HLP IRC-channel was created nearly three years ago and it is still alive and kicking. Those who have been frequent visitors to the channel certainly would like to see new people joining them. If you like real-time discussion with the people you've got to know in the forums, now is your chance.
If you've been unable to join our IRC-channel due to various technical issues, you can now thanks to services such as Mibbit (http://www.mibbit.com/). No more need to install an IRC-client, no more need to meddle with odd settings and no more need to worry about firewalls and other networking issues.
In fact, click this link (http://widget.mibbit.com/?settings=b73fe961ed217d9a3cbd9637dc7ba9bf&server=irc.esper.net&channel=%23hard-light&noServerTab=false) and select yourself a nick and you're good to go. The link automatically connects you to the correct IRC-server and channel, all you need to do is a web-browser. Which you do if you're reading this. If you prefer a local client software instead, feel free to pick one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat#Clients). And if you're curious what exactly is IRC about, read more here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat).
If you want to join multiple channels at once, such as #hard-light, #scp (The FreeSpace Source Code Project) and #scp-fsu (The FreeSpace Upgrade Project), you can use this link (http://widget.mibbit.com/?settings=b73fe961ed217d9a3cbd9637dc7ba9bf&server=irc.esper.net&channel=%23hard-light,%23scp,%23scp-fsu&noServerTab=false) or modify it for your needs.
Mibbit fully supports most standard IRC commands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irc_commands). Most common being how to join additional channels after you have connected to server, this can be done via typing /j #channelname or /join #channelname in chat input field.
(Some advertising some odd-year doesn't hurt, eh... :p)
And special thanks to chief1983 and Axem for keeping some resemblance of order in the channel when it was needed in stead of the admins.

Haha I just did this 2 days ago for FotG. Also, Axem has also been a big help in the order-keeping department.

Just an FYI to some would be chatters. IRC can be 90% lurking, 9% spam, 0.9% monologues and 0.1% EPIC AWESOME CONVERSATION.
So please stay awhile instead of joining, seeing no activity for 5 minutes, then leaving. It's totally worth it to stick around.

just to say you can use opera browser for the irc and that way you can be in irc and in hlp at the same time ................(tile mode)

HLP Mibbit widget (http://widget.mibbit.com/?settings=b73fe961ed217d9a3cbd9637dc7ba9bf&server=irc.esper.net&channel=%23hard-light&noServerTab=false) should now have more HLPish colors than before. So if colors put you off before, try our Mibbit widget again. Perhaps you'll like it better now. Aside from colors, the widget has seen some other look customizations since a month ago.
Have fun chatting with your fellow forumites. :)
Edit: Almost forgot to remind you, Mibbit is useful for bypassing firewalls that would otherwise block ports used by irc. But don't use it recklessly at work if it gets you into trouble. ;)

You can get on IRC just by clicking on the Mibbit link - you don't have to install anything.

Browser-based, that is. Tried it a couple of times. But I still prefer actual clients.

It's designed as an easy way in for a new visitor, someone just looking for some quick help, etc. It's not really intended to be a permanent solution like a standalone IRC client. But it definitely makes the channel more accessible.

I've been using Mibbit exclusively for almost two months and I haven't had problems with it. The only things I miss are GUI of channel modes, topic and bans, but those are available through text commands anyway. For those who are not ops on channel, I don't see Mibbit really lacking in features except for personal customization. To me it is good enough as "permanent solution". :) And it allows me to bypass firewall at work which blocks irc ports. :p

I can't get Mibbit working tonight. It won't load the nick-select screen.

Get ChatZilla if you're using Firefox. It's not very pretty, but it's very functional.

opera has an irc client built in , which is ok

Irssi is excellent. So is Orion (http://tellini.info/software/orion/), though it lacks UTF-8 support. mIRC is decent, though it cries for a registration after 30 days.

Can you access http://www.mibbit.com/chat/ ?
If yes, then select server and channel and you can get on irc.
If you can't access it, chances are it has been blocked. I assume you're trying to access from school or work?

I have added instructions to first post in this topic how to use HLP Mibbit widget to connect to multiple channels at once and how to join additional channels after you have already connected to server. SCP and FSU channels serve as fine examples of additional channels. ;) All Mibbit widget links now also use secure https instead of http.

If only IRC wasn't such a posterior pain on Android. Most of the time (unless I'm gaming) I'm on my phone or occasionally tablet these days. It's not an app issue either, there are good android IRC apps, it's a "trying to effectively type in textual commands on a touchscreen is a modern form of torture" issue.

No, it works fine ... it's just hard to type in commands (or find a tiny button for them) on my aging Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini.
