well, do what you must, i know it's a pity that specular doesn't work at present for most ATI users. but, it's only a speedbump..

so far, the SCP have done an exceptional job for bringing an old engine to modern standards. kudos guys.

i can't wait to see the test builds for the vertex shading system, however, that'll be a treat to behold.

when we add vertex shaders it's probly going to b the time to change the model format, so when that happens it's going to be a big deal, and you are going to have lots more options.

Have you tried OpenGL? Just tried it on my 9800 pro and specular *sorta* works. At least it doesn't seem as shiny as it was on my GF4 Ti4200 on D3D8, and on some ships doesn't work at all (e.g. Eos in Inferno). But its been a while since I played (just reinstalled tonight) so my memory may be letting me down.

BTW I have 3.6.5 Zpack and beta build

edit- what I mean is sometimes whole sides of a large ship will light up when I look at them from a certain angle

I have a Radeon too... and things don't shine.

I would really like things to shine; would there be a way to bypass this "Radeon" trouble-giving thingy and get the shine anyway?

I'm willing to make sacrifices...

I've looked around... I found two solutions:

1-  Use OpenGL
Doesn't work for me. All ships become white.

2- Install some older "Catalyst 4.4" driver.
I'd try that if I knew how. I thought I knew how until it didn't work...

Could anyone please help me?

Well, thanks to the latest product cycle from Radeon, the 4.4 drivers are no longer an option as the latest cards just can't use them.  If you've got an older card and can find the 4.4 drivers somewhere, you can probably install them if you uninstall the ones you are currently using first.   If it's still not working (and there are a scattering of people who haven't been able to get them working under any conditions) then you're out of luck.  There ultimately will be a fix to this, but no-one outside of the internals knows anything remotely close as to when it will be done.

there's a thingy called driver cleaner and you will find it on driverheaven that should get you rid of all that's left after driver uninstall and start from scratch...(also highly recommended if you once change from this to that GPU manufacturer... the other thing would be UPGRADE to the latest CAT version (because now they have a cute uninstaller) and then go software uninstaller and run ATI uninstall assistant (at least this is how I would translate the german word of it...) still a run of driver cleaner afterwrds wouldn't do no harm...

Who has the 4.4 drivers? Me want shiney!

I tried uninstalling my drivers and installing the 4.4 ones, but although that process went well, nothing shined afterwards.  Should I reinstall the game or something, just to make sure?... or should I just take for granted I can't get the shine?

OpenGL almost works... most ship models are all-white, but a select few, like the Pegasus, Tauret, Astaroth and that Vasudan Destroyer, whatever it's called, work. And they make me drool.

Good news!

I tried to make OpenGL work, and it worked. I rebuilt FS2 from the ground up, and after installing FS Open, I made back-ups of my Data folder every time I upgraded the ship models/textures/whatever. I realized that my shinemaps caused most ships to appear white; I removed them and installed a different set.

So I'm now playing the game, albeit with Open GL, with all the shine I want! Joy!

OGL does things differently, and shine has never died in it, AFAIK...
