Title: So I just updated my FSO install for BP Act 3...
Post by: MP-Ryan on January 08, 2013, 01:04:37 am
...and I need the appropriate launcher flags for graphical/FSO features.  And I don't have my old list.

Can someone give me a copy/paste of theirs?

This is pretty dark but it's what I roll with right now:

-bloom_intensity 25 -ambient_factor 100 -no_emissive_light -ogl_spec 30 -spec_exp 5.5 -spec_point 0.3 -spec_static 0.4 -spec_tube 0.2

Turn off vsync, make sure 3d ship and weapon selection are on, you should be ready to rock. Oh and disable motion debris. And if you've got it, turn on FXAA, post processing, and soft particles.

Turn off vsync
Or don't. I heard there have been issues with ATI cards and vsync recently, but otherwise, there are no specific reasons to do it, matter of taste.

Otherwise, don't hesitate to crank up ambient lighting all the way to 180-200-ish in some of the darkest missions if you have trouble seeing ships. Again, matter of taste.

Keep in mind, like said on the release post, that -spec_point controls the intensity of glowpoint lighting (among many other things).

If you think shadows are slowing you down, you can change shadow quality with -shadow_quality 0-2, 0 being no shadows.

Enjoy !

Thanks a bunch "tutta! However, why disable motion debris? Wouldn't that reduce graphical awesomeness?

That is a very subjective topic.

Motion debris are the small lowres rock-looking spirites that pass by your fighter when you move. Their lowresness arguably distracts from the rest of the visual awesomeness. Try with and without to see what I mean. I've noticed they're most bothersome in cutscenes during camera movements. Matter of taste again.

Oh! so that's what they are...! I thought that disabling motion debris would disable ship debris from moving (hence disabling awesome fire-trailed debris)...  :nono: :banghead:

I hated those rock thingies...so, Awesome! a way to remove them!

Might as well put it here -- I seem to be missing shadows with the new 3.6.17 build. I've got deferred lighting and glowpoint-lighting, but no shadows. Anyone else having this problem? The new build was supposed to have them, right? Not getting any lighting from projectiles/lasers either.

Is your ingame lighting setting (the one from the F2 menu) cranked all the way up ?

In the new builds, shadows have been disabled by default. To enable them, add "-shadow_quality 1" (You can also use shadow_quality 2, but this is only recommended for people with really fast GPUs) to the custom flags in the Launcher.

Whats the difference between -shadow_quality 1 and -shadow_quality 2? More blocky shadows? or lower viewdistance wherein shadows are displayed?

Lower shadow resolutions. Quality 1 uses 2 1024x1024 maps (I think?), Quality 2 uses 2 4096x4096 maps.

IIRC 4K shadow resolutions should not make that much of a difference compared to 1024, unless viewed on very high resolutions?

Given the fact that our scenes are very very large when compared to the average FPS (in terms of the distance between individual objects), the resolution of the shadow maps can have a very definitive impact on the image quality. If you wish to test this, make a simple mission with a player ship, a large capital ship, and a sun. Position yourself so that your shadow is cast on the ship. Then compare the resulting images with shadow quality set to 1 and 2.

Hey quick hijack so i dont have to make a new thread with my newb question:

Haven't played freespace2 and all the custom stuff in a while, just did a fresh install and was wondering where can I get the mediavps and also any other custom things I should do to improve graphics/game.

Thanks guys

mediavps_3612 are here... (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70736.0).  Not sure about other custom settings, General Battuta posted his visual settings in one of the recent BP threads, I forget which one (... search will be your friend ;))

-bloom_intensity 25 -ambient_factor 100 -no_emissive_light -ogl_spec 30 -spec_exp 5.5 -spec_point 0.3 -spec_static 0.4 -spec_tube 0.2

Battuta's custom flags are here, and work pretty great for me. Any chance to get suggested custom flags posted in the release thread, or somewhere else?

Seconded...especially for campaigns like BP:WiH, where the lighting settings used for other mods/FS2 don't seem quite appropriate(?)
