Into the Dark Waters - Fleets Composition
I was fetching through various old files and I found master ship list I created for ItDW long time ago. It has complete Roaming Fleet, Heavy Fleet, BOD Fleet and and Escort Fleet along with some of the most important entries of Colony Fleet and Earther battlegroups. I guess it's a good response for all the questions about Exodus Fleet composition and numbers. I cut some secret entries but in exchange I include few important ships of Rossendarch's Fleet :P

Formating is quite rough as it's just copypaste from notepad file.

Maybe split the single codebox into several for better readibility?

Damn, didn't expect that the escort fleet has such a large number of ships. Makes you wonder how much military might the ORS lost in Sol before the Exodus.
If I agreed with you, we would both be wrong

Majority... About 250 Vitalius-class and 70 Tychicus-class frigates were ever constructed.

Re: Into the Dark Waters - Fleets Composition
Is that correct? 250 Vitalius frigates? That's a lot, and it requires astounding ship construction capabilities to deliver such a line of frigates straight out from the yards. What's the supposed time span of their development? Such a figure would be less frightening however if the Vitalius came out gradually over several decades. Also, if my estimations are correct, 250 Vitalius frigates would imply the presence of no less than 30 destroyers, right?

Re: Into the Dark Waters - Fleets Composition
Something like that. Introduction of the first Vitalius-class frigate happened after the Secession War. It's described in one of techroom entries which Su-Tehp upgraded some time ago. Vitalius was the first of the next-generation warships developed by the Syndicate.

When I estimated the numbers of warships available to factions in Exile, I wanted to put emphasis on virtually unlimited resources available to both factions. Both ORS and EFN are dozens of times larger then the most powerful contries on modern Earth. Bilions of people live in each one of them. In fact, NTF alone is several times bigger then UEF in BP continuity. With access to half of the industry of the Sol system and majority of it's mineral resources, ORS was surely capable of constructing a fleet of immense size. EFN is no different, but EFN was always more focused on capitalships so they introduced more carriers and destroyers.

Combined firepower of both factions is likely to exceed the might of EA fleet from Nostos.

Re: Into the Dark Waters - Fleets Composition
Nostos' EA however is a bit different compared to INFR1's EA, because the former didn't rule all over Sol while the latter in fact did. As a direct consequence, the scale of the resources available to either faction would vary a lot, potentially in the 1-2 orders of magnitude range.

Considering all variables involved, it does make perfect sense to see a Sol faction with massive fleets, which raises another question - are there more Vitalius frigates than cruisers in Exile's continuity?

Re: Into the Dark Waters - Fleets Composition
Vitalius is the most numerous of ORS warships. They favour their frigate-centered doctrine thanks to their capabilities of carrying fighters and lower maintenence costs. Syndicate also use cruisers, but mostly for escort and patrol duties.

EFN is different in this regard. They have much more cruisers. Total amount of cruisers used by Federation greatly exceeds the number of frigates in active service.

Re: Into the Dark Waters - Fleets Composition
This makes Exile's Sol factions and their respective fleets the most powerful factions to have ever been featured in a FreeSpace campaign. Right now, I can't think of anything else (besides the Shivans, of course) with comparable fleet sizes.

On a slightly unrelated note, the will to focus on frigates kind of matches what the Terran branch of the GTVA does in FS2, as the Deimos corvette is meant to be the "foundation of tomorrow's fleet" while no cruiser class is mass produced.

Re: Into the Dark Waters - Fleets Composition
The very problem of possible fleets size in FS and later in mods comes from the fact, that real power of GTA, PVN and later also GTVA was never truly measured. Considering the size of the most powerful navy of modern world - the US Navy, the GTVA would be capable of building hundreds if not thousands of cruisers, and possibly dozens of destroyers.

Why battles in FS are so small? Technical limitations of 1998 and 1999 and gameplay reasons.

The Sol system, including all the raw mineral supplies in Kupier Belt, Oorta Cloud and moons of gas gians has virtually unlimited resources by itself. And GTVA has about 25 of such worlds. GTA has probably something like half of this, just like PVN. Neo-Terran Front with their 3 system is several times larger then any state that ever existed on earth.

So any potential problems with insufficient mineral resources are effectively pointless, like portrayed in Sol: A History. The backstory of Prometheus in the times of FS2 is also straightforward stupid. Even rare, heavy elements which are abundant on Earth are everywhere in space, just because they sunk in young, hot and molten Earth. Such scenario is impossible in asteroid fields. I suspect that market of raw mineral resources will completely collapse on real-life Earth, when we start asteroid mining. Even gold and diamonds will become worth less then toilet paper.

Those factors probably deceived many modmakers into thinking, that GTVA is nothing more then 15 destroyers, 50 corvettes and 300 cruisers. GTVA can easily go three times the size of this and more. GTVA is effectively interstellar superpower.

So it's not that fleets in Exile are enormous, but custom fleets in many mods are ridiculously small :P . Inferno actually does good work, with EA and their countless destroyers. UEF is also not bad considering the fact, that Narayana frigates are actually almost as big as Orions.

...and the Shivans? 80 juggernauts seems to be enormous for us, but even loosing it was just regular, ordinary thursday for them. They probably never even noticed. The inactive juggs that didn't jump out were probably just expendable.

Re: Into the Dark Waters - Fleets Composition
I'll admit, when I first began editing Exile, I did have a problem with the idea of both the ORS and EFN having such large fleets. But that was tempered by the notion (and I think it was canonically mentioned somewhere in FS2) that the Sol system alone held a very large chunk of the GTA's economic base, so it wasn't too far-fetched for the Sol system to have fleets of Exile's stated sizes.

