That weekend looks good for me.

We've got a spare double bedroom going, plenty of floor space and sofas for sleeping bags. Obviously I'll be bunking in the master bedroom with Dekker, and the missus will be kipping in the shed.

Any likelihood of our young friend Stu coming, or indeed Dekker Jr?

Carl will be there regardless of my presence, just get me an address to send him in advance of my possible arrival.  Being able to bum one of those sofas or floor spots would be awesome.

Well, not sure about that yet.  I'm hoping it can be sort of a mini vacation, but I wouldn't want to wear out my welcome :)

I do want to be able to take a day or two to do some typical touristy stuff but I'd also like to see if any of the local girls have a thing for yanks too ;)

I'm quite happy to put people up at my place from Friday night to Sunday, overseas members included (so long as we don't end up with too many. We've managed ten or so in one go before).

After that I'd expect you all to sod off, of course.  :p

TE: you invited Wolfie yet?

TE, Dekker, Kara - confirmed as definites for that weekend (14/15 Aug)?

Just PM'd Admiral Wolfe

I'll probably kip on the sofa...

Just realized McCall, we're all going to need to know how to get to your place. PM us it some time.

Question: If I bring my PS3 and my 360 Memory Pack can I use your internet conncetion to get some DLC?

PS
Has no-one guessed where i took the thread title from yet?

Not quite yet.

Need subtle hints.

How many consoles do we need to bring?

This is beginning to sound like it could be a really INTERESTING weekend :D

Mac, you DO have a garden right?

RvB, thought it was obvious.

By the way, the general stopped by, and picked up the flag.

Post by: McCall on July 13, 2010, 04:20:03 pm
One of each console should do fine.

TE can use our broadband to get some DLC.

Yes, there is a good-sized garden out back.

The place is called Burgess Hill, and we live a couple hundred yards or so from the train station of that name. Easy to get to from Victoria, St Pancras, London Bridge etc.

Might still manage to make this if you'll take another dirty rotten foreigner. Turns out the timing is a bit bad in regards to me getting a few days off, but I'm top of the list if it turns out we can spare a man at work. It helps that I have close to two months of overtime to dispense of too :p

RvB, thought it was obvious.

By the way, the general stopped by, and picked up the flag.

Whilst Looking for Elbow grease and Headlight fluid, I presume.

Cookie to Chief. I give it to you at the BBQ

Burgess Hill, Depending on when you arrive in England, Your best bet may be to fly to Gatwick an d get a train towards Brighton from there.

I'll Probably be getting a train from London Bridge

What's a rental car cost?  Or do people not rent cars very often in England?  I'd kinda like to take a spin across the countryside myself instead of just hopping on a train, but not sure if that's feasible.

Holy crap - Burgess Hill?! I used to live in the next town North, for the first 7 years of my life (My Dad was doing his PhD then teaching at Imperial College in London).

So, wow, I used to live just North of you, McCall, in Heywards Heath.

Oh, and Chief, I couldn't quote you a price, but renting a car is something that does get done in Britain, I know when my uncle visited from Aussieland, he hired a car (So as to keep his arrival here a complete surprise)

Well howdy Ravenholme. Sounds like you moved in the opposite direction to me. I started out in the East Midlands.

Chief - you confirmed as coming yet?

Shade - yep, come along too. We've got room.

TE - I've got a few multiplayers in the lounge. Marvel Ultimate Alliance is pretty good for four-way joypad smashing.

Update from me, deciding when to make it down- friday pm or sat am.

Anyone who's also planned this far ahead please specify your preference so I can arrange a mass transit rendezvous and PM me your mobile including real name so I can text you back.

I'm off on a work "meeting" (jolly) Friday daytime near Northampton, so may be a bit late arriving in London and getting back to Da Hill On Friday. Not much, just a little. So turning up Friday night is optional but certainly available.

Saturday is a given. Hope the weather behaves.

Advise people don't worry about heading back until Sunday.

