Actually that's a good question, with a simple answer. Light can travel through shields, shivans use Photon Beam Cannons and Covenant ships have little hull protection.. The Covenant vessels use plasma, which all FS ships are heavily armored against.

Also, the shivans don't have energy shields for their larger warships (with the exception of the Lucifer) while all covenant ships are equipped with them. And the covenant fleet is humongous.

Hey, my point was that you can explode a ton of things in space. I mean, saying that you can't detonate a nuclear device in space is like saying you can't blow up c4 in space. We're not talking about lighting a fuse with a match. We're talking about creating an explosive release of energy not combustion. I'm pretty sure a nuclear blast doesn't need combustion as your detonating a far superior explosive material than black powder which does require combustion. As far as fuse and match goes, there's blast caps that work with electricity and so on in todays age. My other point is that the kid is stupid for saying where in space are you going to find atoms. I take it GODSBOY(flame him) doesn't even know what an atom is, and he probably just turned 11.
The other **** that's funny on page 7 of their topic is that they say that a projectile moving at the speed of light would be like a really fast needle through paper. True...depending on the size of the projectile. I know certainly if you got shot in the nuts with a 9mm they'd have a chance at them still being there as opposed to more than just desackage(a term for "only the nuts are left behind") when shot with a 50cal. in the nuts.
But on the other hand, i really do want to flame those bastards.

Sandwich is 100% right. Let them carry on with whatever they want to; it's much more fun to laugh at them from the safety of our own HLP then registering on a new board to argue for FS2 in an entirely pointless argument involving the comparison of two totally separate universes.

That's true about a lot of my posts. Well you can either lose iq points by eating paint chips, or losing it by flaming. Your choice, personally i don't like paint chips. If we did go flame them, i think we'd be getting a very charismatic reaction.
On another note. On page 11 i caught VA saying that heat can't travel through a vacuum because of lack of a medium being present. Simply not true, heat travels through space as radiation...in particular infrared radiation, not by convection(requires a medium).

So while the temperature changes in the individual atoms, overall, there's not a huge net temperature loss because only those atoms on or really close to the surface will emit IR radiation that will escape into deep space (There is no medium through which to transmit heat through a vacuume, so space is only cold based on how long it takes the medium or atmosphere around you to release all it's IR energy ).
Granted though, this really isn't my area. BW came and cleared it up on the next page. ;)
Myself and BW found that little forum way back when - and most of them do indeed know about HLP and the SCP, and what's better is that those members usually point the newbies towards them also. They also show them where they can download or buy the whole game from if they don't yet have it, and solve other's problems as best they can (answering or directing them to Kara's FAQ or these boards themselves etc)
A lot of them lurk and/or post occasionally here, and there is absolutely no reason to disregard the lot of them as flamers and/or idiots. Sure there's the occasional utter idiot such as godsboys and more recently ez_pk, but I'd say HLP proportionally has many times the number of flamers that little board does. :p
I'm slightly disappointed that peeps here are bringing up the old "universes don't mix!!!" argument though. It might be far fetched and occasionally a bit childish for the most part, but that topic has thus far been a lot of fun.
Simply put, if comparing the universes doesn't interest you, don't read the topic! (Especially considering this particular topic isn't even on the same forum :p ) - This is the stance I've held when the rare idiot bounds in with the shocking news that they will never actually fight because they don't actually exist and so we're all wasting our time and must be retarded.
Put it this way: I and I expect most of the others will stop discussing it as soon as it is no longer entertaining. (ie, when it gets all serious) Until then, it's just for fun.
Edit: On second thought, might it be better deleting this topic? Having tension (imagined or otherwise) between the FS community and other space sims is bad enough - but members of that board finding this topic that denounces them and their board as,...well....everything that they've been called here already, could only further hurt the FS community as a whole.
Besides, other than the fact that inactive topics get purged once every few weeks, the place really is just a mini-HLP anyway - with a larger influx of newbies.

The Main Forum isn't that entirely different from General Freespace; there are just certain people who tend to post almost exclusively in the Main Forum and not in General. The smaller forums, I would agree, are cliques unto themselves. It's the same with the BSG project over at Game Warden.

Actually, if you use real physics, the shivans would be pwned, because they have no beams with range greater than 30K.
The covvies are supposed to have like 1000KM weaps.
On the other hand, that's to make sure we in fighters can actually aim.
So, if we fixed the scale... (don't compare universes. This is why.)

Of course Halo's scale probably messes up itself, just like Starwar's does. (That ship ain't movin' lightspeed!)

But the scale thing is negated to some degree by the instantanous subspace jump. In the end it comes down to who has the better navigation software, and hence can pop up at a comfortable range for themselves more reliably.

Has anyone read fall of reach, or the third book, (The Flood IIRC) which shows how The MC and Sergeant Johnson get back.
It goes into detail about how the covvie weapons are just plasma blobs encased in a magnetic field. Cortana uses a focussed magnetic field to create a Plasma -beam-effect whihc effectively slices ships in half. But i reckon the colossus and four deimos could take a covvie battlegroup........(with fighter cover of course)

What I think is funny is that plasma weapons probably don't have the same power as 400 H-bombs, which is what you need to destroy a CAIN!
Soooo.... How much weaker are they? (Great, WTF is a DU? Damage Unit? OK.....) So... A perfect hit from a Fuel rod gun is weaker than a plasma grendade, a plasma grenade is.... enough to kill an elite, with shield, which sends him flying 3m up, which means... bah.
Yep, lesson learned, don't compare universes. Especially when scale is screwy, damage is in funny numbers, etc.

I don't know I've played both and I think the shivans would win. It seems like whenever you defeat them they just come back at you with something more powerful.
However covenant ships were'nt covered in great deal in halo so who knows.
