Who knew I could do something half-decent?  I remembered looking at Raven's stuff and decided I'd take a crack at it.  These were made in GIMP with the mouse and mostly the airbrush.  The stars were made with HSV>Sparkle>Gaussan-Blur.  I'll probably improve as these are my first attempts at this.

I like that particular type of art and I suck at drawing with or without a mouse so I can appreciate what you've done. If it was high res I might have even made the second one my background

Read about light, color, values, etc... all the basic fine art stuff. Andrew Loomis's books are especially good
And a mouse won't get you far

A word of advice: using blur makes things blurry.

In other words, don't blue the entire image.

All I blurred was the stars, the rest may look blurred because I use the airbrush tool, (don't like the look of hard lines, hate seeing the stair-steps  effect of visible pixels)

I would take a very small blur brush, then go around the edges of the ships.