Have we got a definite set of folks coming? I'll PM my actual address so you can see exactly where to find us. Very very easy to get to.

Meeting up at London Bridge sounds like a good idea too.

Hold on hold on hold on.

The actual event was meant to be Saturday, right? I'm likely going to be a bit late back on Friday.

We can still do Friday if you'd prefer, or I'm happy for people to come down that night and have the BBQ on Saturday anyway.

Just so long as we are all agreed what happens when.

TE - no Xbox. I have my old PC behind the TV acting as a console.

Post by: McCall on August 09, 2010, 03:41:06 pm
Righto, so I'll give you a shout when I get back to London and come to meet you wherever you are near London Bridge. I shouldn't be too late.

As for what to bring, I do have a 1080p TV but I don't have any consoles. Just a trusty old GeForce 7600GT PC with a few multiplayer games and co-ops installed on it.

For sleeping arrangements, there is a spare double room, a double inflatable mattress, a three seater and a two seater. So I think we're covered there already. Would advise bringing own toothbrush as wife doesn't like sharing. If someone really wants to go in a tent, there is a lawn.

Might be a good idea to bring a towel.

Supermarket and other shops are well (WELL!) within walking distance, so I wouldn't worry about bringing too much alcohol with you. Ditto food.

My parents don't turn up until late-ish Sunday, so crashing Saturday night is also welcome (unless you've vomitted on the carpet, making the colour even worse!)

No wanking in the shower.

Might be a good idea to bring a towel.

Don't forget to bring a towel!

Quote
The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy has a few things to say on the subject of towels...

"A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value - you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand-to- hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindboggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you - daft as a bush, but very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitch hiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost". What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with."

Ok fellow HLPLondoners, I just bought my return ticket for friday and sunday. Because I bought in advance, combined with my Armed Forces discount. What would've been over forty quid if I paid on the day set me back a mere £12.80. You may achieve similar results if you have a student type card. But buy early, and save loads. Also if you've a travelcard, weekly or otherwise, make sure you present it at the window so you only pay for the journey from the border of your cards jurisdiction.

Keep an eye out for the next one T-Man. You will be welcome.

Dekker is right to bring up train tickets. They can be a total ripoff if not bought exactly right. If you have an annual travelcard for the SE region (FCC, Southern, SW trains etc), that will also net you a third off. None of us are travelling during peak time, so avoid those Anytime fares that the automated ticket machines love forcing you to buy.

If you are buying a single each way and don't have a travelcard, it's best to wait 'til I'm there to buy your ticket south. I have to have an annual ticket for work, and it lets me buy discounted tickets (a third off) for a couple of guests so long as they travel with me.

I don't know if they offer any discounts for buying in advance on the Thameslink route. I don't think so.

It looks like the cheapest way to book tickets is to buy the open return for £24 (minus any discounts you can get personally). You probably can't use my discount that way, but it works out nearly the same as a discounted single down and non-discounted back up.

Aren't trains just stupidly complicated?

As for timings, just let me know as I'll probably be the last one into town.

MacDonalds then. MacD's seem to do free wi-fi as long as you buy food there. Dont hold me to that. Someone confirm that for me.

I can pair my phone to be honest. But a forty K connection gets old REALLY fast.

Oh look, an ironic joke.

I could always show off some Dodgy assets.. . . . . .  Which I need to give the team. My glorious autonymous team.

SITUATIONAL UPDATE-

I'm bringing the Wii and enough controls to enjoy Smash Brothers Brawl. Few standard wii sporty games too.

I'm bringing two Xbox controls and an assortment of games. NO CONSOLE though due to size constraints so i'm counting on Terran Emperor to bring his. I've got Halo 3 and Modern Warfare 2 plus random other multi games. . . . Plus my profile on memory unit. Deep joy.

Not bothering with any dvds again cos of space.

No tent though so I CALL SHOTGUN on a spare room :D
