Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?
A laptop, it would seem. Some googling revealed that your particular line of graphics card has had rather poor OpenGL support and if the latest drivers from the laptop manufacturer didn't help, things really suck for that particular laptop model. There are a few options I can think of:
1) Buy a new computer.
2) Take your chances with Omega drivers.
3) Try installing the latest possible (or at least new enough) AMD gpu drivers with Mobility Modder.

To finish this topic off;
Just downloaded newest catalyst thingy from amd and things are working. At least Derelict is loading via the launcher so i'm gonna assume the rest will work as well.

Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?
Hello, I've been trying to run the automated installer:

http://scp.indiegames.us/bnr_installer.php

I would like to play the Freespace 1 campaign before I play the sequel. However, this automated installer (when I run it) says that it can't download the FSport folder or file.

Is the above link associated with this website or is there a more current automated installer?

Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?
Try using one of the other guides such as this one; the auto-installer is currently borked.  Make sure you get the MediaVPs if at all possible (yes it tells you how in the above link).

EDIT: Oh, and to play FS1 first, you must download and use the FSPort mod (the above link tells you how to install mods; get the FSPort mod here

And, :welcome:

EDIT2: I didn't mention this, but of course, if you are having any difficulties, please let us know and we'll gladly help you out!  :)

Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?
Hello,

Sorry for my english, it is not my native language :).

I have a quick question regarding graphics performance. I have FSO inf. 3.6.13r. + blue planet and i recently installed shadows from valhadil topic, and i m experiencing very severe fps drops from 80 fps to like 8-12 fps in missions. I had no fps problems before I intalled shadows patch.
And my question is this; is my notebook graphics too weak or what? Ive got Mobility Radeon 5650 1gb, 4 gb mem. + Icore M330, with Win7 64. Is that too weak? Or maybe i missed a patch or some tweaking adjustment?

Thx for help.

:welcome:

The shadows feature is still very much a work-in-progress, and I don't think Valathil has completed all of the optimizations he has planned for it.  Mobile graphics cards do tend to be weaker than their desktop versions, but you do have a dedicated card as opposed to an integrated chip, so that's a big plus.  Hopefully as the feature is further developed, you'll be able to enable them and still get an acceptable framerate. :)

Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?
unclejoe,

Do try upgrading your graphics drivers to the latest version, sometimes that helps with graphics performance issues.  If you have a Mobility Radeon HD 5650, the latest drivers for 7 64-bit can be found on the ATI AMD site here.  (as of today's date, latest is version 12.1, released January 25, 2012)

Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?
Your framerate is capped at 60 because of vsync, a feature that provides a much smoother playing experience by synchronising your framerate with your screen's refresh frequency. You can turn it off in the launcher under the performance section, but it'll result in frame-splitting and instability in some situations.

Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?
Game Speed -> "Disable vertical sync". Also check your GPU driver control panel that you aren't forcing v-sync from there.

Also, you could have included both things in a single post instead of double-posting.

Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?
I too am having a similar issue to Ariel, not the need for over 60 fps but the 3d shockwaves.
I do have them enabled in the launcher and I recently attempted to install one of Nighteye's Shockwaves, putting the files in question in mediavps_3612/data/effects folder and mod/data/effect to no avail. Is there any other additional download I may have missed that is required?

Also, without Nighteye's the 3d shockwave still doesn't work.

Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?
I've recently caught on to the fact that there are mods for FS2 so I installed the game from GOG. I'm new to modding games so I read up the thread which gave very clear instructions. Everything was going well, or so it seemed when I tried to launch the game. For some reason, I'm asked to insert CD 2. Obviously something went haywire so I've no idea what I've done wrong. Can someone help? Thanks.

It would be helpful - and might possibly make it easier to help you - if you described exactly what you did. Which exactly FS2 file did you open and so on.

Are you trying to run retail (from GOG.com) FreeSpace files or those of the FreeSpace Open?

If it is GOG.com exe then

Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?
It's Free Space Open. I made several searches and made  series of jumps and found two guides from here (I lost them again somehow, I'll have to look again). The first one didn't make any sense to me, I spent hours trying to make the mod to work. I postpone it to another day, found the second guide which is very clear. That was when I realized the first guide assumed the person reading it, already knew all about the files. Hence, I was trying to do something I didn't understand and it was frustrating.

The second guide correctly assume the person is an idiot.  :D Which is true. So it went A, B, C.  I followed the steps, installed FS2 at C:/games/FS2 and not to put it at the (x86) directory, shift files, etc, etc. And it's called FSO. I made the adjustment to the launcher, directing it to the MOD (I was trying for Blue Planet) and an error message popped up. I read the steps again; it seemed I did everything as stated. So I went to look at the files, poking at a few and then the game launched (I hit the file fs2_open_3_7_0) but it asked me for CD#2 at the main menu.

I'm a total noob, I know.

Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?
Do you have a CD/DVD/Whatnots disk drive(s)? If you have then make sure it/they has/have nothing in it/them and try again. Other thing you should try is to create fs_open.log file as described in http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,56279.0.html & http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,56279.msg1180359.html#msg1180359 (for instructions as to how to get it and how to post it).

I'll take a look at the code and check why that message is (still) being sent.
