Title: Starship Troopers FPS
Post by: Aardwolf on February 14, 2010, 10:01:07 pm
I don't get what's so bad about it. It seems like a fun game to me.

(Except for the handful of graphical glitches I've got on my new compy, but ignoring that...)

Anyone else played it? Liked it? Disliked it? Thoughts?

Yeah, a few years ago.  I always wanted to get it, but we didn't have a good enough computer to run it, and when we finally got a good enough computer, it wasn't on the shelves anymore :sigh:

My interest in it was renewed by watching a playthrough on YouTube by a guy named "CorvusMoore"... I tried to install it on my previous laptop, but it crapped out right after the splash screen.

On my new laptop it works, but I had to manually disable the "distort" effect in some config file somewhere, lest it make my screen all a solid color whenever a certain effect is to be displayed... But that renders one type of enemy nearly invisible :( And it still does the solid-color thing whenever the damage effect is displaying.

But when it's not insanely frustrating it's fun, IMO.

Swarm engine is fun. Infinite blaster is fun. Nukes are fun.

The general is annoying. The title of marauder with no 'on the bounce' powered armour is annoying.

The title screen looping is annoying.

The intro levels are cool.

I tried out the multiplayer modes (created a server, but with no other players, of course)... you're a lot faster and a better jumper in multiplayer. And the coop modes are basically impossible without 2+ people.

I was an alright game when it worked, but shipping a game that dosn't work out of the box on most peoples systems, ... sorry... anyones system and then not patching those issues is just bad.

It's boring and repetetive.

It's a good game for the first playthrough. It's more of a 'borrow from a friend' game. Other than that the weapons are cool, the nuke is all like "whoosh!.....BOOM!"

The Multi Rocket Launcher (M.R.L.) is fun.

My memory may be failing me with regard to this subject. . .

But was there a spanish one every ten or so grenades?

Played the demo way back when but never really liked it. Never played the full game.

It was German, not Spanish. And oddly enough, if you let it 'cook' until it automatically shuts down, you won't necessarily get another German one as you go through your grenades. It just selects German or English randomly when you press the grenade key.

I used to think it was Spanish too, actually, until I cracked open the data files and listened to it (i.e. without having to keep throwing grenades until I got lucky!)

IT WAS GERMAN?  IT SWITCHED LANGUAGES?

Alright, I played the German version (which was poorly (= cheap studio) translated). No grenade accent switching there, just
HELLO! FÜNF (five), VIER (four), DREI, ZWEI, EINS...

The German 'nade is all like "Hallo! Vier... Drei... Zwei... Eins... (something that sounds like "shasse") *weird sound effect* (something that sounds like "rot apriegelung")". And it's a bit louder than the English one.

It's also infrequent as hell, so it's possible you just never happened to get it. I wonder if the German version of the 'oddball' grenade speaks English  :ick:
