What I like about that GIF is how smooth it is. The smoothest GIF I've ever seen is that of a galloping horse, and the beam display GIF on Wikipedia is nowhere as smooth as this one.

The Ares on the shield display is more dull than that, and the ship icon itself is pushed up more, it's a Herc II.

Any tips for for taking screen shots, namely removing the HUD and what not. I have a fairly beefy PC and run @ 2560x1600 so I thought I may as well take some nice screens.

Also, tips for getting the game to look nice would be handy. I found a thread or two with some suggested settings but they're a little dark for my liking.

From about 1:20 he's chasing him and then I made the gif around the 1:23-1:33 mark. It was set to use 10 fps to create the gif, thus it was sped up. I tried adding more frames, but it made the gif too large filesize wise and also caused it to appear choppy. I preferred it being smoother, even though it's too fast.

Yeah I grabbed the whole shebang last year and got the latest 3.6.10 MediaVPs a few months back, as well as the new RC2 EXE and 5.5d launcher recently. One thing I can't work out though, I seem to have the old shockwaves for when bombs go off, or capital ships explode. Not sure why but they look really out of place when I have all these high-poly, high-res ships with great lighting, and then "shocking" shockwaves =\
