well, I figured I'll post it here, as most people don't know we moved over here...
keeping with my tradition, I'm making these public, so post feedback and enjoy :)
there are 4 shockwaves in the pack, fiery orange and the classic blue, 2D versions come at a 1024x1024 rez, while the 3D versions at 512x512(the way its rendered they appear same rez as the 2D ones)
http://www.mediafire.com/?z4uhbnyvxfnz3a3
*to get these working in-game
first, choose a color :P
for 2D shockwaves drop the appropriate files(shockwave01) into folder: mediavps_3612/data/effects
I forgot to add the EFF file, so grab it here or create it yourself, drop it into the same folder as well:
http://www.mediafire.com/?7j94tr9t95lbmq3
for 3D shockwaves, drop the appropriate files(shockwave3D-glow) into folder : mediavps_3612/data/maps
the EFF file should be the same, just rename it to shockwave3D-glow.eff, place it also in the same folder.
I figured some screenshots would help

Downloading now.
-
Coolio.
-
I hate to be the n00b, but how do we get these working in game? :(
-
just drop them in <yourmod>/data/effects, and change the tables to use that shockwave.
EDIT: actually, from the way they're named you just need to drop them into effects.
-
Very smexy.

All of them? Or just one? :embarrassed:
-
Niiiiice. Now to make these bad boys standard kit...
-
I updated the first post for anyone who can't figure out how to get them to work.
also note people, that these versions are in TGA uncompressed format, so I'm sorry in advance for anyone who it may kill his framerate
-
I tried the orange 3d version, I quite like how it looks but it feels rather choppy to me.
The one I've been using all this time (I think it was dabrain who made it?) is 159 frames (and there are version with even more frames than that). The extra frames definitely gives it a more smooth overal feeling.
-
when you consider most of the smaller shockwaves are very fast, 98 frames played over a split second can't be choppy, 98 frames played at 30 fps should last for a perfectly smooth shockwave that can last a bit more than 3 seconds, thats a very long time to a shockwave...
try converting it to DDS, it probably a framerate thing
-
My framerate is a constant 60 frames. My pc can handle a few .tga's just fine.
It's really noticable when bigger ship explode, the large slow expanding ones, those that are more then just 3 seconds on your screen. Which also happen to be the ones you get the best look at. (Since they tend to be filling your whole screen)
-
Well feel free to modify the EFF and increase the FPS :/
-

Even though we explained to you on irc about your fail, you still posted this? :p
-
What's the fail about ?
-
I assume Spoon is referring to the fact that the shockwaves don't render according to the EFF file, but according to the shockwave speed that is set in the ships.tbl.
so as Spoon pointed out, on REALLY big and slow moving shockwaves, you will be able to see the individual frames, and not a perfectly smooth transition... changing the EFF won't do a thing about that, I'll need to recreate the effect itself with more frames in it(won't happen anytime soon)
-
Shockwave speed on each ship and weapon should be adapted to shockwave effect, not the other way around. Current mediavps shockwave speeds are optimized for the mediavps shockwave, so it's natural other shockwaves won't look as good if tables aren't edited accordingly.
In other news, here's black and white version of the ED shockwave. Blue and orange colored shockwaves look purdy, but real shockwaves don't have color.

Tga and dds included.

And why that ? Oh, and your black and white shockwaves look just wrong for some reason.

Real shockwaves don't exist in space. In atmosphere they would definitely have a color. If they did exist in space, as shells of excited plasma, they would also definitely have color based on temperature and composition.
-
Aah what a treat! The ED team is cool. Works perfectly and looks nice. I used the 2D shockwaves.
I like fury's choice of color. Looks more realistic to me, even though it might not objectively be the case. I'm so accustomed to living in atmosphere.

