanks)

Thanks, the side pods where somwhat troublesome to get right.

If there was an applause emoticon, I would use it right now. Nice ship.

Try to image these clapping together I guess :p   (that did not really work..)

It's screaming "IMA RAM U ALL *****ESS!!" in my face so loud I cannot think in anything else this ship could do right now.

Heh, and so it does. c:

Long enough to be a cruiser :p ( have not measured ut as of yet )

Wow, simply wow

Those are the commutation sub system, the final version will have it covered up by a -trans texture.

Yeah. This ship loks pretty, as usual. Still, the name could be a bit different. The Montu name looks like an error - a mistaken letter :P. Pretty.

Eh, I like Montu. Is god of war (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montu) and doesn't afraid of anything.

Post by: headdie on December 01, 2013, 07:31:16 am
I think MitoPL is referring to the fact that Montu is only 1 character different to Mentu
Title: Re: [WIP] GVC Montu
Post by: An4ximandros on December 01, 2013, 07:37:01 am
Hmm, they seem to be different spellings of the same name. :\ Bummer.

In that case I would like to recommend (Upuaut, Wep-wawet, Wepawet, Ophois) Different names of an earlier god of war, in case Oddgrim wants to keep the whole warrior theme (if he want to change the name anyway)

In the end a name is _just_ a name, mission/campaign creators are free to change it to their liking.

And since i'm back to normal, non-ship-name-creative mind state, i have to admit, Oddgrim you're right. Just i didn't thought 'bout it at that moment  :ick:.

Seriously why the hell haven't you got a job at this moment? Really, you are building your portfolio to bring up to an AAA game developer studio, right?

Please tell me that you are at least considering this.

It's not as if it would benefit me. Hell, for my sake just continue unemployed making these marvels, I won't complain! But gods man, you are really talented. You deserve a lot more than pro bono work!

Saw the updated textures. Looks great.
I've been meaning to ask how to add the wear tear look to the textures but I think I can see it now. Do you just use a multiplied metal texture from a website?

Well, its a skull now. :p

Somehow this always happens to me and I have no idea why. :p Still its a nice unintentional "easter egg" if anything.

Oh snap! My cover is blown.  :nervous:

Its just a metal texture on overlay with 50% opacity to make some grime into it.
The texture itself is not from a website, but from my own collection of photos that I have taken.

First normals and shine test, you can see for what style I am going for when observing the front.

You should really make a texturing guide if you could ever find the time to do it (Which I doubt).

It's not Oddgrim's fault; people are just really good at seeing faces (although I didn't see a face ;7). How you can consider this: -_- to be a face, and not only that, recognise its expression is quite incredible. We see ourselves everywhere in the universe, and  anthropomorphize (sp?) it.

Edit: Also, yeah, bloody great model. I miss my computer...

Jesus christ this is just a fantastically great looking model. I love the level of detail that makes it look rugged and combat-ready while completely emphasizing everything that makes a Vasudan ship Vasudan. I'd love to put these things to use in a mission!

Those cannon turrets and beam emitters are also fantastic. And is that thing on the lower front a fusion mortar turret?

It is gorgeously Vasudan and well made. First time I've seen a fully textured model on P3D. One oddity, and this may be something I did that caused it on my end, it doesn't seem to be rotating around its center in P3D for some reason.

P3D lets you set the local origin by right clicking (once), I believe. The menu on the side shows you the other controls -- it's actually really flexible! So you may have just clicked on it as it was loaded and set the view origin elsewhere.

But I reloaded the page and it still did it. Unless there's a cookie that remembers that, it should have reset the local origin.

I'm glad to see this model being worked on, I've seen it in your p3d a few times and was wondering how come it wasn't released yet. Looking forward to see it completed!

Thanks for the comments!

Yus, it is also could double for a beam turret. Or maybe a torpedo launcher.

What I like about designs like these is that I could make multiple types or versions of the ship this way, with different loadouts and/or resizing the model. One could have the fusion mortar, the other a beam turret, or torpedo launcher and so on.

Another update!

Been working on the shading of the panels and switching around on markings and general colours of the main armour panels.
Normal mapping is about 80% done mostly detailing left on the areas between stuff..
And then theres adding some wear and tear to the red markings, adding some more vasudan swearwords and rude suggestions to someones behind.   :D

Gotta give you kudos for this Oddgrim it's looking excellent . I quite like how the design feels unique compared to other Vasudan ships, yet at the same time when you look at it you can see parts that remind you of the others enough for them to go together (the front prongs reminds me of the Aten, hull scales of the Mentu, greens of the Nephthys etc). Nice one!
