Hey guys, just thought I'd destroy the most beloved Shivan model in FreeSpace fandom.

(Yes, I know there's no turrets yet. The head armor side plates may under some changes still. Smoothing on the rear engine stuff needs to be tweaked a bit.)

I used to think that the Mephisto was the ugliest model in Freespace after the Boadicea. Now it is looking great! :)

Could we get some more artistic license on the winglets?.
I know the retail model is just like that and the textures sugest what you have already built onto the model but it just looks... bland on that part.
Aside from that awesome work, I really love what you did on the front part :yes:

Oh wow. I honestly didn't even recognize some of the details you expanded on from the retail texture, because I don't think I've ever paid enough attention to it to see them. I'll have to actually stop and look at this one. :p

I really love what you've done with this. It looks fantastic. The fins on the head are a great extrapolation and I really like how the engine structure connects to the main body.
I'm not sure what else could be added that couldn't be done on the textures, however you might consider some sort of greebling detail on the top and/or inside of the thruster area. Those spots seem slightly plain to the rest, but that's just a nitpick.
Rodo mentioned the winglets. Perhaps they could use some more, but normal maps could do a lot with those spaces too.

looks good for the most part, though I think the armor plates on the sides of the head should not have a curvy edge, and should not lead into each other so smoothly (it should look more like a saw blade). aside from that the only things I think could make this better would be it there was some more detail on the body, and if those vents on the neck ended in a point rather than a flat end. and as a final nitpick, I don't quite like the way the frill on the top of the head is, I think that could be done better as a little antenna spike thingy.

At least in retail I never saw the Mephisto carrying more than one container at a time. Of course it is possible now to have multiple docked ships, but in general I don't think it should matter too much, considering the fact that polygons are not the major resource hog (if I recall correctly - don't textures consume more resources?) and it'll be UV mapped rather than tiled.

I doubt the "winglets" are supposed to have any detail or flash on them; they're just rails to hold cargo containers. How much detail does a mounting rail need?

I swore the original Mephisto was UVmapped anyway.
And Yes, it never carries more than one, but all four are equivalent. In retail, you could put your one cargo container onto any of the four arms.

It is perfectly capable of carrying four at once in SCP though.

Dragon, stop bumping old threads asking for progress. You know how this works. If there was progress, you would have seen it.

I'm just wondering, that's all. Notice I'm not asking for progress. Axem is obviously around, so I wanted to know if he still has the model. I've been gone for some time, so if he said, at some point, that he lost his WiPs for some reason, then I'd have missed it.
Also, with so many things on his head, it's not an unreasonable idea that he just put the model off for a while and forgot about it. Perhaps now it's a good time to dust off that beauty.

The model is in the hands of the FSU guys right now. If anyone wants to UVmap and texture it, let me or someone like mjn know and we can most certainly give you the files!
And I see for some reason I deleted the pics, which is an utter shame. I updated the main post with a p3d.

That's amazing. :) Maybe we'll see that one finished yet. Oh, and could you add a p3d with a container, too? I really hope someone steps up and textures it. I couldn't do it justice, unfortunately.

How I wish this made it into the current Mediavps... Well, let's just hope someone finishes it. Maybe, just maybe, the 2015 Mediavps will contain a full HTL shipset.
