Progress at long last!
>03/08/2010  |  BlackDove (http://ce.hard-light.net/bwo/team.php)

Recruitment drive has proved quite the success so far, and some of our new talented artists have finalized many of the assets, as well as being hard at work on ones not yet finalized.

We will be showing off some of this progress soon.

Stay tuned.

Glad to notice that the recruitment thread is turning out to be useful! :D

Well, he wants the UVmapaper, who didn't join BWO yet, to help INF once he's finished the work on BWO.
So you can play BWO and INF, which aren't out yet, on a PC you haven't bought yet.  :P

I don't mind sharing at all personally, as long as he\she could manage 2 projects with a good leverage. My ideal situation would be to have the team enjoy working together  for future projects (that wouldn't take a decade to complete :D )

Not a bad idea. Maybe the SCP and EA/JC may share a few assets, and that'd help both projects. :)

A "dedicated UVW mapper"? I see how this can seem a reasonable request to someone not in the know. However, you'll be hard pressed to find someone who is willing to just UVW other people's models. There are several reasons for this, most importantly:
1) Modelers who can't UVW tend to produce poorer models, on average. This is due to the fact that they don't really understand how to set up the mesh so it can be mapped properly. It's also due to the fact that people who can't UVW aren't by definition very experienced cg artists and their models usually won't be quite as good. So a "dedicated UVW mapper" would be a better cg artist who's forced to constantly fix up less experienced modeler's problematic meshes. Meshes he could have done from scratch himself better. When doing this too often frustration will set in. Believe me, I've been there :)
Also last but not least, 2) Just UVW-ing would be boring.

What you guys want is a dedicated modeler who can UVW map and, if possible, texture as well. Even if that guy will just spend most of his time working on other people's stuff at least he'll be able to fix them as needed. The reason I'm saying this? I think you'll have better luck asking for a modeler and then requiring he be able to UVW map as well, then advertising for a dedicated UVW mapper. Most CGI artists will just dismiss that as boring and keep on walking.

At any rate, best of luck to you guys.

Not a bad idea. Maybe the SCP and EA/JC may share a few assets, and that'd help both projects. :)

I only mentioned staff personally. The assets are tricky subject because the reason BWO is taking its eternity is because we want our assets to be unique\exclusive until release. If that weren't the case, we would've replaced them with community available ships.

But all in all, this sort of thing isn't really up to me. This kind of "negotiations" are Blackdove's territory, and I fear I may be stepping on his toes already :)

There's some merit\truth in what you posted, however I'd like to bring out some comments.

I also find UVmapping somewhat boring, but believe it or not, in the past, in real life, I've actually worked with people who enjoyed UVmapping. Actually, it was almost their only function in the development pipeline.
So I don't think its such an unreasonable request to advertise for a dedicated UVmapper (I agree it may be next to impossible to find one though, but doesn't hurt to ask :P )

I actually think that advertising for a modeler who can UVmap, and then put him to work on UVmapping already existing models would be the most unfair (we actually did that, but we were 100% transparent about it with the people involved. But even so, its aparent that it generates a kind of "morale decline" on those members, such that their next tasks will involve the modelling and then UVmapping an asset from scratch).

When all is said and done, even if we don't get that "dedicated UVmapper", things wil get done. They will take more time though. Currently we have 3 capital ships and 2 Fighters that are fully modeled, but in need of UV's. Having someone who would focus on the UV's frees the other modelers to work on the other stuff that hasn't even started. :)

Post by: newman on August 19, 2010, 09:02:07 am
Well, it comes down to preferences and organization. Thought you guys might have an easier time recruiting for a modeler/mapper then just a uvw mapper. As for people who enjoy uvw mapping, I actually know what you mean - on some models I've actually found it relaxing. It depends on the mood and ship you're doing, only I haven't found many people who share that sentiment. Most have an inexplicable hatred for the process, hatred that I personally never understood - it is, after all, a somewhat easy part of the whole progress.
Anyway, best of luck to you guys. Wish I could lend a hand but between Diaspora and RL I don't have much time left.
Title: Re: Yay! Progress!
Post by: BlackDove on August 19, 2010, 02:37:27 pm
As far as Mobius' point is concerned, there's not much chance of sharing models because what we need is very specific (we don't have models for the sake of models, and generally, they all have to conform to a specific architecture to fit within the greater context) meaning we don't really need what others may have, and in reverse, we want to keep our models close to the vest, because they're original and crafted specifically for the purposes they're put to in BlackWater. So unfortunately, while the idea is perfectly sound, it's not feasible.

As far as the UV Mappers are concerned, Raven was making an offhand remark which would improve the efficiency of the process we're currently in. I fully understand and agree with your sentiment newman, in fact, if there ever were this mythical UVMapping/modeling/texturing beast, and they did apply to work on BWO, it is a given we would welcome them to work on the other models (should they want to) as there is still plenty to be done. However at this moment, a UVMapper would be especially welcome because they would expedite the "big picture" process, enriching the general flow. Raven already went into how and why in greater detail.

At the end of the day, members of the community will either decide they want to help and bring this campaign to release, or they won't. So far, the response has exceeded my personal expectations and I am very happy with all the new and potential crew members that have come aboard to work on the project. Maybe if you find some time in the future newman, you can give me a shout and we can find something relaxing for you to do :)

Uh, while BWO looks awesome (still) and I personally am very excited for it, there is a great deal of other talent on HLP working on a variety of interesting things.

LoL. When I played the demo once a long, long, long, LONG time ago, I didn't even have SCP back then. That was back in 2006 I think. Even before I created my StormFront mod.

I am not totally hot for this mod, though I am still looking forward to see it released and I'm sure it will be released when the time is right. Hell, even Duke Nukem Forever made it to the counter. Never give up hope.

Much better to release in episodes then one giant campaign when there is such a shortage of time and support.
