Title: Ancient-Shivan War, Act I voice-acting project
Post by: ImOnlyHereToAsk on February 14, 2011, 06:00:18 pm
Hi guys, I'm new here. I just have a question, why didn't the ASW makers didn't add voice acting to the game?   ( I hope I'm in the right place to ask  :nervous: ) Please no harsh replies. I know I'm noob.  :p

Very few mods have voice acting because it is extremely time and effort-consuming.

Do you know how an Ancient sounds like?
I don't.

You know for some reason, when I played through this, I superimposed "ACK ACK ACK over all the Ancient Dialog. That work?

Well, I don't think finding a look or characters for the Ancients is really hard to the people who made that mod.

Very few mods have voice acting because it is extremely time and effort-consuming.
But  ACW is really worth that effort, I mean Microsoft Sam's voice made me hate listening to the briefings, and while playing the game I really can't focus on playing while reading the dialog.   :nono:

Feel free to start a voice acting effort yourself, then; that's how I got involved in Blue Planet.

Then disable Microsoft Sam und read the briefings by yourself.^^

But it's not just about finding actors. It's about
- finding actors
- making sure each role is filled with the best possible candidate
- making sure every actor does his/her part
- finding new actors if old ones bail out
- normalizing all the voice files
- making sure all dialogue lines are spoken
- KEEPING EVERYTHING TOGETHER.

If ASW was gonna include voice-acting, we'd probably still be waiting for the release.

Sadly.you're right. I was just thinking if they used softwares like natural reader or something, better then Microsoft Sam, and it has many voices and options. I'm not saying I know more than the people who made the amazing mod. I was just wondering.  :(

Seriously, you could pull it off yourself. I got Blue Planet voice acted with a bit of help from the project leader and Goob, you could probably pull it off for ASW.

Step 1: get Audacity!

Obviously I didn't VA the whole thing myself, but I recruited actors, handed out scripts, collected the lines and got it done, and Blue Planet turned out pretty well (you can judge the voice acting for yourself if you've played it.)

I don't think finding the voice-actors is really hard for me, as you can tell I'm not a moder or anything, I'm just a fan. So I'm not sure how to do it.  I think I saw bluePlanet's game play on YouTube, British voice acting right?  -Sorry for my English I'm not a native English Speaker-

The voice actors came from all over; the trick is recruiting them on boards like Voice Acting Club and Voice Acting Alliance.

Voice files need to be saved to (yourmod)/data/voice/ and then either /special/, /briefing/, /cb/, a couple others I forget. Voice files should be in .ogg format. Use the events editor in FRED to associate a message with a voice file.

That's really just about it, here's a step by step:

1. Take voice files in .ogg format (you can open things and save them as .ogg in Audacity)
2. Name them by whatever scheme makes it easy for you to organize them
3. Place briefing files in [yourmod]/data/voice/briefing, CB files in /data/voice/CB, in-mission files in /data/voice/special, debrief files in /data/voice/debriefing
4. Open a mission in FRED, go into the events editor, select a message, look at the 'sound file' field under the message editor on the right side of the events editor, hit 'browse' and select the voice file that matches the message
5. Save the mission

Oh never mind Mr, I'll just learn it from the "Help section" thank you very much.

Use the FRED executables in your FreeSpace 2 folder. If you can't find a mission you want to open (say ASW), you may need to extract it from the VPs using VPView or Maja, which are free online.

I downloaded VPview, opened the missions in FRED2 it only showed me one green dot in the center (GTF-Ulysses).      :sigh:

You're on a blank mission file - you need to open the ASW missions.

You also need to set ASW1 as your active mod in the launcher. And you may want to check "Show ship models" in the "View" menu.

I double clicked on ASW missions, all of them lead me to blank mission file.

I did that as well, nothing new.

Once you're in FRED, please go to the 'open' dialogue and select one of the ASW missions - these should be .fs2 files.