Not to mention that the Sol system's large population (several dozen billion or so) as of 2367 is not at all far-fetched since Earth's population was just over 3.8 billion when I was born in 1972 and has risen to just over twice that in only 48 years. Just think how much larger the human population would be 347 years from now in 2367 with an interstellar civilization capable of moving millions or billions of people across solar systems. Hell, a huge chunk of those billions would likely move to Mars, especially if it was terraformed to be more Earthlike with a breathable atmosphere (as Mars is in Exile's continuity; see The Martian War). Nyct's point about asteroid mining being a massive economic treasure trove also stands.

As for Nyct's notion of the Shivans' juggernaut fleet being expendable canon fodder, that makes sense as well. Seeing half of the juggernaut fleet willingly consign themselves to death-by-supernova in the Endgame cutscene certainly seems to heavily imply that the Shivans don't seem to value their own lives as much as we humans do ours. Or at the very least, the Shivans, being insectoid and/or partly hive-minded, don't have a problem with performing massive mass heroic sacrifices if it benefits the Shivan species/race/civilization as a whole. Nothing is known about Shivan civilization, but it's not outside the realm of possibility that their race could be hundreds of thousands of years old and their total population could be spread out over multiple galaxies and numbering in the trillions, if not in the quadrillions. If so, then it would be no surprise at all that the Shivans would have a humongous We Have Reserves attitude towards any hostile military encounter.

Re: Into the Dark Waters - Fleets Composition
One of the limits to the size and capabilities of FreeSpace factions and their respective fleets may be driven by the discovery of subspace, which occurred very late compared to the first major colonization efforts within the Sol system. Subspace has in fact been discovered only a few years prior to the T-V War, therefore most of the Sol colonization process occurred by "regular" means for centuries (I'm assuming a 2050-2310 timespan here). If anything this demonstrates how the Terrans left in Sol after 2335 were, clearly, the vast majority of the Terran population at the time. The colonies which got cut off almost certainly had more room for exponential growth due to the presence of entire colonizable words, but they'd still be a minority even after a couple of generations.

Speaking of the Sathanas fleets, if they're expendable, imagine how truly massive the whole Shivan fleet is. The most significant and documented Shivan losses ever seen were the Sathanes which lost power as Capella went supernova, which combined, accounted more than any other loss inflicted to Shivan fleets. Yet still, that was a major GTVA loss.

Re: Into the Dark Waters - Fleets Composition
I’m at work so I have to be brief. But it just occurred to me to ask just how much faster the Colossus would have been built if Sol’s economy had still been available to the rest of the GTVA after the Great War.

More later, after I get back from work and finish celebrating Biden’s win.

One of the limits to the size and capabilities of FreeSpace factions and their respective fleets may be driven by the discovery of subspace, which occurred very late compared to the first major colonization efforts within the Sol system. Subspace was discovered only shortly before the T-V War? I don't doubt you, Mobius, but can you point me to where this is confirmed in canon? I expect it's likely in the Subspace Techroom entry but I don't remember reading this. Can you show me the quote?

Speaking of the Sathanas fleets, if they're expendable, imagine how truly massive the whole Shivan fleet is. Yeah, the Capella supernova is a huge case of We Win Because You Didn't. If the Shivans' resources are (for all intents and purposes) nigh-infinite, then losing several dozen Sathanas juggernauts means nothing to them if they cripple most of the GTVA fleet.

Re: Into the Dark Waters - Fleets Composition
The precise moment the Terrans discovered subspace is not known, but it must be only a few decades - at most - prior to FS1. There's one entry in the FreeSpace Bible that somehow implies a discovery in the mid 2550s, but discovering something is clearly not the same as exploiting it. One modern day example is fusion reactors: we have them, they're being developed, but we're not quite to the point of mass producing energy from them.

It's therefore safe to assume, and the FS Wiki specifies that too, that a significant chunk of Sol's colonization occurred by conventional means of travel prior to the discovery of subspace.

That makes a great deal of sense in hindsight, actually. (I think) I remember Capella being mentioned as one of the most developed, prosperous, and populous of the Terran colonies. And yet its population was mentioned in FS2 as only being about 200 million+ people, which is less than 2/3 of the current population of the entire United States, to say nothing of the fact that it's also only 1/37.5 of the world's current total population of 7.5 billion (did I calculate that right?). That's a pretty small colony compared to present-day Earth. If (practical) subspace travel is such a relatively recent invention in FS1 and FS2, then it makes sense that Capella (as well as the other Terran colonies) would have such relatively small planetary populations since they didn't have a lot of time to make more babies.

Re: Into the Dark Waters - Fleets Composition
Using Capella as a reference is a bit complicated, and for two reasons I think:

1) The first is simple, the 200 million refugees figure is an information provided when the Shivan invasion reached its apex. The evacuation of Capella actually started prior to the first attack of a Sathanas in the system, and pretty much never ended since then. It may be possible and rather safe to assume that most Capellans were not included in that figure.

2) When it comes to information such as "200 million Capellan refugees" and "4 billion Vasudan victims of the Lucifer's bombardment", these figures seem adapted to the modern world, and apparently don't consider the astounding population increase trends of future times. While we have no information concerning Vasudan demography, I think it's safe to assume that the population of Vasuda Prime far exceeded 4 billion Vasudans at the time, so either most of them escaped ahead of the Lucifer's attack, or the figure provided by :v: was a clear underestimation of the population a futuristic world would feature.

Both points are very speculative anyway.
