I found that playing escort missions in an interceptor was suicide. Loading up an Ares with Trebs was far superior to ANY interceptor even one that could do 2000m/s and had sixty five gunpoints.

In the final missions of FreeSpace 2, would you rather be flying an Ares with Trebuchets or a Perseus with an armament of your choice?

An Agias pilot doesn't seek to shoot down bombs. An Agias pilot seeks to prevent any from being launched in the first place.

What if I'd take a Perseus with Trebs? ;)

And that's the way I understand "interceptor," too. They intercept hostile fighters and bombers in the first place, and bombs when needed.

Does a fighter in space really benefit from being streamlined anyway? :doubt:

Except for minimizing its target profile from certain angles, no.

My vote's yours, shiv, but to be honest, FS mods don't have enough public support to compete with mods for newer and more popular games like Half-Life 2. Nevertheless, I like the eye-candy that you're throwing at us and since I don't know any other mods that would qualify as my 2008 favrite, my vote's yours.

If it does double duty as an atmospheric then of course it does.

Let's not hijack this thread with another one of those atmosphere vs. no atmosphere debates please.

Well we have nothing to lose and a lot to gain, anyway. So there's no harm at least trying.

One more thing, why are you using gamewarden for your forums instead of hard-light?

And

An Agias pilot doesn't seek to shoot down bombs. An Agias pilot seeks to prevent any from being launched in the first place.

A Herc-II pilot could do that as well, if power was diverted to engines, and maybe even without power diversion.

Go fly a convoy defense mission using a Perseus loaded with Trebs. Then do it using an Ares loaded with Trebs.

There is a clear winner at defending things here, and isn't the Perseus.

The HercII has ten less total capacity than the Ares, which doesn't mean an awful lot.

The Agias is just meant as an easy-to-store LR missile platform with afterburners. It launches missiles. It stays out of range. It has a few lasers in case you just really gotta shoot. Details aren't finalized yet, but I'm willing to bet it's got above average missile capacity for an interceptor and low compatibility with short-ranged missiles.

Besides, detailed new models are always nice to have.  :)

EDIT: And about Game Warden, ask Shiv. I just happen to like it because Snail and I both have silly animated avatars.

Well the clear winner isn't the Ares either, it's the Trebuchet. Take away that missile and the Perseus becomes a viable option because speed actually becomes a consideration in intercepting enemy forces. The problem with the Trebuchet is that it has such long range that typical missions make manoeuvring irrelevant because the missile will reach most anything. Take away the missile or make mission objectives farther apart and craft speed becomes a factor again.

it's the Trebuchet.

The entire point of the Agias is to carry a large load of missiles such as the Trebuchet in a faster package than the Mighty Herculean Potato Ares. Take away the hilarious sniper missile fun time and the heavy interceptor concept falls on its face.

Yes. Although you could arguably call the Ares the clear winner because it carries more Trebs. It's hard to separate loadout from flight capability -- after all, the Perseus wouldn't be much of an interceptor if it could only carry Rockeyes and Akhetons.

That Deimos looks really outdated next to the other ships. it stand to reason if they make new ships with uber beamz, they would upgrade their older ships with uber beamz, like they did with the Orion's and such.

So you should add some blue glowy beam cannons on the Deimos as well.

Well, no.

What you see in that picture is basically three design epochs, side by side. The first epoch is the Reconstruction epoch, the Deimos. The second epoch is the Post-Capella epoch, which includes the Atlantis and Barbados. The last epoch is the 'Shiny' epoch, which includes the Raynor, Hyperion, Chimera and that adorable little cruiser that Blowfish made.

By the time of Earth Defense we're just entering the Shiny epoch. There are very few Shiny ships; and hence very few uber blue beams. It really makes no sense equipping the entire fleet with the uber blue beams at this point.

So...the Bellerophon hasn't been made yet.
Ah I see. That's why they're still using the Deimos.

(Yes, I know you're not using it cause then there would be too many corvettes, but still, let me think like this lol.)

Hmm.

Since some people don't seem to know about Blowfish's adorable little mini-cruiser, here are a coupla screenies.

Anyway, the Leto is an light cruiser made for escorting convoys. Since only 24 Aeoluses were made the GTVA decided to refine the design and make it even better. The Leto is the result. It's a little over 200 meters long but it's got a pretty sadistic armament - Think of it as a kinda pocket Aeolus. It's the most common Terran cruiser, so you'll see it around quite a lot.

Kinda cute looking if you ask me though...

Looks like a cute little loaf of bread.
I assume its got tons of flak and a pair AAAfs, just like the Aeolus, from the screentshot.
