Title: FSOpen question
Post by: est1895 on November 25, 2011, 09:02:14 pm
Will FSOpen work on the orignal missions of Freespace 2?  If so how? :warp:

Explain at once!
All original missions were ported, and adjusted as necessary to work with FSO (and Media VPs). There were no significant gameplay changes; that's one of the rules. If you meant the actual original mission files, they should still work, mostly. A few things, like the size of the media VPs Hecate has changed though, so might not work perfectly.

If you're not using the Media VPs, than yes, they'll work perfectly.

Yes, FSOpen will run retail missions perfectly well. That's one of the constant constraints on the development cycle of the engine : Thou Shall Not Break Retail.

The MVPs use modified retail missions, but the only changes are mostly ornamental. But nothing forces you to play with the MVPs. You can just have FS2 retail installed, plug over the FSOpen executable and launcher and play FS2 without anything else required (aside from installing OpenAL maybe).

Well, with a small caveat... If there are custom missions then there is a small chance that some flaw in the original custom designed mission might be picked up by FS Open (especially debug builds) which will result in a warning, however the missions should still work.

Well, when I said retail missions, I meant missions of the retail campaign, not missions made for FS2 retail in general. Like Wanderer said, those should work for the most part, but are unsupported.

Although it usually isn't the missions by themselves, but rather models and tables and such that cause issues.
