What have you been doing? From what I've understood, you've been playing FreeSpace for quite some time. Have you installed new drivers, for example?

Before demanding any updates, did you even try the -no_glsl flag solution? If not, here's what to do:

-Open the Launcher
-open the Features tab
-add -no_glsl to the Custom flags field

Then try to run the game.

Kind'o hard for people to make updates if a) you're the only one with this particular problem and b)we still don't know what the problem actually is.

One possible reason for that problem is, that your desktop color depth isn't 32-bit.

Try running the game in 32-Bit and set your desktop color depth to 32-Bit too. That might fix the problem.


If it does not help post a complete list of the hardware in your PC (CPU, GFX Card, RAM) and also the OS you are using (maybe Vista64?).

Well... I don't really care what it had worked with before.

I need to know what kind of OS you are using right now. So are you using Vista64?

What is the exact name of the EXE you are using and which MediaVP files did you download. (All of the 3.6.10Beta files?)
Also I hope you are using the Launcher. Which version of the Launcher do you use?


Before anything can be done, we have to figure out the problem. And we need more informations from you to figure out the problem.

One useful info would be fs2_open.log file.

To generate one do following... Start launcher, select debug version of the build with which you encounter problems (debug build is the build marked with additional 'debug', 'd', 'db' or something similar). Start the game (or try to start the game). Quit the game after you get to main hall. Go to <your FreeSpace directory>/data and find the 'fs2_open.log' file. Copy its contents here - preferably using 'code' tags, the '#' thing when you are posting a reply.

There are an awful lot of files in C:\games\freespace2 that should be in their own subfolders, for starters. For example, blueplanet1.vp and 1bppatch.vp should be in C:\games\freespace2\blueplanet.

Clearly the problem you have has nothing to do with mediavps and their version as seen in above you do not even have any mediavp files in use. Yet still the game crashes during graphics init. It seems like something goes very badly wrong with OpenGL graphics. If you claim having the latest drivers then i have nothing apart from cleaning the graphics driver installation and then reinstalling the latest reliable drivers.

EDIT... One thing before that though... Make sure your desktop set to 32bit.

Take all *.VP files and move them out of the Freespace 2 directory.
Only these files have to stay in your Freespace 2 directory:
root_fs2.vp
smarty_fs2.vp
sparky_fs2.vp
sparky_hi_fs2.vp
stu_fs2.vp
tango1_fs2.vp
tango2_fs2.vp
tango3_fs2.vp
warble_fs2.vp

Reame your /data/ folder to /data_old/


Do not use TVWP as mod an do not try to run FS2 in window.

If it still doesn't start, post the debug info again.


And stop asking for an update! A random update won't help you.

Okay that's the last time you post that without comment. For a start no we don't have to update. You're not paying us. We don't owe you anything.

Secondly you haven't established to my satisfaction that this isn't a problem at your end rather than with the FS2_Open code. If you can provide me an explanation of what is actually wrong with the code itself stating why it's crashing for you, then you say with certainty that it's FS2_Open that's the problem and not your machine and that the code needs to be updated.

Thirdly you've been told to clean up your main folder and haven't done so. I doubt it's the cause of your problems but it isn't helping and should be taken care of.

If you mean this info.. it is because it seems rather likely that the issue is related to your graphics card drivers as the debug spew seemingly ends after Initializing WGL... but before the OpenGL init has been completed.

Second, woutersmits, you're going to have to meet us halfway if you want any help.  There are dozens of people on this board willing to help you, but they're not going to get anywhere without your cooperation.  And they're doing you a favor; you're not doing them a favor.

The fact that you reported karajorma's post (without any explanation I might add) signifies that you simply don't get it.  Therefore, I'm going to ban you for one day so you get the point.  After you get back, you'll need to cooperate if you want any help.

Well, repeatedly demanding for an update, even though the problem lies in his computer, was somewhat rude, so I think that supports the temporary ban. But I was also thinking that we should try to find out in which country does he live. That way it might be possible to find someone who speaks his native language and have them sort out his problems once and for all.
