Other than FS, of course.
I am a big fan of the X-wing series, especially X-wing Alliance. I don't really know other space sims, though.
What about you?
-
Order of favouritsm,
Wing Commander
I-War
Starlancer
Freelancer
Xwing Tie-Fighter XWvsTF Alliance etc.......
Nexus
Random plop ones that just pass through my hands
-
X Wing Alliance
Independance War 2 : Edge of Chaos
Darkstar One
Freelancer
Starlancer
X Wing vs Tie Fighter
Balance of Power
Babylon 5 : I Found Her
Wing Commander IV : Price of Freedom
X3 Reunion
-
Starmaster -> Elite -> Utopia -> Warhead -> K240 -> Wing Commander -> Colony Wars -> Freespace 2 -> TBP -> X2
-
The games I have played longer than just briefly.
TIE Fighter
X-Wing
Wing Commander 2
Wing Commander Privateer
X-Wing Alliance
Independence War 2
Freelancer
-
TIE Fighter. The alpha, and the omega. If you haven't played it, you're not a space-sim fan.
-
X-Wing
TIE Fighter
X-Wing vs TIE Fighter
Wing Commander 1, 3, 4, Privateer and Privateer 2: The Darkening
Elite and Frontier: Elite 2
Hardwar
Oh, and demos for X2 and Freelancer, but never got around to buying them despite wanting to do so. Of the above list, TIE Fighter is definitely the best. There's just no competition to that masterpiece without drawing the Freespace games into the lineup.
-
all the old LucasArts one(Xwing,XWA, TIE,etc.) and freespace 1,2
-
I'll break it down thus:
I am currently playing:
X3 - The Reunion
I have recently played:
FreeSpace 2
I have once played - but not for a while:
Independence War 2
FreeSpace
Wing Commander Prophecy
Wing Commander Secret Ops
Babylon 5: I've Found Her
Freelancer
Starlancer
X-Wing Alliance
X-Wing vs Tie Fighter (with Balance of Power pack)
X-Wing
Tie Fighter
Comments:
I've not played FS2 in a while as - shame on me - I've been rather FS2'd out after a while of playing it a lot. Hence the move to X3 which has been a nice breath of fresh air... a new set of races with new weapons and places to explore etc.
Of all the space sims I've ever played, I've put most of my efforts into FreeSpace and FS2 followed by X-Wing vs Tie Fighter and X Wing Alliance. Sadly X-Wing Alliance didn't feature the customisation options of X-Wing vs Tie Fighter so I only played the campaign a couple of times and then got bored waiting for the high-detail models to come out for it (it's a shame they weren't with the game originally, as the engine is clearly capable of more than it was asked to do at the start).
FreeLancer was average and I found Starlancers graphical style and presentation to be a lot more enjoyable if shorter. To this day it has some of the nicest damage models on ships that I've ever seen, and the torpedo runs simply rawked. It succeeded in being one of the only games to capture "naval battles in space" well.
-
Does Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 2 count? Cause that is the only other one I've played. :D
-
Colony Wars series
X-Wing
X-Wing vs TIE Fighter
X-Wing Alliance
Freelance
Wing Commander series
X-1 and X-3
-
At the moment I'm not playing any space sims, but I just recently bought meself the Saitek x52 so I think that things are gonna change soon ^^
What I have played are:
X-Wing
TIE Fighter
Elite
Freespace
Freespace 2
Freelancer
Babylon 5 - I've Found Her (I progress actually)
Indepence War 2 (I need to finish this though someday)
Jumpgate
EVE (If that counts)
Wing Commander Armada and Prophecy... I think... it's been a while
And maybe some others I can't remember at the moment...
-
Incredible! I found another memebr who played with Colony Wars!
you re talking abiut space sims, not general flight simulation games...
Complete games
Starlancer
Colony Wars 1,2,3.
<a Star wars game,token for a while from a friend,I don't remembr its name(after seven years...)>
Star Trek:Invasion
Star Wars:Rebel(or Rogue)Assault II(now broken)
Demos
<Another Star Wars game,six-seven years ago>
X-Wing
Tie Fighter(I hope this is the correct name)
Most games I played were flight simulations:
Ace Combat 1(Air Combat),2,3,4,5(now waiting for the sixth epsisode!)
Eagle One:Harrier Attack
Iron Aces 2
Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 1,2,3
Played for a while:
Deadly Skies II
-
Most games I played were flight simulations:
Ace Combat 1(Air Combat),2,3,4,5(now waiting for the sixth epsisode!)
best series of air plane game, i wouldnt really call it a sim though 80someodd missles on an F-15, not realistic

