The Dark Mod, for those who played Thief back in the day.

Not really related to space sims or space themed games in any way, but it is related to modding.

The Dark Mod is single-player a total conversion mod for Doom 3 inspired by the Looking Glass Studios stealth games Thief: The Dark Project and Thief 2: The Metal Age. It's designed to mimic the gameplay of those games and even improves upon it in some ways.

If you liked the first two Thief games you owe it to yourself to play this, as The Dark Mod probably the closest thing to a modern equivalent of the earlier Thief series there is.

No, this not some multiplayer mod inspired by the setting of Thief. No, this is not a mod simply to add stealth gameplay to Doom 3.
This is a fan-made successor to Thief designed to be as close to the gameplay original Thief as possible and improve upon it where possible.

Some missions I recommend:
-Knighton Manor
-Tears of St. Lucia
-Return to the City
-Glenham Tower
-A Score to Settle (difficult)
-The Heart of Lone Salvation (difficult)

Some missions recommended for beginners are The Crown of Penitence, The Outpost, The Parcel, and Too Late. I suggest playing at least one of those missions first even if you've played the original Thief games, as The Dark Mod is often considerably more difficult than Thief.

EDIT:

I started doing a series of "Let's Play" videos of some The Dark Mod missions.

(this was my first one, I didn't have the brightness tweaked properly and I make a mistake accidentally loading a quicksave)

in that youtube vid why are the players footsteps so loud
they appear to be about 5 times louder than the guards footsteps
and why cant he open a door at a volume any less than incredibly loud

That video is somewhat outdated, the footstep sound effects have been changed since then so they aren't quite as loud.

This video is still a bit old but is closer to the current version:

I changed the one in the original post.

Unfortunately, despite this being a TC mod, it appears you actually need Doom 3 to play it.  And I have no intention of spending $20 on Doom 3 at present.  Too bad =\
