Freespace 1 Resolution help
Hey everyone!
I just got my cousin a copy of FS1 from GOG and he has Windows 10. Its only displaying in like 640x480 or something. We tried alt+enter and 'detecting' gpu settings in vanilla launcher and all that. I have looked online but cant seem to find an answer why I cant get it full screen on his computer monitor.

Any ideas?

EDIT: We tried several compatibility modes for XP and Windows 7, and no compatibility also.

Re: Freespace 1 Resolution help
Retail FS1 only runs at 640x480 by default, so that's all he's ever going to see.  (There was some ancient registry trick to possibly get it to 1024x768, but don't ask me how that works.)  If you want a higher-resolution experience, you're going to need to go with FSPort.

Re: Freespace 1 Resolution help
FS1 only supports 640x480 resolution. The only way to play at a higher resolution is to use FS2 and the FreeSpace Port, which has numerous upgrades and enhancements.

How much of the screen is the game using? It should at least be using the full height.

Re: Freespace 1 Resolution help
It is a box about the size of 1/3rd of his screen, in the center.

Re: Freespace 1 Resolution help
So, to confirm, he's getting black bars (or something else) all around the image, including the top and bottom?

If that's the case, then can you post which graphics card he has? And if he uses an external monitor, post the brand and model number of that too. This should help us find out what settings to change to enlarge the game image.

Re: Freespace 1 Resolution help
I don't know of a registry hack to make the resolution better. There was an old hack which allowed you to use better textures though.

I do vaguely remember that it might have been possible to have better resolution using glide. But I wouldn't know how.

Re: Freespace 1 Resolution help
As mentioned, the max resolution of the game is 640x480.  But most graphics cards should have the ability to stretch the image to full screen, or at least pillarbox it.

Re: Freespace 1 Resolution help
Charismatic, you could try using nglide, and setting the control panel there to force a resolution higher than what the game supports, as well as other options, and then detect the 3dfx virtual card nGlide has set up.  (Works fine with 7 x64 and 10 x64.)
