I thought it is supported in SMF 2, but it seems that it has no effect for me.
-
I just did some testing. It is supported, though there is a problem with our current forum theme that results in resized images displaying at their normal size.
-
What to do, then?
-
As I recall, wayyy back in the day there was a problem with people making obnoxiously large or small images, so Sandwich edited the theme to prevent this. Now all images display at a fixed size.
I think the best solution would be to modify the theme to restrict image resizing within a certain range. But that's a Sandwich question, and given Sandwich's limited time currently, I would prefer to wait until he has completed his front page tasks.

I could implement this if you tell me which maximum size to use.
-
I guess there is current restriction in the code (which sadly makes images to expand to this size as well), and that'll do just fine.

-betting this comes back to bite us when everyone is on 8K monitors-

Thanks! :)
I was more worried about a minimum size, since we don't want people sneaking in pixel trackers. But let's say 8 for the minimum and 1024 for the maximum.

Done. For simplicity's sake you can only set the image width (the height is ignored).