I'm not sure if what i did was right, I extracted the mission to "dir" to my desktop, opened it with FRED, it gave a message saying 'Unable to read file'  I also tried opening the mission itself by double clicking on it, it loaded the blank page. =|

Hrm. What was the name of the mission, and what is the file suffix (i.e. .doc, .fs2, whatever) on it? Try moving it to /FreeSpace2/ASW/data/missions

Oh yeah, that... That's a known issue, right?
In order to edit a mission, you need to open FRED first, then File -> Open, select your mission. Just double-clicking a mission file in Explorer or using Open With will indeed give you a blank mission file.

"Realm the guardians" The first mission, and its suffix is .fs2 and it was already there. Btw 'Unable to load file' not 'Unable to read file' -my bad-.

Idk whether I'm allowed to post pictures on here so I only put links, I'm already annoying enough by my 'Noobish questions.
So this what happens exactly, I go to the file, I double click it, it leads me to the blank mission file.

You need to extract the file from the VPs using the 'extract' command.

Are you launching a 3.6.12 FRED executable with ASW selected as your mod in the launcher?

You cannot use FRED.exe, you must use a 3.6.12 version.

General Batuta, just a few questions, once I'm done doing the voice acting and converting it into .ogg format how do I put it and the missions back in decent manager  VPview? And how do I know who is gonna be saying the sentence in FRED's events editor? And anything else I need to do after that?  :blah:

Split this thing.

but why
Because release thread for mod release, voice-acting project thread for voice-acting project.

once I'm done doing the voice acting and converting it into .ogg format how do I put it and the missions back in decent manager  VPview?
You don't. VPView is a viewer; you can only open and extract .vp files with it. For creating new .vp files you could use Maja. I've used it succesfully. Basically start Maja, drag the \data\ directory containing your voice (and mission?) files into it, export into .vp, boom, that's it. And yes, create a new .vp file for your modifications. Don't try to tamper with existing .vp files.

where can I find this Maja thing?
http://wmc.freespacemods.net/repository/

Quote
and do I have to organize the files I add to Maja the way the were on VPview?
Well, every .vp file must contain a \data\ folder and one or  more subfolders under it. In this case, it should be \data\voice\ and some subfolders there. Much in the same way as during the construction phase you should have your  .ogg files under \freespace2\asw\data\voice\something, or \freespace2\mymod\data\voice\something. If getting the voices requires you to tamper with mission files, they must be in \data\missions\ .

Quote
and Do I have to extract all the files from VPview and put them back in Maja?
Only those that you are going to edit. And the voice files must of course be included since they didn't exist in the ASW release.
Cook up a .vp with your modified/new assets, name it cleverly (like 00_ASW_Voice.vp) and release. People can then  punch it into their \asw\ folder, FSO will  read it, it will see voice files and will use them, (possiby) it will see misssion files and will use those instead of the ones in the original ASW .vp files.

So yeah, you don't need to extract and repackage everything. That would be stupid and would make people download redundant data for no gain.

For starters, DON'T put your stuff in a VP file yet. The game doesn't need them; you should only pack stuff in a VP when you do a public release.

Just put your edited missions in ASW1\data\missions (make sure the missions are named the same as the originals) and your voice files in ASW1\data\voice\<something>; look in stu_fs2.vp for the correct voice file structure.

Dude, why are you putting stuff into Maja?

1. Extract the mission to ASW/data/missions
2. Use the events editor to associate a voice file with a message
3. Play the mission

Yeah, umm, sorry if I spoke with a misleading manner. .vp files are sort of a handy release format. Once you've got everything working and want to release a bunch of files to other users, it is convenient to pack them into a .vp, or several .vps which the end-users can then use with ease. When you're still modding, keep your stuff in \freespace2\somemod\data\ .

If you get stuff complete and cannot cook up a .vp, upload your files somewhere. There are many people here who can create .vp files with ease.
