The thing I never liked about the X games was the whole insistence on factory building and micromanaging stuff like supply lines etc. If it's a game where you can buy an upgrade ships and fly them from the first person perspective in an open ended universe, give me a good plot and a universe that doesn't feel like flying in a bunch of interconnected boxes. I did play through both x1 and x2 but I really don't feel like making the huge time investment it takes again with later sequels. Guess I just find the whole empire building aspect a bit of a pita. Just give me a good properly executed plot with side missions, good game mechanics, proper VA and a universe that feels vast.
X3 TC is better in practily every single aspect compared to X1&2...except for story presentation. No cutsceens and stuff...
But it does have multiple plots that you can complete, the managing is far easier, with aditional scripts and enhancements.
You can connect stations into complexes, you have Logistic Agents and Sector/Universe Traders, Wing Managment and loads of scripts that make everything easier and faster. Various jobs can be seen in the Sector Map, and there's a greater variety of them, plus they cna pay nicely, so you cna earn quite a lot of money wihout having factories. Escort missions alone can net you 100,000 - 1,000000 credits (depending on difficulty).
Also a lot of purdy ships to try out. The only thing that really irks me in X3TC is the way the turrets are coded...very limiting when it comes to starship designing for modders.
Other than that, I'd reccomed you try it out..And if you dont have patience..there's always cheats to create a few station, fill their holds and jsut wait for hte money to come rolling in.