My nick comes from that series
In FS2 you have unlimited shots for lasers and the opportunity to rearm yourself. In that series you have a big number of missiles...I needed to achieve my incredible amount of kills.
It's not a simultaion becuase it's for PlayStation and it's controls are semplificated,ok,but on the other hand more realistic games(I have played some of them, like F-18)do not have a story.
-
aye, i know
i noticed it in the other thread

LieutenantGeneral was the highest rank in Ace Combat 2,Mobius is the squadron of Ace Combat 4 and the protagonist of the subgame Operation Katina in Ace Combat 5.
-
Wing Commander, got started waaaay back in the day when WC2 was new. I got it when it first came out on CD (for Christmas, as I recall). I followed Wing Commander religiously up to WCIV; after IV I dropped out of it. Prophecy held no appeal for me.
Then I got X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, then TIE Fighter (the collector's edition CD-Rom), finally X-wing Alliance and X-Wing itself at the same time.
FS1+Silent Threat got picked up as a random purchase from the bargin bin at Fry's Electronics. Several years passed before I got FS2 came next, acquired through less-then-legal means :nervous:, and a year or so passed before I became an HLPerson.
I picked up Battlecruiser Millenium (:nervous:) awhile after I appeared here. After that comes Starlancer, which I had a good bit of fun with until I hit a brick wall at the Saturn ion cannon, then Freelancer.
Oh, and Asteroids. :p Can't forgot Asteroids.
-
I-War 2
X-Wing Alliance
Freelancer
Colony Wars Series
-
uh, Super Aleste & Axley on SNES last week :nervous:
Tell ya what is a good flight game, using the Apache in San Andreas. I can play that for ages, doing the "Brown Thunder" Vigilante mission.
Never played X-Wing or Tie as it happens, before my (PC) time. I imagine I could get on ebay if I have a look though
---> goes to look

I liked the Quasi-futuristic planes in Ace Combat 3.
-
other than the freespace series...
freelancer (wish it was joystick instead of mouse but still pretty neat)
wing commander series 1-4 (storyline is great)
I followed Wing Commander religiously up to WCIV; after IV I dropped out of it. Prophecy held no appeal for me.
that sums it up on how that series took a hit but the CIC nuts are still have their necks above the water.
Allegiance (multiplayer olny game and SHARP learning curve but worth at least a check mainly cause its free :D but i like it)
X-wing, Tie-fighter, X-wingVsTie, X-wing Alliance,
-
Some sort of chronological order...
X-Wing
Wing Commander 3
X-Wing vs Tie Fighter
Freespace
Freespace 2
Wing Commander 4
Tachyon
I-War 2
X-2
I don't know where my X-Wing vs Tie Fighter went and I am forever upset because of that.
[edit]
I forgot Freelancer, I don't know whre to slot it in.
-
I have played:
IWar 1 + 2
X-Wing
TIE Fighter
X-Wing Alliance
AceCombat 4, 5, Zero
An F-16 Sim (Can't think of the name, but it's fairly recent)
Freelancer
XvT Academy
I think that's all...
At the moment I'm not playing any space sims, but I just recently bought meself the Saitek x52 so I think that things are gonna change soon ^^
Indepence War 2 (I need to finish this though someday)
IWar2 seems to have issues with the X52's throttle. You can move the throttle up to 100%, but it only increases ship speed by 50%. I know this, because I have this problem. If anyone can figure out how to fix it, I would be much obliged.
But don't let that stop you from finishing it. It's a good game, well worth the time put into it.
-
I just bought HW2 off the internet. I hear that the main campaign is bad and suffers TFH syndrome (along wiht mech commander 1), but the multi-player and skrimishes more htan make up for it. Plus, I want to be able to play that New Age mod.
Other than FS and HW the only other space games I play is Freelancer.
I tried playing WC privateer gemini gold, but I didn't know what any of the controls were, or where anything was or how to do anything.
-

