Title: HLP Threat Down (image heavy)
Post by: redsniper on June 11, 2010, 12:57:53 am
UPDATE'D

New threat detected! (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=69862.msg1588702#msg1588702)

If you've never seen this thread before, read it. It's pretty fun if I do say so myself. Otherwise, I've put a link to the new content for your convenience.

The sinkhole thread and a certain post therein have inspired me to create a list of the top threats to HLP and the world in general. Forget what the experts tell you or what you hear on the news. This is the stuff you should be worried about. (In no particular order)

(http://i50.tinypic.com/ip1isp.jpg) Resonance Cascade Scenario (aka Large Hadron Collider)

We all know this is coming if they ever get that frakking LHC fixed. There's a Gordon Freeman look-alike working for CERN and I hear a forward thinking internet user has already mailed him a crowbar. You'd be well advised to get one yourself and prepare for unforseen consequences.

(http://i47.tinypic.com/3wobn.jpg) Anti-Spirals

A race whose every effort is spent on exterminating and containing intelligent life. They accomplish this by repeatedly giving their victims a glimmer of hope and then snatching it away until the will to fight is lost. Oh and they can also travel between dimensions with ease and alter the laws of probability.

(http://i47.tinypic.com/25rcax0.jpg) Sinkholes

I mean seriously. You're just walking down the street and this opens up underneath you. What the hell?

(http://i45.tinypic.com/3515z6c.jpg) Perpetual Motion

Violating fundamental laws of nature is just asking for trouble. You know why the Anti-Spirals are so nasty? Because they're afraid of stuff like THIS. If something scares them it should definitely scare you!

(http://i47.tinypic.com/4zuaf4.jpg) Clan Invasion

Actually compared to that other stuff, the Clanners just don't seem that worrisome. But hey, if Colbert says it, it's the truth.

So yeah, if that's a bit too much image spam let me know Administration. Otherwise I want to see you lot add on to this. Expect more from me as well (with or without pics depending on the reaction).

Stay vigilant!

Tell me the Colbert one isn't a shoop.

I pray to god it is real.

Gentlemen I fear you are not taking this thread seriously! There are myriad threats out there, untold numbers of things wanting to cause us harm and misfortune. I cannot hope to document them all myself. I need your help to maintain vigilance and protect our beloved community's safety!

Yes. His name is Brian Cox.

I have been unable to update this for a while, but that doesn't mean we are not at risk. Nay! If anything, our threats have only grown deadlier and more numerous!

(http://i48.tinypic.com/28r19ty.jpg) The Pfhor

The Pfhor are a brutal race of interstellar slavers that we'll have to watch out for in about 800 years or so. Pfhortunately we'll have some godly-smart AIs by then along with an immortal cyborg soldier who may or may not be the incarnation of war itself. Which brings us to our next threat...

(http://i50.tinypic.com/316m8vk.jpg) Durandal

One of the aformentioned godly-smart AIs. The problem with godly-smart AIs is that they have a tendency to go crazy or "rampant" as Bungie likes to say. Durandal aims to outlast the ending of the universe and is determined not to let anything get in his way, including us. So we better stay on his good side.

(http://i45.tinypic.com/3020z14.jpg) Thermodynamics*

Speaking  of the universe ending, Heat Death is worth worrying about. Sure it's a long-term problem, but it's a pretty big one. I think we ought to start finding a solution to this now rather than put if off for a billion years or so.

* I realize the illustration is more of a heat transfer thing, but hey close enough right?

It really frightens me that the author of Transcend is blinking out of existence.

We need to go away from the red place. We need to not listen to the static.

ironically, to solve heat death, we'd need to violate conservation, and violating conservation justifies the anti-spirals.

Well, a certain someone who shall remain nameless has recently regained the ability to post in blue. My people estimate a week at most before he regains the use of italics again, at which point he will have full blue italic capabilities again. I recommend an air strike before this happens. Consult Nuke on ordinance selection, and get me the President.

Long posts are too much work. So I'll be sparing you my usual literary genius. That's not to say there aren't any new threats though. Oh no! Just today I found this thing:

(http://i30.tinypic.com/2aacbbs.jpg) Cardboard Golem?

I'm not sure wtf it is, but it's definitely a threat. Watch yourselves, pilots!

I will be burning my cardboard immediately.

Alternatively, we might consider weaponizing our boxes into an HLP duplicator/transmogrifier/time machine arsenal.

THREAT THREAT THREAT

Hard Light Productions, we are confronted with a grave threat, a threat that lurks in each of your homes and attacks you where you sleep...EVERY NIGHT.

