Hey guys ive had the game for awhile now its only lately ive noticed i want more out of it visually
so i found this site im going to start downloading Freespace open manually as i dont think i need freespace retail and i doubt that my parents want the interent to be running slow for the next couple of days etc
so obviously i need Freespace open to get better visuals but when i want to add mods like campaigns and such are there
readme files that i can help me put them in the right files or have i got it completely wrong and i need to be guided through
the steps any help here would be great hope its not too much of an ask!! :)

If you have FS2 retail installed simply point the online installer at the folder it's in and it will only install FS2_Open. Furthermore it does it in such a way that retail is still playable.

Ach. Six lines of text but only one sentence. Kind of hard to pick up the main points you're presenting. Please use a moment or two for structuring in the future. Or maybe I'm just too tired. Damn lectures...
But indeed, Turey's FSO Installer will only download what you want it to download. And it'll take note if you already have something, like the retail FS2, and won't download such things. Karajorma's FreeSpace FAQ has a section about using one or more mods. You might want to read it.

thanks for the help guys i downloaded it and it works but for some reason i dont have sound
im in the launcher for open i go to audio/joystick and i hit the drop down box for open alp sound device but the only option
is no sound did i do something wrong :confused: do i need to change something? hope you guys can help

just throwing this out there do i need the patches for the media vp's to get the sound back?

you need openal v1.1, it should be somewhere in the folder where you downloaded with tureys installer

i didnt use tureys installer as i didnt want all those things that came with it so i installed in manually i just played it now and noticed a few extra
problems one i crashes randomly after 3 mins and shows fs2 has encountered an error and needs to close and two whenever a missile hits instead of an
explosion its replaced with a white square on top of the sound problem :mad: although i havent ticked the boxes for the debug features on the 5.5 launcher
if that has anything to do with it is there anyway to fix these problems or do i need to start from scratch with tureys installer? i just want to download the parts i need not everything from the installer if i need to is there a way to select the things you want from the installer before it downloads them if i need to start from scratch? sorry its a lot of questions guys but i just want to get this right

1. Turey's Installer doesn't necessarily download everything. You can make it do that, but you can also just select the things you want to download, like FS2, the FSO executables and the MediaVPs.
2. Again, make sure that you've installed OpenAL and that it's the newest version (1.1).
3. Post some specs about your hardware, operating system and the command line options you've selected for FSO.

ok i might use tureys installer to downlaod again where is the open Al? ok some of my computer specs are 2.80GHz core duo processor
1 gig of ram ATI radeon HD 2600 XT and im running Windows Xp and the operating system is Dell at the moment as for command line options im not sure what your talking about
i played it again today with out the media vp's adde on and it doesn't crash so far ive only finished the first level with no media vps i probably need to re download or install to fix the problem. Where do i download the open AL from?

ok i got sound fixed now the crashes i think its download related or win rar related with the media vp's every time i try to extract it it make an error message but no error pops up i might need to download the files again thanks for the help so far Lobo got any other ideas about the media vp's

ok i got the crashes fixed i had to change the graphics from Direct 3D8 to open GL thats the only reason for it crashing so far but
shouldnt my graphics card handle that its barley 3 months old because now i have to put up with black pixel squares for sparks on damaged ships
is there any way to fix this problem?

ALWAYS use OpenGL, Direct3D is being phased out as none of the coders like coding for D3D! Future versions of FSO will only be OpenGL, you will be able to select D3D in the launcher, but the game engine will ignore that and use OpenGL anyway!
Black squares around the sparks hmmm?? Which version of FSO are using? Seems like an old one to me, and which mediavps are you using. Post a screenshot of your FreeSpace2 folder and Mediavp folder so that we can tell which files you are running and be able to direct you the correct ones. Or simply use Turey's installer in Lobo's signature to update everything the latest official releases. (and maybe one or two unofficial, i dunno, haven't used it in a while?)

As I thought, you're missing the 710 Patches. They go in your mediavps folder and you can find them here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39905.0.html).