Play it with the keyboard only. It's better. :P Now, really, does anyone knows how to play X-Wing Alliance withouth a joystick? I have the game but no the joystick.
Let's see, recent games only:
I-War 2 (playing it right now)
FS2
Ones that I've played long, long time ago:
Babylon 5: I've Found Her (waiting for the sequel)
Freelancer
Starlancer
FreeSpace
I-War (and expansion)
Ace Combat 4 (finished EVERY single thing of this game and managed to take down Yelow Squadron at time attack in 00'15'05, HA!)
And that's it, there are some missing but I dont recall their names.

What does TFH mean? HW2's main campaig is passable but it doesnt get anywhere near of the first one. Try the Angels Fall First mod too, it's one of the best if not the best, IMO.
Does this Tachyon and X-3 are any good?
-
What does TFH mean?
My guess is Too ****ing Hard, because that's what comes to mind when I think of it
-
FS1 & FS2, starting with FS2 actually. I haven't played FS2 in a couple of months because I've been having some wierd technical problems with my computer.
Janes Fighters Anthology
Tried WC1, but it was a bit too laggy on DosBox so I couldn't really get into it.
Got about half way through Sarlancer before I couldn't get past a level. I didn't like it. I felt the mission design after a while was not too well planned, also the AI was practically non-existant. Seriously, you could wade through 10 fighters at once and not take any damage. Wingmen were useless because of said lack of AI.
Freelancer I liked a lot better. It was superior in every way to Starlancer, hands down.
-
Does this Tachyon and X-3 are any good?
Tachyon was quite fun to play. It's a nice change to play a space sim as an independent, rather than being a nameless pilot in the midst of military heirarchy.
We need something equivalent to the "Black Guard" in Freespace...those bastards added some good atmosphere to otherwise cliched missions.
-
As for X-3, I believe it's a real memory hog, lags like hell. Can't say for certain as never played, this is from what I hear! Ask CD I think he's played it and from what I gather it's a good game with some neat features (like capturing opponents ships to fly yourself). Just hungry for memory!

I absolutely love Tachyon, it's seriously awesome.
-
For me:
Independence War
Independence War: Defiance
(Both these games are jury-rigged. they're playable on my hardware, but crash after every damn mission. :()
Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos
X-Wing Alliance
TIE Fighter
Freelancer
Rogue Squadron
Homeworld
Homeworld 2 (Mainly FSNA ;))
There's another one too. It's a crappy game that I haven't touched in years. BANG! Gunship Elite.
-
FS1, ST, 2
X-Wing & Tie Fighter (I suck at XW, but somehow I own at TF)
Tachyon
Freelancer
Starlancer
Wing Commander 1-4
-
FS1, ST, FS2
X-Wing Vs Tie Fighter
X-Wing Alliance
Tachyon
Wing Commander Prophecy (which while not great was enjoyable, cept I could never get it to work with my Vodoo2. Haven't tried since)
Starshatter (really nice idea, but always left em a bit empty. Lacking atmosphere so consequently I didnt play it much.)
Have in my list of things to play
Freelancer
Tie Fighter
X-Wing
Wing Commanders on DOSBox
Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos
F/A18 Super Hornet (will be my first proper flight sim, but the mdf file seems to be corrupted.)
Got the battlecruiser on there and Allegiance too but don't think I'll ever have enough free time to get through what I have to reach them.
Too many games, too many real life distractions.
Oh, and FS2 was the Grand Daddy of them all.
-

