While I didn't get to plan on seeing the Warner Brothers film Ready Player One as the release date comes, I would like to ramp up to the more major spoilers for the film. However, as a precaution, that still means I'll be starting with minor spoilers.

Ready Player One was reviewed 6/10, as an unabashed homage to geek culture and 80s nostalgia smorgasboard. You may have not noticed here that Ready Player One would be dripping with references from Star Wars, and perhaps FreeSpace?

Like Terran, Vasudan and Shivan craft flying across players in the OASIS system and during the final battle, perhaps.

That's conjecture. You may discuss, but be careful.

There is no chance whatsoever for a FreeSpace reference in RPO.

There is no chance whatsoever for a FreeSpace reference in RPO.

That would require the author having taste :P

Either way, it's enjoyable as it is a pop-culture mashup. I hope future ones will involve FreeSpace, I guess.

I'm all "I think I'll avoid this thread for spoilers" but I remembered I've read the book so hi.

Wouldn't want to spoil this amazingly interesting and original work of fiction.

I do not know the book. Actually this movie looks interesting and we are still thinking about to watch it :).

If i would know the book, it is clear, that it can only dissappoint, because every reader have different ideas what someone should prioritize to show in a movie.

Nevertheless... i would love to see a Saga of the Seven Suns movie or even a series
Especially the space battles would have much in common with Freespace :D

I know the book, and lemme tell you, any departure from that thing would make the film immeasurably better.

Just cutting out the protagonist's internal monologue would go a long way to elevate the text from "oh my ****ing god who wrote this ****" to "eh, a bit boring and far too pandering to an audience that really does not need pandering"

As for the actual film: I'm hearing that it's actually watchable? But I'm definitely going to wait until it's on Prime or Netflix to check it out; there's no way in hell I'm going to be paying actual money specifically for it.

Me too. It's a story of some player participates into what looks like a virtual reality system, and later involves in a fight against the corrupt businessman who's CEO of the service provider of some kind.

I read 2 paragraphs of it. I don't know the actual page it was on and I don't care.

From everything I've gathered in addition to the two paragraphs I've read, it's basically the anti Snowcrash wearing a veneer of pop culture and in a really ****ty cosplay of Snowcrash.

As you know Ready Player One is coming to theaters very soon, I suggest you post here and proceed with caution not to reveal spoilers.

Spoiler:
MC wins by being the best at 80s

EDIT: I just realized that it's releasing today, on Easter weekend. It's a movie about finding Easter eggs.

I saw the movie. Pretty fun. Middle was pretty weak but picked up at the end. Seemed to also throw in an internet reference to a little irish girl.

Worst thing about the movie, way too much Overwatch. At least 4 Tracer camoes. GTFO.

You can tell who they paid the most money to.

Well I saw Halo 2-3 times as well.  I would think the gaming companies would be paying them to advertise in the game, not the other way around, because that is basically product placement much like a coke can in another movie.  Particularly when there's a scene which specifically displays what Tracer is associated with.
