Let the 32-bit eye candy never stop! :-)
Okay, this thread needs a bit of help. What you see here is my fist serious attempt to draw planets, so there's still much room for improvements.

As you can see i have tried to match the original as much as possible, to ensure an original campaign look... just better ;)

The lower size is about normal ingame size used, it still is not more than 60% the size of my planet bitmap -- so you can use it on pretty huge sizes before the scaling even begins, not to mention it wont look as bad since its true colour. Click here if you want a full-size preview (100% -- you'll rarely get to see this in-game ;) )

Download for use in-game: Planeta1 - A gas giant

Once again, it's my first try at doing this kind of things so any comments appreciated a lot :)

Progress:

planeta1
planetb
planetc
planetd
planete
planetf
planetg
planeth

finished!

I really like it, it is about ten times better than the one that [V] made.  Great job, keep it up!

look at the original, pretty much the same there -- remember it's a gas giant so it has a huge atmosphere.

Could be my mistake too, though, so I need more comments :)

so far its 4:1

Yours is far superior...  Just try to copy the white slash a bit more from the original?  Even if you don't though, it's great.

nice, but don't put an angle on it, I believe this can be done in fred, no? Makes more difficult to line up with the star that way .

Even the original planets are inconsistant.
Some are lit from the right side, some from below, some from the left,...

i'm keeping about the same direction so it will still look right in the old missions, but by putting the angle on it I'm able to save some texture space since it fits the edge better (not that it'd make any difference :) )

you wont believe what i just found out....

Volition used a NASA pic for one of their planets... I opened it in Adobe and thought... wait... I have seen this before.... I go check my space folder and find EXACTLY THE SAME PICTURE, except with some hue and brightness alterations....

so the dak side of the planet is out of the pic? That's not a good idea, the stars will show where they shouldn't...

My only suggestion would be for the first one, which is that you swirl the atmosphere around a bit, it looks a bit unusual with straight lines. Other than that, they are both brilliant! :)

It's fine, colder gas giants have less turbulence since there's less energy from the star (and they have faster winds!).

Yes, but the lines would still curve around the pole, not go laterally across the planet :) Still, it looks perfectly good as it is :)

Ah yes, I thought you meant turbulent swirls. Didn't notice the lack of curving that should be there... otherwise it's great. :)

no the dark side is there. But it does not have a glow that takes up space. Also, AFAIK those TGAs are always alpha blended :doubt:
'Tis also an advantage though, since you dont get to see any ugly bitmap edges anymore. (or the glow going to black until the nebula is there etc)

The lines are not 100%  straight they're swirled a bit, i have indeed played around with swirling them more, but I didn't quite like the results :)

Planet C -- They used an image of Europa, one of the Jupiter moons, found the same image on some NASA pages too :)

However, none of those were high resolution so here's what i came up with:

Full Resolution

And here's the download linky: Download

As always, comments welcome :)