He's right about HW2, but he's off his rocker in regards to MC1 then.
-
Homeworld 2 is about as hard as the first one, If not easier cos it robs levels barren of resources at the end of each.....
-
As for X-3, I believe it's a real memory hog, lags like hell.
This is true for one simple reason that is either impressive or annoying depending on your outlook: The entire known universe - its economy and ship movements - are computed in real time as you fly around. It's constantly changing and your actions (building a factory or destroying one for instance) reflect that.
If you've got a computer that can cope, it's quite rewarding. If not, it can be a real pain in the ass. Visually it's incredible though, and worth checking out for that "wow" factor alone.
-

You must have played a different game from me. People like to level the charge a game punishes you for doing well at games they don't like. The only one that actually merits it is HW2.
I somehow muddled through as far as the level after you pick through Bentus' remains. I'm sitting there staring at a wave of fifteen freaking Vaygar Battlecruisers. There's no way in hell to match that. The ship limits will stop you cold, even if you had the time and resources to build your own fleet of Higarran counterparts. Which you don't.
-
Well dont use Equivalents use Strike craft en-masse, HW is a game of Rock/Paper/Scissors. I dunno why i found it easy i just did, I'm playing AFF at the mo anyway :)
-

Sensible Soccer on the Amiga would ramp up the game difficulty enormously if you happened to be leading going into the closing stages of a match. So much so that I once lost a match 6-5 that I was leading 5-0 up until the 80th minute. Of course I didn't like Sensible Soccer much. It reminded me more of a pinball machine than a football game. So maybe your theory holds true.

Really? I heard the universe was essentially static when you weren't in-system, with little change if any going on in any area other than were you are.

I hear that. Scared the hell out of me first time through; led my sizable [relative to previous encounters] fleet to flank the Hypergate, and i'm suddenly faced with a freaking wall of Battlecruisers spitting 45 Trinity-cannon projectiles every few seconds, shreding any poor sod dumb enough to stray into their fire-solutions.
Safe to say, I quit out, opened up the campaign file in notepad, and *cough* 'adjusted' the difficulty by adding a sqadron of 12-ish Qwaar-Jets. Vaygr ****ers didn't know what hit 'em.
-
You can add stuff like that?
How...........for science reasons :nervous:
-
*cough cough cough* Anyone try and capture any of the battlecruisers? In HW: Cataclysym, the first time I encountered a Heavy Cruiser, I captured it. By the time I got to the mission with the Bentusi hypergate, I had a fleet of one dreadnought, three heavy cruisers, two destroyers, three or four tidaan destroyers, a lot of frigiates (both higaraan and somtaaw [no ramming frigates], but no tidaan i think) and and 3 or 4 squads of 10 Acolytes. Then the bentusi killed a whole bunch of my ships...
EDIT: and a carrier. maybe 2 i think. I forget, it was a while ago.
-
Capture had changed...the essentially nerfed the hell out of it. You get a max of four capture ships, they're frigates and not particularly tough. A Vaygr battlecruiser has eight heavy fusion missile VLS tubes. You probably won't get close enough to start the capture process.
I played the HW1 campaign once using almost entirely captured ships. The only things I couldn't take were the Raider carrier and the Kadeshi motherships. I think I took every multibeam frigate, but I fear I destroyed most of the fuel pods. I captured one only. But when the swarmers run out of fuel you can take them all. Just move one corvette near enough to the group they all rotate to face it though it's still out of range, then send in others to pick up the swarmers. They're nice little fighters except for the fuel problem.
-
O.R.B. (Off World Resource Base) good game payed $3
-
Homeworld Cataclysm was actually pretty balanced. HW2 is crazy. I barely made it past Saurum shipyard (2 gunship squads left).
-
HW2 balances the enemy forces around what fleet assets you have at the start of the mission.
The only reason I didn't face a wall of battlecruisers at the Progenitor gate was that the bulk of my fleet had been wiped out in the previous mission.
-
It supposedly balances them like that, but the actual result is unbalanced forces.
Several HW2 missions seem to have reasonably fixed enemy forces as well.
Somebody else is playing O.R.B. as well...I'm currently banging my head against the wall in the Alyssian campaign, but at least I'm getting all kinds of inspiration for new FS ships...
-
While not exactly a space sim, I've been playing a hell of a lot of Crimson Skies (PC) lately. ****ing autogyros! If you've played the Stolen Starlet mission, you'll know what I'm talking about. Gnats with machine guns!
-

