Yup, I see what you mean, but I didn't have full control on the Normal Map since I only used CrazyBump and it doesn't give me a good overview. And I dunno how to make a good one without to have an ugly one. When you zoom in the ship, the normal map looks pretty crap.

DaBrain: Me wants more! ;)

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Okay... I have a few questions now:
1. Are there already normal maps available for download?
2. Is normal mapping already in CVS? And if yes: In HEAD or somewhere else?
3. If normal mapping is NOT in CVS and there are NO normal maps available for download: How long would I have to wait till I can try it out? ;)

Not yet.  DaBrain is the only one with an ETA for that.

Nope, it's only in the Xt builds so far.  The plan is to commit to the stable branch at some point this weekend, but HEAD still isn't going to get it until next month probably.

A public, stable test build will be released tomorrow, along with a small normal map pack.  Then everyone can test it out and any last bugs can be fixed.

This new stuff does require GLSL support, which means that you will need a good enough video card and new enough drivers.  We don't yet have any sort of minimum requirements on the hardware side, but quite a few different cards were tested, so I think that it will all work fine for most people.  But I do anticipate that things aren't going to work very well for a not-small minority.

Here is another example, one of my favorites...

The first shot is of the regular old rendering, that we are all used to by now.
The second shot is of the new shader style rendering, with the new lighting model.
The third shot is with normal maps enabled.

Will a linux bin (or source) also be released? That would be great!

We all want more comparison shots (well, actually, any new shots showing off these new features would be cool). ;)

Source, yes.  Bin, maybe.  Just depends on how much time I've got (which isn't a lot).

I love them too. ;)

Tried to get as close to retail as possible with an older SCP build and everything turned off. And then with the most recent build and everything turned on.

About the normal maps: I'd like to release them with the MediaVPs, which are almost complete (actually I didn't fix some things and started making normal maps... ;) ) I could also rename them and release a normal map pack now though, if taylor wants me to, to get this build tested.

ETA... Depends on how much time I have next week... hopefully on sunday or the following monday. I'll ask a few people for help and advice with a few problems.

Why not just run Retail?  It's included with Turey's...

Some shots from the first mission of the FS2 campaign... I always seem to go there when I'm trying new stuff.

The Noob, Alpha One, in first combat sortie.

The cavalry arrives... just as you already got rid of the bad guys.

A few angles... the shallow angles really make the normal maps stand out.

Imma chargin mah lazor...

Shoop da whoop!

...ehm. ;7

The normal/height map stuff is really gonna be an important and beloved feature. And that might be the understatement of the decade... but oh well. :p

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Well here are my mod cmdline options...

Code: [Select]
-mod FS2_Lightspeed,STARFIELD_REPLACEMENT,normalmaps,mediavp368zeta,DDS_beamglows,replace_retail_stars,a_subspace

- FS2_Lightspeed = enables Lightspeed's nebulae for FS2 campaign
- STARFIELD_REPLACEMENT = my own personal starfield skybox texture, which complements the nebulae rather nicely
- normalmaps = the new normal map pack
- mediavp368zeta = self-explanatory, includes AdvEffects.
- DDS_beamglows = self-explanatory
- replace_retail_stars = replaces retail stars with cooler images
- a_subspace = Axem's subspace vortices

The only problem with the starfield I made is with current sun glare, which increases the brightness of the whole screen, which means that all the dim stars are enhanced which can look a bit ridiculous. But in normal conditions it looks marvellous on my PC. Then again, my monitor is calibrated correctly, the default colour calibration would show way way too many of the stars, so I'm not certain how the background looks on your end...