This threat is (http://www.konteaki-furniture.co.uk/images/chunky_pine_double_bed.jpg)

BEDS

That's right. According to recent research by The Karolinska Institute (http://www.scientificamerican.com/blog/post.cfm?id=left-sided-cancer-blame-your-bed-an-2010-07-02) in Sweden, our beds are nothing less than GIANT CANCER TRANSMITTERS.

For years scientists have been confounded by a mystery: why is the breast cancer rate ten percent higher on one side of the body? Can it have something to do with the fact that most people sleep on their right side?

YES IT CAN, HARD LIGHT. YES IT CAN.

This mysterious asymmetry is not present in Japan. In fact, the breast cancer rate in Japan is shockingly lower than in the Western world. Why?

Because Japan, Hard Lighters, uses futons...not box spring mattresses.

In the U.S. bed frames and box springs are made of metal, and the length of a bed is exactly half the wavelength of FM and TV transmissions that have been broadcasting since the late 1940s. In Japan most beds are not made of metal, and the TV broadcast system does not use the 87- to 108-megahertz frequency used in Western countries.

Your beds are enormous antennas, amplifying TV and FM transmissions into cancer rays...right under your sleeping bodies.

Save your children. Save yourselves. Destroy your beds.

this is probably not actually true at all but DESTROY THEM ANYWAY

Luckily, my mattress has no springs.
Its a solid block-o-foam.
...though the fact that the frame is made of metal is disconcerting D:

I never understood why people could stand sleeping on a thin piece of cloth supported by springs that could easily rupture the cloth and IMPALE YOU WHILE YOU SLEEP. A solid block of foam will never do that!

EDIT: Oh wait foam might be carcinogenic too. ****. But the spring-impalement concern stands :<

I don't think you read the article. Admittedly, it was a while back that I read it, and I don't feel like looking through it again, but the point is: those hornets are known to swarm and kill people and about 50 or so people die every year in Japan that way.

there are some reasons for that.

1. our nukes were all newbs. we didnt have 1337 nukes yet.
2. we only had a couple, and they surrendered before we could make more
3. hippies, i know they had something to do with this.

Oh come now, genocide never helped anyone... except with orcs and giants. The people of [Middle] Earth are better off without them.

Now, I too fear the giant Japanese killer-mutant hornet of doom as much as anyone else, but I see the value of their existance:

(a.) The uber-hornet is the only natural foe to the giant Japanese monster-moth, which if left without its natural enemy will obviously make a point of destroying Tokyo.

(b.) If we import the killer-doom hornet, clearly it will destroy the dreaded killer-bee of the United States and Central America. It will also destroy a natural enemy of the Dutch government in the region, old people:

Soylent Green: if someone doesn't do it, the Dutch will...
No offense to any dutchmen/women here - jokes will be jokes...

(c.) The killer-monster super hornet is also a clear solution to Australia's cane toad problem. Just import the blighter and find out what happens to their eco system then...

Fortunately, we've already been prepared for possible cow uprising by The Farside comics. There is something else we need to focus on though...

(http://i54.tinypic.com/2v8fn8w.jpg) Gliese 581g Invasion

According to a very reputable source (the Daily Mail, which I understand is infallible from what our British brethren have to say) some flashes of light were detected coming from Gliese 581g soon after its discovery. I don't know whether these were subspace signatures, RKV launches, some kind of nuclear saber rattling, or the intergalactic equivalent of giving the finger, but it's definitely a threat, and it happened 20 years ago! This means we're way behind those dirty Gliesians.

So there are two orders of business:

1. Prepare for the invasion (of Earth :shaking:)

Really, I just wanted an excuse to quote this post I saw on 4chan (a threat in its own right) on this same topic that I liked. It's regarding the suspected response to our beaming a bunch of twitter messages to the Gliesians (actually, the first stage of our psychological warfare campaign).
Quote
don't worry they probably won't be able to decode it even if they get it. At most it'll just let them know that we're here. In 40 years if we get a few more plasma burst we'll know that yes, they are there and they do want to communicate.

either that or in 300 years we'll be invaded, but by that time our gundams will block out the sun and they'll have to fight in the shade, which they'll probably be accustomed too due to their wonky tidal locked orbit.

2. Prepare for the invasion (of Janus :pimp:)

Gliese 581g (or Janus as I like to call it, owing to the tidally-locked two-faced thing going on) is far away, and it's going to take us a while to build a fleet to get there and school their extra-terrestrial hineys. Fortunately building spaceships is what we (HLP) do best and MjnMixael recently built a subspace drive, so we've got that covered. Not to mention we have about a kajillion hours logged in space combat simulators.