Not really at the start of mission, because on the first mission, (I played the demo before this) I built a crap load of interceptors when I was supposed to be killing the drones, and when the bombers jumped in, there were about 4 or 5 squadrons of them. ( I still find it dumb that Chimera station and tanis base only had a total of 1 interceptor squad for protection)

Off topic:
If only I could model  :hopping: I would make models for all the O.R.B ships
-
Yeah, but why would you want to model the Malus stuff? :p
Aside from the carrier and DD anyways.
-
Besides Freespace 1 & 2 it's thus:
Tie Fighter (Best storyline in a Star Wars game period. Even better than KOTOR)
X-Wing Alliance
(I have the entire X-Wing series, I just don't like X-Wing and X-Wing vs. Tie as much as the above)
Starlancer
Freelancer
X: Beyond the Frontier
Independence War 2
Wing Commander Prophecy
There are probably others I just don't remember.
-

:nervous:
What the hell? Are you playing the same game as me? I beat that mission with a Vaygr battlecrusier, a higaran Battlecruiser and a handfull of strike craft as an escort!!!! Everything else was sitting back at the Mothership doing nothing!
Hard is facing 5 Vayger battlecruisers 3 destroyers 1 carrier and 1 dreadnought at once with only two battlecruisers a dreadnought, two destroyers, and a few squads. of bombers!! I don't know how I beat them...
-
*cough difficulty settings at start of campaign cough*
-
*cough difficulty settings at start of campaign cough*
There are none. :)
haha! all that time it took for you to write that multi-colored post WASTED in a matter of seconds!
-
Not really, i just drag selected and licked the colour bar at the top..... ::)
I must be thinking of CAtaclysm then............
Beast, ..... Huuungerrrrrrs.......
-
Cataclysm is very fun. I like salvaging all the cool ships.
fleet command "Worker dogpile!"
workers "yay! save some for MEEeeee!"
-
Bundle !!!!!!!
Then you send em to beastified ships and they scream in agony and nick half your fleet.
:nervous: We all make that mistake at least once.........
-
Besides FS, the X series and IW2 are the only other space sims I play.
Regarding HW2, to ease the dificulty of a mission, before you go to the next mission, all you have to do is disband all ships in your fleet, except fighters and what have you. The game is designed so that when you start a mission, the computer's fleet is made of the counter to your fleet and on larger numbers.
Regarding Cataclysm...
"WE LIVE!"
:shaking:
-
I really liked the more chariciterised (is that even a real word ?) voices of Cataclysm. Especially the Imperial "Got it. Headin' in" Unless it was a captured harvester ofcourse; which sounded stupid.
-
I liked the Cataclysm destroyers. "Put the hurt on them."
And that one mission escorting the Republican Taidanii convoy remains the most disturbing thing I think I've ever played. Some stuff has been scarier, but it really got to me that I just couldn't seem to protect the colony ships and kept listening to them die screaming despite my best efforts. I finally ended up withdrawing back to the Kuun-Lan and turning off the volume. When everything finally came for me I just killed it all.
Besides, the the Kuun-Lan is the only one of the motherships that was ever capable of defending itself. :p
-
Tachyon