I am going to invent the term 'Psychological Realism' to adequately describe this phenomenon of the human condition.
-
Edit: Bah, can't read apparently.
Nighteyes, could you upload 3D shockwaves in 1024^2 regardless of what you said in your first post, pretty please?
-
sorry... the 2D version was made at 1024, and the 3D one is made from it, its a 1/4 of the 2D one... I tried making it higher rez than that, but my poor laptop rendered it out the whole night, and any kind of editing on it was so slow I couldn't bare it... so these are the shockwaves we shall have for the time being... :(
-
Man, these look awesome :eek2: Remind me a lot of the cool shockwaves from WCP, only that yours are much more prettier and sharper :)
-
These are great! Keep it up Nighteyes!

That's too bad. In 3.6.12 MV_Advanced both shockwaves are in 1024^2 DXT1 because it provides best compromise between quality and memory usage. In lower resolution there can be noticeable pixellation larger the generated shockwave is.
-
I placed all the files into mymod/data/effects, but it still displays the normal MVP shockwave. Does the EFF file go to effects/ and is it INDEED only 35 bytes?

If you are using the 3D shockwaves, the files are going in mymod/data/maps... I made the same mistake. I read the first post too fast :doubt:
But if you are using the 2d ones...
-
I'm using the 2D one.
-
I just tried myself the 2D for testing, and I had the same problem.
Then I de-activate the "3D shockwave" flag in the launcher and it just work fine. Maybe you have it checked ?
-
Yeah, right. It works fine now. Thanks, Satellight.
-
My pleasure
BTW, I just tried the white shockwaves by Fury, and I found them awesome !

I still prefer the blue versions :D

Well put, as I too have experienced that particular phenomenon.
-
Reality is unrealistic- don't make me link to tvtropes :P
-
I can't get the 3d ones to work. The EFF file is in there renamed to shockwave3D-glow.eff, I've got the files in mediavps_3612/data/maps...oddly enough 2d works fine.
EDIT: I'm a huge ****ing liar, they work fine, thankyou so much! :)
-
The blue version looks so cool!
Awesome! :D
-
Has um, somebody already converted the 2D blue shockwaves to DDS yet? I'd like a copy if that's the case >.> <.<
-
Can I make a request for pink shockwaves? ;7
-
So I did a mash up of the orange and the white 2d shock waves and I think it looks pretty cool. I used orange for the first 60 frames and then white for the rest. Kind of makes the shock wave look like it's being lit by the flash point.

Can you share it?
-
All I did was use files that are available here from this thread but ok here you go.
http://www.mediafire.com/file/wdoi42b777dh3m8/whitenorangeSW.rar (http://www.mediafire.com/file/wdoi42b777dh3m8/whitenorangeSW.rar)
-
I did all rigt but it didn't work.
Problem solved.
-
Can you upload the source?
-
i coulden't put the shockwave the work partialy :( i'm such a noob. how should i put the files?
-
What more is there to say, than what's in the first post?
The .tga files from the 2D folder and the "shockwave01.eff" file belong into "...\mediavp_3612\data\effects"
The .tga files from the 3D folder go into the "...mediavp_3612\data\maps".
Which ones are used ingame, depends on the settings you made in your launcher ("graphics->enable 3D shockwaves").
-
could someone re-upload files? links are dead
-
Do anyone have these files ? I would be very grateful :)
-
Dead link.
-
Reuploaded to a more permanent site... (http://www.ciinet.org/kevin/myimages/others/Nighteyes shockwaves.rar)
-
Thank you for reuploading but it's still missing the EFF file... Could somebody please reupload that?
EDIT: If I wanted these shockwaves to work with only one of the mods I have installed, could I for example put the files in <mod folder>/data/effects instead of mediavps_3612/data/effects ?
-
Yes.
-
Anyone have the EFF file for this? I am very new to this stuff and don't know if there is another source or if/how some other file can be used or modified to work for this.
thanks!
-
here are the specficiatons for the eff file format:
http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/EFF#ANI
so for shockwave01, create a textfile in the same directory as the frames named shockwave01.eff with the contents:
$Type: tga
$Frames: 98 (remember numbering starts at 0)
$FPS: 30 (or whatever)
