Caprica DVD Released. *Spoilers*
Right, so my family and I are huge BSG fans. My stepmother went out and bought Caprica yesterday and I just watched it.

Answers a lot of questions about where the Cylons got their monotheistic belief and how they came about. Not to mention where they got "By your command" from. Was a really good watch, totally not what I was expecting.

Still... I blame David Eick for this... MAJOR ****ING CLIFFHANGER. AARGH!

To consider the Earth as the only populated world in infinite space is as absurd as to assert that in an entire field of millet, only one grain will grow. - Metrodorus of Chios
I wept. Mysterious forces beyond my ken had reached into my beautiful mission and energized its pilots with inhuman bomb-firing abilities. I could only imagine the GTVA warriors giving a mighty KIAAIIIIIII shout as they worked their triggers, their biceps bulging with sinew after years of Ivan Drago-esque steroid therapy and weight training. - General Battuta

I agreed with Cobra about Caprica.  It is quite interesting and it was great!

Let's stop everyone from having to use spoiler tags by marking the thread a big spoiler instead. :)

Yeah, seen it. Thought it was very cool. The colonies appeared to be a lot more advanced than they were in BSG. I wonder if they lost that technology fighting the war or sacrificed non-military computer tech completely in order to fight the war.

In addition we've established what accent Taurons have so there's no need to not use voice acting from people who have a similar accent. :)

Re: Caprica DVD Released. *Spoilers*
Saw it awhile ago.  Thought it sucked.  Anything that starts with sex and violence in the first few minutes is always a bad sign.  The whole monotheism thing in Caprica seems like a bunch of retcon to me.  I thought that BSG established that the Cylons were given monotheism by the Final Five.  The obvious Islamic terrorism parallels are tiresome.  The teenagers are totally unwelcome.  Not one character worth giving a damn about nearly as I can see.  Frankly, I cannot forgive RDM for the ending to BSG.  Overturning established scientific facts was not cool.  It set this creationist/Divine seed tone that left a bad taste in my mouth as a person of science.

Caprica can go frak itself as well as RDM.

Re: Caprica DVD Released. *Spoilers*
Well, it didn't technically overturn any established scientific facts -- humans evolved in parallel here on Earth, remember? I did have some problems with it on other levels, however.

And no, BSG established that the Cylons gave monotheism to the Final Five, who were polytheists.

All that said, I was disappointed with Caprica as well, though neither sex nor violence are particularly bothersome if handled well. I thought the writing was subpar, there was no tension in the story, and the acting left me flat. The cinematography, while all right, lacked the naturalistic and grounded feel of BSG.

Lastly, please engage in thoughtful critiques rather than personal attack. RDM is probably a good man no matter how his creative side fairs.

Sex and violence ? Should I remind you of BSG Miniseries, with Baltar and Six having sex like 5 minutes into the movie, then Adama making a bloody mess out of Leoben ? None of this was necessary, it was just added to appeal to the general audience. In Caprica, it at least serves a purpose. "Humanity never asked itself why it deserved to survive. Well, maybe you don't." said Athena - they are trying to set up, why the Cylons believed this.

Well the facts and what you think are two different things. Ellen or Anders said, that the Final Five already found the Cylons monotheistic, and thought that this belief in One True God may be enough to stop conflicts.

Re: Caprica DVD Released. *Spoilers*
I enjoyed it overall.

Will admit, was not a fan of the rampant teen sex, but it did remind me of the very last scene in BSG 'DayBreak 2'
When Head Six and Head Baltar are walking through New York

Head Six: Commercialism, decadence, technology run amok, remind you of anything
Head Baltar: Take your pick, Kobol, Earth, the real Earth before this one, Caprica before the fall
Head Six: All of this has happened before

Its like society can reach a certain point of 'sin' before 'destiny' kicks in :)

Loved the music
Very BSG like. Especially the scene when Old Man Adama is talking to a young William Adama you can clearly make out
the song "Admiral and Commander" from BSG. Reminds you of those family moments between Lee and his father.

The original Caprica Cylon looked pretty cool

Question though

How many years away is it until the Cylons rebel?
Was that ever answered on BSG? I think it is 58 years until the fall, but thats well after the first war ended?
Think it ended 40 years ago?

Possible, just going on memory here, maybe someone can re-check and confirm

Re: Caprica DVD Released. *Spoilers*
58 years before the fall. War lasted for 12 years, then it's been over 40 before the Cylons struck again, so that's 52. That leaves about 6 years from Caprica pilot to the Cylon revolt (approximation, since we don't know exactly how long the Cylons stayed in isolation after the war, only that it was "over 40 years since anyone has ever seen a Cylon" at the beginning of the BSG mini series. So, it works.
Personally I loved the Caprica pilot, and am definitely looking forward to the series. When I first read that Graystone lost his daughter and tried to get her back as a cybernetic lifeform, I had concluded that the whole Cylon race was made as an attempt of one man to bring his daughter back, and thought that was rather weak.. I'm glad that didn't turn out to be the case - Cylons were already well under way when Zoe gets splattered in that train, her cybernetic reincarnation just adds a special touch to the whole thing. As far as I'm concerned RDM's succeeded again.

Re: Caprica DVD Released. *Spoilers*
I was a bit disappointed with the writing of the pilot, but I will most definitely continue to watch. The scenes with the V-club seemed very...perturbing to me and I felt like the monotheists and the sudden terror attack were a bit contrived.

The nun (lack of a better term...) at the Athena school is involved...she had a very nefarious look on her face toward the end.

I don't know how much longer i can last hearing the Adamas being called the Adams

Re: Caprica DVD Released. *Spoilers*
Alright, finally got around to seeing Caprica (curse having the DVD sent to home while I'm away at college). Bottom line, I liked it. The sex and violence could definitely be construed as over the top, but it's really a metaphor for the decadent lifestyle of humanity at that point. What this pilot lays out for us is that the society on Caprica has become self absorbed, frivolous, careless, and most importantly, racist (dirt eating good-for-nothing Taurons). It's an interesting premise, and I see a lot of potential for Caprica to tackle the kinds of big issues that BSG touched on, such as what it means to be human, and how society can get caught in a pattern of self-destruction. It's the kind of story telling I expect from RDM and company, and I'm of the impression that this show won't disappoint.

Now, does anyone happen to remember...this takes place before a unified Colonial government, correct? Each colony is an independent nation at this point, if I'm right. If so, apparently Caprica uses a parliamentary style government. I wonder if we'll find out more about the other colonies? Was pretty cool learning a little more about the culture of Tauron, and I hope that the show will expand on that.

Does anybody recocgnized that the V-Club looks like an (maybe the) opera house? :nervous:

And does anybody see that the scenes with humanism were held in warm colors and the scenes with cylonism were held in cold colors?