Ground combat will be another story. Surface gravity there is about 1.3g, so start hitting the gym. Secondly, being tidally locked, we're going to see some extreme weather there. I propose we deploy our Finnish and other high-latitude members to the night side and our more equatorial members to the day side (myself included). We'll fight our ways towards the terminator and meet up in the middle where the weather is sweet, then celebrate our victory with rivers of Bosch Beer.

.....but until then, watch yourselves! There are still many more threats out there and we can't have any of you going and getting killed before the invasion. Stay vigilant brothers!

2. Prepare for the invasion (of Janus :pimp:)

Gliese 581g (or Janus as I like to call it, owing to the tidally-locked two-faced thing going on)
It's actually nicknamed Zarmina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gliese_581_g#Discovery) :P But anyway, I'm volunteering for the invasion air force.

Brothers, brothers! Paramatma! A new threat looms....

(http://i44.tinypic.com/2ytxp91.jpg) Nano Quadrotors (Proto-manhacks)

Many of us have been following the emergence and refinement of these tiny autonomous aircraft from the frontiers of #hard-light:

Quote
[22:46] <achtung> Actually, have you guys seen this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=YQIMGV5vtd4
[22:46] <achtung> I'm amazed, and I want one.
[22:46] <achtung> No, I want twenty.
[22:47] <achtung> Nano Quadrotors
[22:47] <redsniper> it's crazy
[22:48] <@HerraTohtori> swarm
[22:48] <@HerraTohtori> that can not end well...
[22:48] <@HerraTohtori> those things in formation look freaky
[22:48] <redsniper> ffffuuuuuuuuuuu
[22:48] <achtung> Those will be weaponized.
[22:48] <achtung> I just know it.
[22:48] <@HerraTohtori> cyloooons
[22:48] <redsniper> technology is advancing TOO FAST
[22:48] <achtung> Those will fly right into your ****ing window, and boom!
[22:48] <redsniper> we are play gods!
[22:49] <@HerraTohtori> achtung: nevermind that, they will cut your face wide open
[22:49] <redsniper> manhacks!
[22:49] <dsockwell> manhacks?
[22:49] <redsniper> manhacks
[22:49] <dsockwell> hacks mentioned
[22:49] <redsniper> get your crowbars
[22:49] <redsniper> put in some batting practice
[22:50] <dsockwell> oh manhacks
[22:50] <dsockwell> got it
[22:50] <redsniper> manhacks
[22:50] <achtung> manhacks
[22:52] <achtung> You can hear the cameraman giggle when it flips.
[22:54] <SpardaSon21> ****, manhacks
[22:54] <SpardaSon21> don't bother hiding in the sewers

It is readily apparent that these will soon evolve into Combine Manhacks (http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Manhack) as seen in the future documentary video game Half-Life 2. Even now we can see how these proto-manhacks are already showing a tendency for melee combat. Below is a photo of a man desperately attempting to fend off a quadrotor swarm. It may be disturbing, but you all need to see this so that you'll know what we're up against.

Our comrade, General Battuta, has recently discovered some shocking new developments on the wilds of the internet: The quadrotors appear to be gaining a sort of swarm intelligence and have been observed creating music.

manhacks seen developing culture http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=_sUeGC-8dyk

request hlp threat down update

This is a sign of much more advanced and rapid cultural development than initially predicted. Quadrotors will clearly become a serious threat in the months to come. Make sure you still have your crowbars from the resonance cascade scenario and put in some batting practice. Remain vigilant!

Hmm, pretty impressive how they manage to keep it balanced with the robot arm deflecting at that speed. And it flies up to 10 hrs with a 2.2kg payload (in horizontal flight, that is).

But the sound, damn, it sounds like a... Japanese mega-hornet?

That's what bluetooth is for.

bluetooth is a horrible standard. radios are too damn expensive, data rates are too damn low, protocol stack outright sucks. it can go die.

Add on the laser turret from the previous bot and the robocalypse is going to be pretty funky.

So drones play music. And of course it's Also sprach Zarathustra. Because finding a less ominous piece isn't in their nature, apparently.

Also sprach Zarathustra is possibly the least ominous of the three selections... Carol of the Bells played on desk bells was unsettling, and The Star Spangled Banner played with that weird ghost guitar thing was downright creepy.

Scientists discover previously unknown species of insect with a 21cm wingspan.

How has something so large managed to avoid detection? Because it has only now decided to manifest itself in the real world having spent the rest of humanity's existence haunting your dreams (http://shanghaiist.com/2014/07/21/worlds-largest-aquatic-insect-sichuan.php)!
