GTA V (nearly) more expensive than blockbusters
http://www.businessinsider.com/gta-v-cost-more-than-nearly-every-hollywood-blockbuster-2013-9

Quote
GTA V comes to stores September 17, and when it does it won't only be one of the most expensive games ever made, but also one of the costliest pieces of entertainment to have hit shelves.

At $266 million, the fifth installment of the Rockstar game will have surpassed the estimated production budget (without marketing) for every Hollywood blockbuster adjusted for inflation except "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" which cost an estimated $300 million.

That is an absurd budget total.

Re: GTA V (nearly) more expensive than blockbusters
Not really, if you're comparing it to a summer blockbuster movie. In some ways, a game like GTA V, or Skyrim, or any of these massive open world games is the equivalent of an animated movie dozens and dozens and dozens of hours long. Measured as cost per minute of screentime, games are still way way cheaper than movies. It is interesting though to see the same fractionation occurring in games that occurred in movies - the big studio system and the plucky little indie. :D

I bet half of it is marketing, and the rest is license fees for radio musics.

I don't bet on more than 40 mil actually spend on game development.

I wonder if they've got a proper breakdown on where the money was distributed

Either way, given how sales were for GTA IV, I'm not surprised they'd have such a high budget.
I would also not be surprised if they make double

I would also not be surprised to see myself obtaining it on release

Saint's Row covers all my driving fun needs.

Which are very small compared to my spaceship needs.

Yeah, they've been running ads during NFL (American Football) games which is incredibly expensive. I was shocked watching season opener yesterday at how truly awful the in-game visuals look when you see them immediately following a live action commercial.

Re: GTA V (nearly) more expensive than blockbusters
Maybe that's a compliment in a way. A lot of games you wouldn't even be drawing comparisons to live action at all.

I saw a long ad here in the UK on the game. Longer than most ads it was.

I wasn't very interested in GTA V until I saw the leaked map. I'm a sucker for proper open worlds, and Saints Row 4 seems to be moving away from that direction, so...
The good Christian should beware of mathematicians, and all those who make empty prophecies. The danger already exists that the mathematicians have made a covenant with the devil to darken the spirit and to confine man in the bonds of Hell.
