Recent experiments done with modern airplanes have shown that you don't even need cockpit viewports! You could have a fighter or bomber completely rigged with an internal control nexus that is heavily armored (meaning the pilot is less likely to be injured if the ship gets slammed) and have an array of viewscreens for visual confirmation of the surrounding area. The eyepoint could be in a forward point of the ship where a cockpit would normally be, but instead put a sensor package-looking texture there so we know where the eyepoint is.
